Woolworth's Diner: The last of its kind

It's the last of it's kind.
The only Woolworth Luncheonette counter left in America and it's right here in our community.
"We want the whole time that they're here to be an experience. Not just a burger or not just a soda pop, but an experience of maybe the way things use to be," said Jeremy Trammell, co-owner of Woolworth's Diner.
Tucked in the corner of the old F.W. Woolworth five-and-dime sits a 74 foot lunch counter, dishing up American classics much like it did in the 1950's.
"It's simple. It's good. It's fresh. That's what people love about it," said Joseph Trammell, co-owner of Woolworth's Diner.
"We take a lot of pride in being fresh so we make our own products here. We make our own pies, cakes, cookies lemonade, potato salad, macaroni salad, barbecue baked beans, everything is made in house," Jeremy Trammell said.
Eight years ago the Trammell brothers signed on to help the retro diner's legacy live on.
Their business plan, to make it feel like home to every customer who stops in.
"That's one of the biggest compliments on our food is when people will refer to it as - this tastes like when I was a kid," Jeremy Trammell said.
But it's about much more than food - it's family.
"There's a real friendliness and people start to learn eachother's names, but they were strangers to each other six months ago. They became friends just eating here at the same place," Trammell said.
"You know when you come here they always make you feel welcome. They make you feel at home," said Silvia Hernandez, a customer.
"If you go back to the way they were doing it in the good 'ol days, they were thinking about somebody not something. They were thinking about somebody," Trammell said.
"It reminds me of many fond memories growing up. People need to know what enjoyable places these were," said Marsha McKinney, another customer.
Woolworth's Diner is open seven days a week 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

My great grand mother would take me with her to Woolworth when she was going to buy her fabrics and yarn. She made clothes for people around the neighborhood, and also quilts. She would sit me at the counter and order me a cheeseburger, fries and a coca cola. I could not have been older than 4 years old (making it sometime around 1975-1976), but I remember it like it was yesterday. And I wish I had known about this place back in 2017, my wife and I took a road trip from Las Vegas and we stopped to get gas in Bakersfield. I definitely wont miss going there next time.

I enjoyed many meals at Woolworths. Especially when a was in junior high school. However, I cannot forget that many people before me sacrificed and got food thrown in their face and milk poured on them so I could eventually sit down in peace and have that meal.

The Woolworth that used to be in SC was really bad on racial profiling. I remember when I was a kid back in the 70 s and 80 's my brother and I would get followed by management and staff, get our pictures taken and demand that we would quickly leave. The one in Columbia, SC would refuse to serve blacks. They did leave a historical marker telling that dark American history story

It’s old-school little small business things like this, that really restore my faith in humanity. I pray that we see more of this in life. We desperately need it in this polarized, angry era that we live in. I confess I miss Woolworths, but I realize retail stores come and go. They didn’t have that many of the lunch counters when I was a kid but I remember a couple of them. And we definitely had Woolworths up until the early 90s. Such a bright spot today.

Another place I remember was Nedicks in the Main Street subway terminal in Flushing, Queens, on the concourse above the line 7 terminal. At the end of the subway line in Times Square was another Nedicks and one at Journal Square, Jersey City, N.J. they had the best orange soda I ever tasted. Whether it still exists I do not know.

@@wickedcrypto6004 I will tell you even more than you think. In 1964 we moved from Flushing to Richmond Hill both in the borough of Queens,NYC. We lived at 126th street 40 yards from Jamaica Avenue. On our first night I had a very hard time sleeping due to the subway line that ran above the Avenue to Jamaica. Every 15 minutes a subway train rambled through. I had heard the city never sleeps but never thought it was literally true! Even the buses ran all night at least once evey half hour. And not only that but twice a week after a subway train had passed another train came to a stop where my bedroom was located and waited for the signal to change to green. It was composed of retired World War 1 era subway cars with 2 flat cars that held garbage bins to take the trash fro the trash dumpsters at each subway station. And now for the modern era of 2023. Even Long Island City has changed and now has many skyscrapers. It is the neighborhood on the other side of the Queensborough Bridge in Queens. And Journal Square has a new hotel if I am not mistaken. Do you know what most people did on buses and trains in NYC during the Mad Men era? Answer...reading newspapers and magazines! And I practiced reading by having the midnight edition of the New York Daily News that my late father took home with him when he came from his midnight shift and I read it in the afternoon from school. Those were the days of old NYC in old America during the Mad Men era.

Maybe the last in United States but not the last in America because still there are dozens of Woolworth Luncheonettes open in Mexico. In Mexico they are know as "Café Woolworth" or "Café W".

My last time was at a Woolworth's in Panama city Florida downtown. I smelled in all the dime store smells and the smell of the food. I reveled in it knowing it was not going to last much longer and it didn't. My new husband had cheeseburger and fries and I had a BLT and a root beer. I think it was 1990? I had only been married a few of years. I made a BLT the other day just like that one but my fries are not nearly as good as theirs.

I sure miss the good old days. My parents used to take me to Woolworth in between 57 and 58 Bergenline Ave, West New York, New Jersey. I remember eating breakfast or having a milk shake with a burger there 🤧🥲❤️. It’s a great piece of Americana history and culture that sadly the new generation have no clue.
