Bob, I agree with your philosophy. My father recently died after spending his last twenty years being a bitter, angry man because he didn't get to buy more shares of a stock, that later did exceptionally well. Instead of embracing and enjoying his beautiful home and yard or traveling or doing anything he could have to enjoy life he wasted those years in anger and bitterness. So anyone reading this, please don't work yourself to the point of poor health or be bitter about what might have been. Get out there right now and live in joy for all that you do have. My husband and I taught in Eskimo and Indian villages for 25 years. We did not make a lot of money, and our retirement is small, but we loved what we were doing. We now live full time in our 5th wheel trailor, we don't have lots of money but we have great memories and great adventures planned ahead. Live now, you may not have tomorrow!!! Cheryl

Greg, thanks so much for your kind reply to my post, it meant a lot to me!!! Enjoy it when you do hit the road. I hope in the time until you can full-time that you'll weekend camp or do other things that bring you joy!!!! We all need to find joy in our lives. Cheryl

Thanks for the reply, glad I made you happy. We have the camping thing covered, for sure! Cheryl, we did plenty of weekend car camping and RVing over the years. Mostly in the Adirondack mountains in NY state, but FL, PA,MD, MA, ME, VA, TN and did I forget the South and North rim of the Grand Canyon. Right now we are perms in a private LGBT campground in NE PA for a couple years called Camp Oneida (It's a little different, as far as "camping" goes- LOL). My wife of 17+ years and I look forward to living at Oneida in the summer and traveling to a warmer climate the rest of the year. We have 4 kids and so far 5 grandchildren, mostly in this area (adding another daughter-in-law, summer '18) I am very fortunate. Continue to enjoy the freedom, you seem to be doing that quite well. Sincerely, Greg

Less than a year ago my friend and mentor passed away suddenly. All he did was work, work, work his whole life. Oh sure, he had money and cars, and a nice house full of nice things. But, in the day's immediately following his death all I could think of was how empty and worthless it all seemed to me. We work so hard, and for what? Only to die and leave it all behind in the end! There's so much more to life! This series brought back a lot of those raw feelings, thoughts and emotions I had back in January after his death. My friend and mentor taught me the most important lesson there is, and it took him dying for me to get it. Life is short and we only get so many trips around the sun. When it's over, it's over. Stuff is just stuff collecting dust on some shelf. Live while you can now and have no regrets later. Safe travels everyone.

Thank you Bob! My Mom was a tough German nurse who was all about working and doing even if you didn't want to. Mom is 93 now. Unfortunately, I became a workaholic just like Mom. Thank goodness my daughters did not follow that path. I'm so close to retirement I can't wait. Just bought a used RV, now need to put the Townhouse up for sale, retire, and drive out of So. Cal. No one on their death bed ever said, "I wish I spent more time at the office." See you at RTR 2018.

My work was in working with deaf and hard of hearing children to grow and become their best self. This life was not a cog in a machine yet it provided monetary benefits. I had and still have time to explore for my joy. Work is not a bad word.
@preachersdtr1
@preachersdtr1 6 лет назад
@hudsonsailor54 It sounds like you and Bob are saying the same thing: You DID work at something that IS worthwhile and which DID fulfill you. That it had monetary benefits is the delightful icing on the cake, for you; and, shows that your Employer was/is a person or entity of integrity with their values in the right order. That's not the kind of scenario that Bob describes when he does these videos, yet you seem to find what he's saying offensive in some way. Why? I've never heard him say, or imply, that work is bad or is a bad word. That's not his point. We ALL - unless we inherit vast fortunes AND have no social conscience, or unless we are otherwise parasites on our parent(s) or mate or any other hapless soul who does not know how to get rid of us; OR , unless we are physically or mentally incapacitated and truly unable to work - work. We work. Bob works. This Channel is one of his jobs. You were blessed with a job you loved AND which paid you well. So - he's not even talking about you. What am I missing? You were not working just for "stuff," were you? That's certainly not what I understood you to say in your Comment. Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying. I'm truly puzzled that you ended your comment with "Work is not a bad word." Show less REPLY

My heart is heavy right now because my little Yorkie, Parnell, my 14 year faithful companion died on September 12. Some of you reading this will say he was only a dog, but after he passed everything in the house turned to stuff. The quiet that fell upon my home is like a window being opened and the life was sucked out. Watching Bob's videos got me thinking lately, and I was working on making a better life (more TIME) for my daughter and little companion. His passing reminded me that we don't know what will happen after this very moment in life. I am thankful to Bob, and other people on the net that take the time to share what they have learned in life. I spent more time with my little Parnell because of these people I don't know. Thank you for sharing your insight.

I think that work and money is not the problem as much as the pressure on people to acquire so much stuff. People simply don't need so much stuff. We tend to work and go into huge debt trying to impress others who we don't really know and who really could care less. I enjoyed my work and while I appreciated the money that I was making would have worked for much less. I simply enjoyed my working years and am now enjoying my retirement years. I donate a large percentage of the money that I have made to charities such as food banks and Habitat for Humanity. I got pleasure from my work and also get pleasure in my giving. So I don't view work so much as the evil in our lives, but rather view consumerism as the real tragedy.

@Phoenix-uy7nm
@Phoenix-uy7nm 6 лет назад
No, I think work and money ARE the problem. The main one, anyway. Most people I know in my age group (30's) are slaving away just to make sheer ends meat - we're not out buying big TV's or fancy cars or designer bags. For the most part, we're trying to pay rent, and it's totally killing us. There are indeed some flaky young people buying just to show off, but I don't think it's the majority of us.

At 55 years old what I see often in the next generation is that they barely or don't make ends meet but they have to have the best smart phone ,cable package and a substance habit. And they think these are the things that bring you happiness so you have to have them at all costs.

I'm a Christian and I really liked this video! For me, I may not ever get to live MY dream of being a nomad, and I have to work hard to help my family out... honestly this is more aligned with my Christian values than living for myself. I know other believers will understand: if you really want to live a joy-filled life, you have to die to self.

Individual Salvation is simply a separate matter which I didn't hear discussed in any way, shape or form in Bob's video. Thank you for another clear, precise and goal-related video, Bob! God Bless you and everyone that is struggling to live life to the fullest, and relating how important it is to always share it with "Tribe", Friends and Family! Overall good message Bob. Thank you. I read comments and it is true not everyone is going to be a nomad but I think there maybe some literalists here. I hope to be semi nomadic and just to have a lot more free time to pursue doing the things I love. Watching Bob's videos and others had helped me move forward with dreams I have both with career and with the minimalist life I have wanted to live. Tiny house living is where I am heading for now but the values Bob is sharing here are true. The pressure to buy a house that is perfect with the perfect yard and perfect deck for entertaining and the perfect car and career to go with all leaves no room to entertain or play with your kids or even play golf with a buddy. It's a trap that someone else caught you in so they have it all fooling you into thinking you can too. We all can't go into an RV but we all can drop the rat race to some measure. It really is a quiet revolution and you gain your life and freedom to live as you choose.

This Elisabeth you speak of is absolutely right... That is a question we should all be asking our selves before our death bed. This question I believe is appropriate and I have actually heard of people living this question every day with action and happy to do so... The question is what can I do to make someone's life better today? Dwelling on this question to long is not what your looking for... Action is. Bob your videos are so helpful and encouraging you are living the question for sure...

There was not one word about suicide in what Bob is saying. The only way out of this life is death and EVERY ONE will experience it. Some people will die unexpectedly and quickly maybe from an auto accident and some will be in bed or very sick and have time to think thoughts like Bob is expressing. It is in these situations when you will realize and know that material things and money are worthless. Your happiness is from the people you helped or the people you created happiness in that are worth everything. Thanks Bob!

Thank you for sharing this perspective. Sometime ago I came across an wonderful saying -- "May you always have enough ___________" The blank is for whatever is appropriate at the time of this saying. For example Peace, Joy, Love, Courage, Hope, Food, Money for what you need or want to accomplish and on and on. The key word is "enough" not all, not everything. "Enough" because that is all we really need. Happy and safe travels and may you always have enough. :-)

I feel the hand of Carolyn with the staging of your backgrounds and the intro music. Good job you two.

I like your half work half dance. I work on a barge tow boat. I work 30 days on and 30 off. Basically I only have to work 6 months a year. I work more but it's cause I love my career.

I decided early when my children were young to be a stay at home mom so glad I did the years have flown but I've had so many good times with my kids who are close to 18 and close to 24. Wouldn't take all the money in the world for those memories.

I don't know where you are but if I were there I would only leave kicking and screaming. THAT is the most perfect place I have seen for me! Clusters of flowers waving in the wond, surrounding evergreens and the snow capped mountains teaching up to the clear blue skies. THAT is where I long to be. I am a cancer patient. I imagine it will win in the long run. My goal is to hit the road on my 70th birthday. I am on hemp now and today I was told there is another suspicious mass. I feel like I am in a race with death. I hope I get a chance to meet you. I am planning my escape can now. It is my escape place when my life experiences become overwhelmingly sad. I my mind I go t my van. And now I can see, in my mind's eye, the perfect, PERFECT, location. Thank you for these videos. You will live on long after your physical presence has gone. You are a treasure!
