Work Capability Assessments for Employment and Support Allowance and Universal Credit
You may need to have a work Capability Assessment.
This will help the Department for Work and Pensions find out if you could do some type of work, and any support you may need to move closer to work. This could include work you have not thought about before.
A registered and qualified healthcare professional will carry out your assessment. This will help the Department for Work and Pensions to understand your capability to work with your disability, illness or health condition.
Your assessment could be
• face to face
• over the phone
• by Video
• using British Sign Language (BSL) on the video relay service
If you need an assessment, you will get a letter to tell you how the healthcare professional will carry out your assessment. The letter will also tell you the time and date of your assessment. If your assessment is by video relay service your appointment letter will give you details of how to access the service.
You must let the healthcare professional know straight away if you are not available to attend your assessment. The contact details will be on your assessment letter.
The assessment should last between 20 minutes and 1 hour but may take longer.
You can have someone with you at your assessment for support. This should be the person who knows you best and understands you and your circumstances. This could be a relative, support worker or friend. They must be 16 years old or over.
If you need a healthcare professional of the same gender as you, please let the health care professional know as soon as possible.
During your assessment, the healthcare professional will discuss how you do daily tasks. They will not be diagnosing or treating your disability, illness or health condition. They will ask you questions and make a note of your answers.
If you have any new evidence of how your disability, illness or health condition affects your ability to do daily tasks please discuss this at your assessment. Only bring new evidence we have not already seen, such as medical reports, care or treatment plans and test results. You do not need to ask or pay for new evidence, only bring it if you already have it.
The healthcare professional will treat you with respect and will give you plenty of time to explain how your disability, illness or health condition affects you.
After your assessment, the healthcare professional will give the Department for Work and Pensions independent medical advice about your ability to do daily tasks.
If your assessment shows that you can work, the Department for Work and Pensions can help you find the types of work you might be able to do. The Department for Work and Pensions can also discuss any changes you may need to your working environment or duties.
