Oh my..... you have no idea how you helped me after hours and hours of total frustration. I couldn't find an answer and then you explained it like it was the most simple thing in the world. Thank you so much. You made my day.

@@Formattingformula Absolutely! I cannot believe MS Words would make a simple functionality such as Headers, Lists, Styles so complicated to use. Thank you for saving us :)
In Microsoft Word 2016, at Multilevel List, List in current Document, there`s no option to modify that. It does appear the "Save to Gallery" and "Add Gallery To Quick Access Toolbar". So this doesn`t help.
SkyGuardian, Are you in the original document? If you aren't in the original document, you may not see the Modify option. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and for sending a comment. Michelle Seitz

Hello, I don't know if you still reply to old videos, but my numbering jumps weirdly. From 3 to 3.2, I can't make the 3.1 no matter the formatting. I can make 1.1 and 2.1, but from 3 and so on, they skip the n.1 Idk why. Do you have any idea what's the problem?
Hi @afsaneha.1695! That is great. I am very happy that it helped you. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to send me a comment. Have a great day! Michelle Seitz

@@manpreetkaurjaswal1175 If you cannot send it, try this. Click on a heading line with the style of heading you want to edit. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the arrow next to Multilevel List Word multilevel button down arrow, and then click Define New Multilevel List. You may be able to see your list. Please let me know. Thanks, Michelle Seitz

Hi John, If you did not create the numbered headings, when you hover over a list, it will not have the Modify selection. Try hovering over all the lists to see if you can find a Modify selection. If not, it is most likely, because you did not create it. If you would like me to look at your document, I would like to help. Email me at support @formattingformula.com. Thanks for watching! With every document I make, word seems to screw up the numbering. It takes me hours of extra work to get this fixed every time. Can I send Bill Gates a bill for all these extra hours?
Richard, I feel your pain. That is why I created the Word videos. The numbering in Word 2003 was much easier than it is now. I don't know why they changed it. Is there something I can help you with? I will be most happy to help! If you have any particular issues, please send me the document and I will walk through the issues and give you some advice. michelles@formattingformula.com. @@Formattingformula Hi. Thanks for your offer. At the moment I am ok. I just helped my son who had issues with headers and numberings. At a certain moment every header-2 started again with a .1 and I had to change them manually. Very frustrating. I'll keep an eye on your channel. Thanks.
@@Richard-bq3ni I really can help with that so it doesn't happen. I am here if you want to take me up on my offer. I have formatted literally thousands and thousands of documents and know what you are going through. Hang in there! You know where to find me! :) Michelle

I was struggling to solve numbering in word styles which were corrupt. After seeing your video, solved issue within few seconds. It was with multi level numbering :) Thank you so much.
Totally makes sense, but my problem still exists. I have chapter 1 with sub headings 1.1 - 1.6, then chapter 2 and heading 2 starts with 1.7 underneath 2. I have selected "Restart list after - Level 1" but it doesn't work. It seems like the headings on level 1 are tracked in a different list. Heading 3 works fine. What can I do?
@@shortti_ Hi, I was able to help Jurgen with his issue. It had to do with the Styles. You need to make the styles consistent and make sure that the Heading numbering is linked to each level (Level 1 to Heading 1, Level 2 to Heading 2, etc.) If you would like me to take a look at your document, send me an email at support@formattingformula.com. I will be happy to troubleshoot. Michelle Seitz
Hi, my issue was that I was using custom styles. Word requires to use the built-in templates called "Heading 1" etc in order to count correctly across headings, figure numbers, table numbers, etc. Once I figured this out thanks to Michelle, it was easy: pointed the cursor on one of my custom heading 1 formatted headlines and made the REAL heading 1 to match my selection. Same for heading 2-4. Then I needed to mark the full text, press F9 to update all fields (figure numbers etc)
My “Entering formatting for number” field seems like i cannot do anything in it after i choose 1,2,3 in number styles i.e this include also that i cannot place my mouse cursor inside and move cursor to before the first digit. What can i do about it ??
Hi Michelle, I cannot seem to find the "Modify" at List Styles when I right click the list style i want to fix. Can you help me? I have the newest Word with a university license.
Hi @Enginehearth! Did you right click on all of the List Styles? Sometimes it is not the one you think it should be. If you still can't find it, can you send me the document? Support@formattingformula.com. I will be more than happy to help. Michelle Seitz
That is terrific, Rahul Padol! I am very happy that it worked for you. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to let me know. Have a great day! Michelle Seitz
Hi Dominick, If the document is not the original, this can happen. Are you the person who created the document? If not, that could be why you don't see it. Michelle Seitz
thank you for this post. I have followed the steps as shown but the level 4 numbers are not correct - a sub-paragraph of a level 3 number: "4.1.2", which I formatted to show level1.level2.level3.number should show "4.1.2.1" but is showing "4.2.1.1", "4.2.1.2" etc
Hi Even Lambe! Always save your document before trying something different. At this point, I would rework Levels 2, 3 & 4 by opening the New List level that you created and since Level 1 (left field code) is correct, I would delete the 3 codes to the right of the first level and begin Level 2, 3 & 4 again. If you still have the same issue and you would like me to take a look at it, I will be happy to troubleshoot. Just send the document to me at michelles@formattingformula.com. Good luck, Michelle Seitz.

In my case, i can´t change the values order. I follow all the steps you mention, but it still wrong numbering. In my document, i move some part of it using navigation panel, but the numbering preserve all time. Is an extensive document and causes me a big problem ;(
