Words of Knowledge & Words of Wisdom 

Thank you all for tackling giftings that are not easy to nail down scriptually. Having some of these giftings myself, I can say they are hard to describe. And let me add that I appreciate you all and your sense of humor because you are being authentic! It feels as though we are all seeing what Joshua, Michael and Michael are like in their theological conversations as friends. It's one of the reasons this is my favorite theological podcast.

A. Howard Carter (1891-1971) says gift of word of wisdom is defined as a revealing of the the mind and will of God. Carter was one of the founders of the AoG in Britain and later moved to US.

I've always thought that prophecy was more about future events, where a word of knowledge is more about uncovering a truth about the present. Wisdom is how to use knowledge. All can be a spiritual gift.

God has all wisdom n knowledge and He imparts some of His wisdom n knowledge to us is the word of wisdom n knowledge

if we have the words translated correctly, knowledge would be information and wisdom would be the ability to use information.

The three of you seem to be making the same mistake I see often - failing to distinguish between discernment and the gift of discerning of spirits. There is no gift of discernment, it is the fruit of maturity (Heb. 5:13-14). Discerning of spirits may be very useful in discernment. That aside blessed and impressed by what you do.

Prochecy in and of itself, is for edification, exhortation and comfort - 1 Cor 14... there is no revealing of secrets or future telling in this unless it is also accompanied by the word of knowledge (ex: Jesus with the woman at the well - a revelation of a current situation) or a word of wisdom (Agabus revealing a future event to Paul). Once you have this sort of understanding, ifmts easier to separate the 3 gifts and find examples in the word without the confusion. There could potentially even be an instance where all three are used together - A word of knowledge on what is happening now, a word of wisdom on the outcome of that, and a prophecy for edification, exhortation or comfort in dealing with that revelation.

This is the second time I've asked you to consider bringing Dr. Neil T Anderson on the show. He's probably a Continuationist and doesn't know it. Contrasting "The Steps to Freedom" which relies on God to reveal things to people in bondage for the purpose of being freed after confession and repentance bears a strong similarity to a word of knowledge or wisdom. I think it would make for a fascinating hour.

Healing may not be needed for us, but will be needed for those still on the earth. There will be a tree whose lead will bring healing, and death/pain won’t be done away with when Christ returns but when the old earth is destroyed and a new heaven and earth are made.

Luke 11:49 I believe gives us a description of word of wisdom. The wisdom of God is that he would send prophets and apostles and what would happen to them. I actually believe a word of wisdom can be a supernatural solution to a problem, or God‘s plan for the future. I believe it can also include warnings from God concerning the future, etc. So the word of knowledge and word of wisdom tend to work together many times. A lot of Times these manifestation gifts work in pairs.

The gift of wisdom does not always involve a word of wisdom, if James 3:17 is considered.

To some extent, I think none of these distinctions matter -- that the list of gifts is most useful for simply helping display to us the BREADTH of gifts the Spirit can (and does) provide. But as long as we're open to it, the whole spectrum of "overt supernaturalness" is largely irrelevant. If I speak with Spirit-empowered "ordinary wisdom," or if I have a sort of "stepped up" degree of insight that some might speak of as "strong intuition" that's really a kind of divinely-inspired awareness, or if I have a word that's very obviously not of myself at all like what Michael Miller described with the person talking about the job opportunity, does it ultimately matter what we CALL any of those things? Or does it just matter that we trust the Spirit to empower His Church, we aim to do all things in accordance with Scripture, and the Church is edified?

Discernings of spirits can discern good as well as evil spirit and I believe even the human spirit. Not just demons… And actually both words are plural in the Greek… Discerning s of spirits… Translations like Young’s literal, ASV, and the footnotes of NAS bring this out.

So do you guys think the holy spirit is God's literal breath / wind? Seeing that that is the definition of spirit in Hebrew and in Greek.. that may answer the question of discerning or testing the spirits so to speak. So you're testing evil spirits and testing people's doctrine while speaking.

It would help to understand the word of wisdom is not the same wisdom gain from natural understanding or spiritual understanding from God’s word. Paul says about these gifts in chapter 12 that not every person is to operate in them and when you do it edifies the body. Of course that does not mean you cannot personally benefit from them. The word of wisdom is spiritual, that it is revelatory direct from God by inspiration and not from the study and revelation of His word. The latter James tells us that “anyone” can ask in faith, not amiss, and receive wisdom from God. But note Paul says that the word of wisdom is not to be sought and received by everyone, but by those that God chooses for the benefit of the body. The same works for word of knowledge and tongues. I understand you have already rejected that these 9 gifts in chapter 12 are sign gifts or ministry gifts, not sure how you can do that. Paul is not talking about wisdom or healing or tongues in chapter 12 as is mentioned that all believers can receive in other parts of the Bible. In Acts, each time, that is every time, tongues was spoken it was by All, not just those God chose for the benefit of the body! It was as sign given in Acts 2 to unbelievers but a sign of the Believers. In Acts 10 tongues was a sign that revealed the “truth” of the Holy Spirit baptism upon the Gentiles. People like Kenneth Hagin are so much closet to a practical understanding of the gifts in chapter 12, yet you seem to reject it? Not sure why. But from my own study and experience of God’s written word in my life over decades I easily see what I have tried to explain. One last thing: knowledge can come from God supernaturally as you read His word and that is not a “word of knowledge”. A word of knowledge comes directly from God by inspiration or revelatory understanding without any nature or written word in from of us being interpreted. Now all gifts line up with God’s written word in principle or specifically, of course. There must be a distinction made between the purpose and manifestation of the 9 gifts in chapter 12 from similar gifts or concepts with the same wording in other places of the Bible. For instance the result of healing is your healed, but the way it is manifested or the purpose of the manifestation can be different. Anyone reading and believing Jesus in the word of God can receive healing, according to the Bible. But God only gifts to certain people for specific ministry to the body gifts of healings. All who spoke in Tongues in Acts spoke without an interpretation period, and were not out of order and did not have to be done by 2 or 3, and it was always “All” speaking not just “whole God willed for the edification of the body”. This is so simple yet why do you blindly allow your presuppositions keep you from seeing it. It is not a good thing to run to your “favorited” trusted teacher or theologian to find this truth every time in doubt but run to the Bible, fast, pray, study, wait on the Lord and allow Him to show you…and that may lead you to to someone’s teaching. The Holy Spirit of God is not divided on this subject, why are we?

"MisReading scripture with western eyes" made me stop my masters degree at Liberty. The professor was pushing this unbiblical thought. It is pure standpoint epistemology. Please do not promote that book. He promotes teaching his kids Buddhist traditions. Maybe the book you reference is a different book?

In regard to the question about how we know it is not just wisdom obtained over the years, one Corinthians 12 seven describes this as a manifestation of the spirit. In verse eight, it is described as a word of wisdom and a word of knowledge. There is no definite article in front of them, so it is a word. We obtain wisdom and knowledge through the spiritual understanding of the word and application applying its principles, but this is a manifestation of the spirit at a given moment. At least this is my understanding.

A word of knowledge is something specific that you receive for another person. For me it it comes out of my mouth before I have had a chance to analyze. For example. This conversation occurred : He: I met a girl I really like, but something bad happened to her “ Me: “I know, her boyfriend committed suicide in front of her.” He: Yes, how did you know that?” Me: I don’t know It turned out to be a word of warning that we couldn’t have known at the time. It turned out her taunts triggered boyfriend's suicide. Boyfriend 2, and ultimately husband, learned about the taunts and experienced many canny attempts on his life. Only God saved him. Should have prayed over this word to get a fuller picture. The word was given for a reason.

I actually do believe that there is a difference in the gifts between Romans 12 and one Corinthians 12. Also Ephesians 4. I would categorize Romans 12 as motivation yes. One Corinthians 12 I would categorize as manifestation GIFs. Ephesians 4 I would categorize as ministry gifts. Not doctrine or anything held tightly, but that’s where I’m at.

The discussion at 26mins. Happens to me when working with patients. Can't explain it. But it does. That's actually how I realized God was speaking to me.

38:30 is a Great example of multiple gifts working together as the spirit willed in order to help someone. Discerning of spirits of the evil spirit, word of knowledge on symptoms snd the cause of the open door, and prochecy to exhort to change and fix the situation.

Thanks guys as always am blessed by your content, the question of finding proof texts for a word of knowledge in scripture, I don't know if the examples of Jesus are good. This is because Jesus is God and we are not if we say he had a word of knowledge it's because he is omniscient and knows all things so maybe a example of someone who is not Jesus would be better...Thanks, this is Manzi from Uganda.

I was thinking recently about the difference between word of knowledge and prophecy. I think I have the Spiritual gift of knowledge but idk how to go about it ur how to define it. Amd if it's a form of prophesy... any thoughts or book recommendations? Thanks!

I'm still a bit confused on the difference between word of knowledge and prophecy. in speaking of prophecy in 1 Cor 14 Paul states "the secrets of their hearts are disclosed". Now that sounds a lot like what is labeled as "word of knowledge" Even in John 4 Jesus' interaction with the woman at the well He stated that she was married 5 times and the one she is with now is not her husband. That sounds like "a word of knowledge" but the woman's response was "I perceive that you are a prophet". Perhaps I need further clarification on this

I thought the episode was helpful. However the thing that jumped out for me was that there has been communication with Chris. I have been feeling pretty burdened by the situation and am praying for an outcome that brings glory to God. I don’t know James White but have heard his named dropped a lot lately.
