Fabulous lidded box Jim, the figure is really amazing. I agree with the lid knob, keep it simple and plain. 👍 I use cellulose sanding sealer which I get prethinned from Hampshire Sheen. If I get anybody else's I thin by up to 40% with a thinner. Regards the Yorkshire grit, I apply it more liberally and work it in slow, about 300rpm until the gritiness is gone. Then take the speed up to 550 rpm for a minute or two, then start to take it off with clean cloth/kitchen towel at 800 rpm until I can't see any on the towel. Disclaimer, this is just how I do it. 😀

Stunning bowl, Jim. I’d have made a smaller finial but my boss (wife) happened to see the vid and told me I was simply wrong and you were right... the colour is beautiful so the sanding sealer does it for me here. So that is the definitive judgment - a gorgeous bowl with a superbly tasteful finial. Thanks! Hugh

Tim, I'm watching your video on Maple crotch with maple burl and silver black tinted resin on TV RU-vid. You had a hell of a time getting it out of the bucket! Next time find the center on the bottom of the bucket and drill a hole. It will let the air in and release it in a tap or two. Just tuck tape the hole for the next pour! I'm not at turner yet. Bought a new 16X46 lathe floor model and setting it up for a winter of learning and turning! I'm a 100 percent disabled Vietnam veteran and sit too much. I figure it's time to start standing and not so much sitting. I've been building and flying RC models for over 60 years and sit when I'm doing that, so it's time to get up and try to keep from loosing my legs. My turning shop name will be "Birdcage productions". I thought it was appropriate because my nickname is Bigbird or just bird. Also quite appreciate because I love anything that flies. Any suggestions on how to get sponsors would be much appreciated. Thank you my American brother. I really love your work. I'm a big fan of natural edge bowls and resin turnings. Phil Anderson and The Papa 1947 are two of my other favorites. Take care and let's keep in touch. Bob Bray aka 'bird'

@bobbray9919

@@SpragueWoodturning I was thinking about it. Don't really know much on how to. Any help will be appreciated. I've been modeling RC planes for over 60 years and have really burned out. I'm not done by any means, I am pationately in love with aviation. I have been a Craftsman for a long long time! I'm not sure how long I can do turning as I'm loosing my leg strength. I'm a 100 percent disabled Vietnam veteran from agent orange. I'll be 70 next month and feel 85! I don't think I want to make a business turning but I hope I can enjoy a long time doing it. Please, keep in touch with me. I enjoy the videos you do. I also like Phil Anderson and his natural edge bowls. I'm also interested in resin. I've been buying a lot of stuff. I'm trying to get my garage set up as a wood shop. Supposed to be getting a double door fridge to make a kiln and another one for resins and glues so they won't freeze. I'm a backyard engineer. I have 16 degrees, signed them all myself!🤣 Let's keep this going please. Many thanks Jim. Sorry I got your name wrong first time. Bob Bray 802-279-5248 I'm in Vermont.

Gorgeous wood! The figure is fantastic! I have watched a ton of turners use the sealer and none of them have said they cut it at all. Don't forget you need to sand the surface after you apply it. The friction pastes are great.

Since this video was shot I’ve found out most do cut it 50/50.

Wow, that is so gorgeous! The poplar has such incredible grain and coloring! I've used Yorkshire Grit and Ack's Sanding Paste for several years now and I just love it!

Beautiful 🥰 I can see how inlay lead to resin casting. I prefer lining the lid to the bowl but this piece was darling 💖

Jim, it’s beautiful in the simplicity of its lines coupled with that gorgeous grain! I’ve never seen Poplar with grain patterns that pronounced before, nor had I ever heard of a Poplar growing that large! Sounds like it was a singularly Blessed tree! Too bad it had to be taken down. As usual, I always learn something from your videos, making the time invested to be a sound choice! Keep on turnin’!

Cottonwood poplars here can get quite massive, with really nice crotch grain as well. If it’s got big limbs on it, don’t pass it up, thanks.

Great project Jim. Those cans are a pain to pour out of. Have u ever thought of using Stop Loss bags? Real easy to work out of with an added benefit of keeping your finish from skiming over.

I agree about that poplar ... it is so, so beautiful Jim. I'd love to have a big hunk ! Good to see you're making something more my size and abilities, and that you're moving into new things. Mixing it up will only enhance your skills, etc. eh? Stay safe. -Mike😷⏳💉

Thanks! It certainly was a special tree. I typically don’t work with poplar but if I see a large one with large limbs on it and it’s coming down, it’s mine, lol.
