Woodturning - Tobacco Pipe (How to make a Tobacco Pipe - Detailed Explanation)

Making my own Tobacco Pipes is what first really started me down the path of woodturning. I wanted a way to achieve the precise drilling required to create a perfect "draw". And so I bought my first lathe! Well actually my Dad bought me the lathe for my Christmas and Birthday.....Thanks Dad! Since the Briar wood was so expensive, I decided to try some local hardwoods; but the wood just kept cracking on me! So I began to search youtube for ways to dry wood without cracking. This led me to Sam Angelo' channel ( / @wyomingwoodturner ) where I found videos on drying wood. But he also had all these warped wooden bowls he showed he was drying. What the heck is this guy doing with these bowls? What's this all about? So I watched how he turned solid pieces of wet wood into bowls and other forms and I decided to give it a try. This was just over 4 years ago. And so here we are!

A lovely pipe. I don't actually smoke but I'm English so a pipe is necessary for communication. As all Englishmen know, the only acceptable method of greeting an acquaintance in a public space is to hold one's pipe aloft and call out "Aaraah Yaheaargh!" or some other incoherent noise that sounds like a cross between gargling and groaning. It is also a vital implement for giving directions within one's locality. To point with anything other than a pipe is socially unforgivable and likely to bring shame upon one's family. After such a faux pas, there is nothing left but to do the honourable thing and spend an entire year being seen outside without a hat.

I make and sell pipes as a hobby, and the demand is really picking up. I was drawn to your video, as there is always something to be learned, and your video didn't disappoint. The pipe is really nice, but the stem is where I really paid attention. Acrylic stems are a tricky thing, and you did a beautiful job and I learned quite a bit. Appreciate your experience and skill, and your willingness to share with others. You make a beautiful product. Be well. Jim

Beautiful pipe! Thank you for the detailed play by play on the making of the stem. Not a lot of pipe tutorials show so much of that part.

I never considered a pipe could be art (as I don't smoke I really don't consider pipes at all) but brother, this is absolutely a work of art. I like the stem the way it is - very unique. This was just great to watch and I am looking forward to seeing you other videos.

I’ve always wanted to make a pipe and wondered if I could use my lathe to make one. I’ll admit that I’m a bit nervous but I can say in all honestly, I’ve learned more from my mistakes than my successes. Wish me luck. Excellent content here on your channel.

The last few weeks I'm looking to video's of making pipes. I happens to be a pipe-smoker, so that the reason of my interests. You are the first who don't color the pipe, and I like that, I do like that a lot! Besides that, the models you show on your side are very beautiful. This video is very useful, you explain a lot and that way some thing became clear to me, thank you for that.

Wow, awesome video. I have been an occasional pipe smoker for about 44 years. I have always greatly appreciated the workmanship of a good pipe and the one in this video is Gorgeous. I have one pipe that is very similar that I have had for about 42 years. I am an old carpenter and cabinet maker and was always curious about how a pipe was made. A Lathe is one of the few tools I have never touched, but thats gonna change. I'm retired from the fire service so smoke is in my blood. Great, great video.
