Interpretation of Tongues Explained! 

Before someone recognized the language, did you think you were just speaking gibberish/heavenly language? I don't say that in disdain, but I ask because I know some people struggle and believe their tongues is not real until something like that happens.

That would indeed seem like a word from the Lord. Did your brother have an intentional message known to him? (as in Acts 2, where they knew what they were saying and praising, but we're speaking in tongues unknown to them, while heard by others in their own languages).

1 Corinthians 14:26-27. This sounds like a Biblically accurate form of speaking in tongues. Very cool to see in modern society if it really happened.

Well I think it actually did and I’m sure he can verify it. This isn’t an isolated case either since God is sovereignly doing as He pleases through His vessels all the time.

It’s very similar is my experience as well. Most often it’s a back and forth between a couple of people where it’s almost a prophecy or encouragement/instruction from the Lord about something.

The context of the verse you are referring to does not validate unintelligible tongues, in fact, a couple verses later, Paul compares to speaking in tongues with no interpreter as to speaking as a barbarian or an instrument without distinct tones. He also says this... So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of languages in the world, and no kind is without meaning. 1 Corinthians 14:9‭-‬10 He says this in the same breath of what you quoted, and only 8 verses later. You can't just take verses out of context and make them mean whatever you want. You have to study the chapter to understand the verses.

@@echoarmadillo580 so you take the "speaking into the air" and do the same thing you accuse me of doing, except for the fact that your interpretation would mean that Paul did not actually mean it when he said that in tongues you speak to God and that build yourself up. You negate this important revelation by your interpretation. In contrast, I think it is clear in vs 9-11 together that Paul means people in general will think you are speaking into to the air, even though you yourself know you are speaking to God and edifying yourself as he already said prior. He even continued in vs 13 and said again, speak in tongues and pray that you would interpret it so the church can be edified, and said that he does it more than all, but that he would always will to speak intelligible words in the gathered assembly to be certain people were taught. He was not degrading tongues like you assume, just only making a point regarding what hearers might think of your tongues if they don't understand. Secondly, I know many people say that God or angels never spoke in a non-earthly/heavenly language...but consider Daniel 5 and the writing on the wall...God wrote in a language unknown to man! I am part of a non-denominational charismatic church and we definitely flow in this way. We call them believers meetings...They are technically open to the public as are all of our services, yet they are focused on the training and equipping of believers to continue the work of Christ. These are the times when we pray corporately in tongues because people under what is going on, they are learned. I have even seen it happen on a Sunday morning as well, but maybe 3 times in ten years and only when the pastor knows there aren't visitors present.

If no unbelievers or unlearned are present, it is not out of order. If an unbeliever or unlearned is present, God will be faithful to supply the interpretation of the people are willing to cooperate with what the Bible says and not act on their own accord. I understand how you’ve felt on this to and have be relearning what I just stated after looking at the text again and again.

WHAT WAS THE PROBLEMATIC PRACTICE OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES AT CORINTH IN 1 COR 14? 23 If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your minds? 24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, 25 the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you. When I was a new Christian, someone told me that speaking in tongues without interpretation would drive people away from the gospel. "It is madness to them," I was told. I was confused and wanting to do the right thing, I stopped worshipping God in tongues during the corporate worship part of the service. I so wanted to live a life pleasing to God. Then in seminary, I asked a godly scholar, about this passage. He unpacked this for me in way that left me speechless. The answer was so obvious, yet I missed it. The context is "the whole church comes together." (v. 23) So, we're talking about practice in community worship and fellowship. Look at the parallel structure. If.......all speak in tongues (v. 23) But if all prophesy.....(v. 24) Whatever the practice, it was the same for tongues and prophecy. The "all" practice can only be "ALL AT THE SAME TIME" or "ALL IN SUCCESSION." There are no other options. But if it is talking about all at the same time, prophecy would be just as confusing and disorderly as tongues. Think of the whole congregation all reading from a different portion of Scripture at the same time. This would be just as unedifying to the mind as all praying in tongues at the same time. So, this passage clearly does NOT address the problem of all speaking at once. Now, let's consider all in succession. If this practice refers to both gifts, the passage makes sense. Imagine a service in which each person stands, speaks in tongues without interpretation, and sits down! Indeed, unbelievers or ungifted attendees would think they are crazy--UNLESS THEY ALSO INTERPRET. (1 Cor 14: 14-19) All prophesying in succession would make perfect sense of the passage. So, what does 1 Corinthians say about a congregation worshipping God in tongues. Nothing. The Scripture doesn't address the issue. People worshipping are not addressing the congregation but God. I've been in non-English speaking congregations in which everyone has hands raised and is praising God in Chinese, Tagalog, Spanish, and tongues. I was not confused. I don't think they are mad. Their words don't need interpreted. They are not talking to me, teaching me, or addressing me; they are addressing God. The principle that applies is 1 Cor 14:39-40, "So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But let all things be done decently and in order." Someone yelling at the top of his or her voice every week during worship in tongues or prophecy or constantly interrupting a teaching time with tongues or prophecy might still be out of order. I felt so freed with this clearer understanding of Scripture. If I am worshipping, with my indistinguishable voice blended into the din of praise, no interpretation is needed. I am using the gift in the context of worship and prayer not to address the congregation. The practice stands up to Biblical scrutiny.

I’ve interpreted tongues once in my life. I personally heard a voice which seemed to be interpreting what was being said and I repeated what that voice said. A friend of mine said for him it’s like hearing the another language you know. So I doubt it’s the same for everyone

I think it can be different for each person. For Daniel, when an unknown language was written on the walls, there were 3 different words that actually was interpreted into 3 complete phrases. So it wasn't a word for word translation like Spanish-english would be. I believe the handwriting on a wall is a good lesson for all regarding how God operates at times!

1 cor 14 actually says that if no one is around to interpret, to pray quietly to yourself and to God. You're good!

@@BEABEREAN10 On the subject of “the Angelic tongue” is a real language, I was in a home group once, and we rarely prayed together in tongues but on one occasion we were all sat in silent prayer then myself and one other guy started praying in tongues at the same time, and our first six words were the same. Curious! I remember being pretty surprised, it was quite affirming of each other.

In think we can be certain that practicing rapid gibberish of American consonant-vowel combinations is NOT at all what was happening in Acts 2 or commended in 1 Cor. 13-14. You raise a good question.

The tongue is a sign of judgement to Israel, they are the unbelievers in question here as a fulfillment of prophecy in Isaiah 28.

Actually, Mary Ellen is not mistaken. I’ve heard that warfare in the natural can be 90% boredom and 10% shear terror. Most, if not all of the time, tongues in private prayer can seem like nothing is going on. But there can be moments where you step into something akin to a fight, or wrestling.

That wasn't in a church setting though. And those people were Jews hearing the apostles testify about Christ and His resurrection. I think the context of the tongues is different so you can't really make a fair comparison.

Tongues in a church has more of a cadence and phrases to it than personal tongues. It is more in the form of a message. It is the Holy Spirit speaking to the Church. If you want the interpretation of a message in tongues you need to firstly ask the Lord for it. He will give it if you are bold, full of faith and ready to step out and begin. The Lord wants to speak to us more than we want to hear from him. You can ask the Lord for the message in tongues AND the interpretation. Like a prophecy, as you begin, trusting the Lord to take what you are offering him in your beginning in faith and boldness, you will find the Holy Spirit can meet you there and take what you begin with and give you a revelation. Receiving a revelation from the Lord is an amazing experience. God will also give you the interpretation if you ask as you should be ready to give the interpretation if no one else starts out. Again you are concerned to show the Lord, to give what he gives you and only what and as he gives it to you. Personal tongues isn't a message to people and therefore might not have this form. A revelation comes as a spontaneous and unfolding realization provided by the Holy Spirit. Then there is the opportunity if you ask God for the interpretation and someone else gives the interpretation it is very edifying when the interpretation they give is the same interpretation that you received by revelation of the Holy Spirit. This is the ministry of confirmation which you can also participate in as a believer. The same ministry of confirmation applies to prophecy.

There may not be a tongue of angels, but there very well could be as well right? We don't actually know for sure. But one thing for sure is that Paul actually talks about an unknown tongue that when he prays, no man understands. So if we say that all tongues should be known languages, then Paul is contradicting this rule. Not to mention, if they are always known languages used to speak to others present who speak another language, then why would we even need a gift of interpretation? It seems to me, the interpretation gift is specifically for the time when unknown tongues are being spoken. This could be angelic language as Paul alludes to, but again we cannot be 100% sure. But Paul is clear it's not always human languages, don't you agree?

@@BEABEREAN10 Acts records that the people gathered on that day were Jews and proselytes that were dispersed Jews who had gathered in Jerusalem for Pentecost.The focus wasn’t the language although they spoke in different languages. What amazed them was…..each one of them was hearing them speaking in his own language. What were they speaking? The mighty deeds of God. There were two responses. Some were curious and I believe were prepared to hear the word preached. The others mocked. Open ears to hear.

@@rosehammer9482 I fully agree with that! I am not saying that tongues are never a known language, there are clear times in the bible and modern history that shows that example. BUT...as we see by Paul's teaching in 1 cor 14, there is a second kind of tongues called unknown tongues that is between you and God and would require a gift to interpret. I believe in the two kinds that are seen in scripture, it seems most are only okay with the kind that is the known language examples in Acts, and they ignore Paul's further teaching in Corinthians.

Prophecy is better for the congregation and tongues for personal edification (unless interpreted) And the Interpretation may or may not be translated (word for word) or interpreted as to the meaning of the spoken word...hope that helps. This taught and imitated phenomena cannot possibly be the supernatural work of the Spirit described in 1 Cor 13-14, nor in Acts 2.

I have wondered the same thing about those who only speak 2 or 3 syllables. On the optimistic side, they're saying"praise God" over and over in tongues; on the pessimistic side they are not saying anything, just making noise. I hate to say this but a lot of the times that I have seen tongues being spoken I strongly suspect that it is fake. I don't want to believe this, and I sure am not the one who can tell whether it is true or not, it's just a bad feeling I have inside. I would love to see true tongues spoken and a true interpretation. That would make me so happy

Also, on the question of "Why do we need tongues to (or another spiritual gift for that matter) edify?", it's been my experience that that's God participating with us and living within His church. Maybe that's partially what is meant by being "partakers of the divine nature." Before believing the gifts still exist today, I didn't feel or understand in what ways we were truly connected to God. He was in Heaven and He had given us this Book to live by, and one day we would be with Him that was all.

I think tongues can be the "scariest" of the gifts to non-believers or cessationists, etc. It's weird when you first see it and hear it and if you haven't been taught about it, it makes no sense. Understandable that you were hesitant to embrace it. BUT so glad you didn't ignore it!

@@BEABEREAN10 I have always felt like tongues were a real language based off of Scripture. Whether it be the language of angels or of men it is still real language that is being used. I have faith that when the Holy Ghost moves on me He is using real language. I have experienced doubts around this before and these experiences did help however. I think I would still be Pentecostal even without these experiences of having people know what I was saying- but it’s definitely been a thing that has helped me keep going.

Makes sense. But i also think the scriptures can be really personal because of the holy spirit with us when we read them.

I am charismatic. I don’t go to the churches with Kingdom Now or Dominion theology regarding end times. I don’t go to heavily NAR infiltration. I go to Methodist and constantly Miss the move of the Spirit.

@@meggy8868 the ultimate thing would be to combine good theology from the more conservative churches and holy spirit moving as we see more often in the charismatic churches. I would love to go to a church like that. The last church I went to never talked about the gifts of the Spirit or anything like that. They definitely believed in the Holy Spirit, they just didn't ever talk about the gifts. I would love for somebody to train me in the gift of discernment of Spirits because I've never met someone that has that gift

So what language do angels speak? Or another question, why does Paul tell the Corinthians that when he speaks in tongues that no man understands. Why does he specifically call them unknown tongues? And finally, if the tongues were real languages used to communicate the gospel message, then why would we even need a gift to interpret them? Wouldn't the hearer who needs that message be able to comprehend with the gift of interpretation?

How else would they communicate with OT figures like Abraham or Moses without speaking Hebrew and then also communicate with NT figures in Greek or Aramaic. The same way God can communicate with believers of all languages. “Why does Paul tell the Corinthians that when he speaks in tongues no man understands?” This is assuming that the tongues in question are some unknown language (which goes to your next question), however if the tongues are of the same nature as what we see at Pentecost than they would be known languages. Imagine that Paul is speaking in tongues to a group of Hebrew speaking and Greek speaking people, but the tongue that Paul is speaking is another language like Chinese, in that scenario nobody would understand what he is saying. “Why does he specifically call them unknown tongues?” He doesn’t. “Unknown” tongues is not found in any of the original manuscripts for 1 Cor 14. If you look at modern translations like ESV or NASB you will see that they redact the word “unknown” since it is not in the original text. “If the tongues were real language used to communicate the gospel why would we need an interpreter” Simply put if someone is speaking in a foreign language wether a real language or a spiritual language it would have to be interpreted if the audience does not speak that language.

My quest though still stands, even when you remove the word "unknown" the text still says that the tongues Paul is talking about is not for man, and it says no one understands him. 1 Corinthians 14:2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. Notice Paul even says they are mysteries. This seems pretty unknown to me. I am not in any way saying tongues is ONLY unknown, but to say that they always have to be known languages is dishonest. When Paul says no one understands, that's what he means. Also to say that because angels communicate to men in man's own language means that they don't have their own heavenly language is a fallacy. If I know multiple natural languages and you hear me speaking to someone in Spanish, you can't simply assume I don't also communicate to my family and friends in English. It just happens to be what you hear at that time. Also, I agree that if God gave me the ability to speak Chinese to a congregation of people who don't speak Chinese, then the gift of interpretation would be needed. But, again, there are people in the world that understand Chinese, so why would Paul say no one understands and that it's communication between you and God. In summary, between Acts and Corinthians, I see the Bible teaching two kinds of tongue's. Known tongues to minister to men, and unknown, mysterious tongues that ministers to God, but can be interpreted to bring edification to the body of Christ. Let me know you thoughts! 😃

As far as I can tell you are equivocating the idea of tongues not being spoken to men and tongues not being for man. 1 Corinthians 14 never says that the tongues are “not for man” as if they are impossible for any human to understand. Rather in the context Paul is writing about that tongue is for communication between the individual and God. This doesn’t mean that speaking in tongues is only done to speak to God because Paul tells them later in v5 that it’s possible for another person to interpret the tongues. I agree, the tongues would be mysteries especially if the language being uttered is foreign to you. If someone was speaking to me in Chinese it would all be mysterious and unknown to me regardless of if they are speaking in the Spirit that’s why Paul says that the tongues would be mysterious to a bystander unless an interpreter was present. “But to say that they always have to be known languages is dishonest. When Paul says no one understands, that’s what he means.” I disagree that it is dishonest. It seems fair to understand tongues as being human languages that most people don’t speak. After all that is the example we see play out in Acts 2. Let me be clear, I never stated that angels do or don’t have their own language that they communicate. I simply stated that in every instance in scripture that God/angels speak to man it appears that it is done in a human language. The problem is when we try to assume/force some unknown angelic language onto the meaning of “tongues” when the use of “tongues” in places like Acts refers to human languages. “There are many people in the world that understand Chinese, so why would Paul say no one understands and that it’s communication between you and God” Because if you are speaking in a language that is unknown to the audience then the only one who would understand would be God. Paul points out the importance of speaking in a tongue that is either understandable or interpretable in 1 Cor 14:9-11. Once again if “no one understands” the tongue then it would be foolish for Paul to expect that it’s possible to have an interpreter. Now to be clear I’m not claiming that the spirit has no influence here. I think it’s perfectly reasonable for someone who only knows one language to be able to interpret another language through the power of the Holy Spirit. Anyways I’m curious to hear your thoughts!

There is the supernatural mysterious tongues that is between you and God but could also be interpreted by a gift of the spirit to bring edification to the whole body. This kind is often where it would be seen as tongues of angels since no man understands it except God, but not limited to that either as it could be a natural language. And then there is the 2nd kind of tongue like we see in Acts 2 which is known human language's given supernaturally to minister to people. I think the Bible is very clear about these two kinds of tongues. I do find it a bit interesting that you say "if no one understands then it's foolish for Paul to expect that it's possible have an interpreter"...this is disheartening because you assume that the holy spirit would not be able to give someone an interpretation of a language no one understands. But please do this for yourself, pretend for a minute you believe there is a language of heaven that men don't know, now why couldn't the HS give us this language AND also give us the gift to interpret this language? Do you really think that's not possible? It seems to me this would be the exact reason we would need a GIFT to interpret the tongue is because no man can understand it. Secondly, I think you are wrongly equating the words translation and interpretation here. Paul says there is a spiritual gift of interpretation, as the Spirit wills. Interpretation=overall message Translation= word for word - in acts 2, they didn't need the gift of interpretation by the spirit to know what was being said because they knew the language and could translate it back to others word for word. The tongues were supernatural, the hearing and translation was not. This is different from the example in 1 cor 14 where Paul says to pray that you'd interpret it since he realizes that there is no one present to translate it naturally, so it requires a gift so you can gather the overall message of the mysterious language to edify the body. Again, this could be a natural language and no one who speaks it is present, but I don't think it's an accident that Paul mentioned tongues of angels in this same context of spiritual gifts. Again, thoughts are appreciated! I love this stuff!

Not recorded, but years ago I was at a men’s prayer meeting in Germany while I was stationed there w USAF. We were all praying in tongues quietly and then one of the brothers began laughing out loud….naturally we stopped and asked him why he was laughing…he said, “Brother, do you want to know what you (myself) were saying in the Spirit?” “Yes, what?” I said. “You kept saying, God is good, God is good, God is good!” This brother was a Russian linguist for the USAF! I can testify that I knew not a lick of Russian! It blessed us all! Like a mini demonstration of Pentecost. It wasn’t the speaking so much that was supernatural, it was what was BEING SAID. Glory to God. How we need some good old fashioned teaching on this subject!
