The Work Sharp Benchstone is a benchtop knife sharpener with coarse and medium diamond abrasives and fine ceramic for honing. The Benchstone knife sharpener also includes two interchangeable angle guides for sharpening at 20 and 25 degrees. The Tri-brasive sharpening stone rests on the sharpening base and can be locked in to remain rigid, or left unlocked which activates Pivot-Response. Pivot Response is a Work Sharp feature which allows the stone to pivot to the side and follow the curve of the knife helping the user maintain the sharpening angle throughout the full length of the stroke. This video covers the components of the Benchstone, how to sharpen knives and tools, and how to clean, service and replace the abrasives if necessary.

Shoutout to the mentioned hack at 5:00 which is exactly what I went for with my order. I need my scissors as sharp as I can keep them to reduce cutting strain. Working daily with cutting prepreg carbon fiber plys and very coarse materials in composites and my scissors wear down fast, and the fine diamond --> fine ceramic --> leather strop keeps my KAI scissors tip top.

I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm ru-vid.comUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.

For freehand this bench Stone works amazingly well. Although I wish they would come out with a 1200 grit before jumping on the ceramic. Instead of going from 600 grit to ceramic. But get an absolute mirror edge with this system coupled with Bark River CBN emotions on four leather strops. Starting with 4 micron, 2 micron, one micron, and ending with 0.5 micron. Which is 4000 grit, 8000 grit, 16000 grit, and 32,000 grit.

Josh, another great tutorial. One thing I noticed , on the knife you pushed the blade sharp edge away from you. On the axe, you pushed the sharpener from the back towards the tip of the blade. Can you explain the reason for the difference? Thanks
@WorkSharpOutdoor
@WorkSharpOutdoor 4 года назад
Hi Don, it's mostly a matter of preference, there are excellent sharpeners who use either technique. Sharpening an axe is a much larger job and I wanted to remove material quickly by moving back and forth. When sharpening a knife my goal is precision, so perfecting a repeatable stroke is idea. I do this by only pushing in one direction repeatedly.

I just bought the Precision Adjust Elite system and and very happy with the results so far. So when would you select the bench stone system over the PA system?
@WorkSharpOutdoor
@WorkSharpOutdoor Год назад
The PA system is better for someone that may be stating out or wants to make sure they are getting a precise/specific angle on their knife. The benchstone is free hand so there is always going to be more human error involved. That said, its hard to beat the feeling for sharpening a knife free hand on a stone but it does take some practice.

Because my knives are beveled, I find when using angle guides, I'm would be ending up 2-3 degree higher, depending on the grind of the knife. Then 20° guide becomes 22-23°. Would you consider compensating it when making angle guides?

I have almost all of your guys products all are fantastic but I agree with a lot of people most guys really into knives never go above 20 degrees and most don’t go that high there would be a lot more interest from the knife Community if you would make guides for a lower angle I sharpen all my knives to around 17 and never had any problems sometimes 15 depending on the knife so you should definitely make a lower angle guide even if you have to buy it separately cause a lot of people that don’t use your product but don’t know how to free hand would be taking another glance at it

does the pivot response make it ideal for sharpening like cold steel tanto point without readjusting/repositioning your sharpening stroke for the flat(or slightly curved) edge and tip?
@WorkSharpOutdoor
@WorkSharpOutdoor 3 года назад
If the blade has a transition (like a tanto), sharpen each section separately to maintain a crisp transition. If either of the two sections are curved then the pivot response is great for following the curve of the blade.

I'm confused. How do you raise a burr when you're pushing the sharp edge toward the stone rather than the sharp edge trailing the direction of the push?
@WorkSharpOutdoor
@WorkSharpOutdoor 3 года назад
Good question.... it still raises a burr but it is a bit less pronounced than if you make a trailing stroke. I'm not entirely sure why that works but I know that it does based on experience.
@clevinski
@clevinski 4 года назад
Question... the instructions that come with the sharpener say to dry brush it to clean and to never use water. Your comments said to use mild soapy water and rinse with clear water. Which is correct?
@WorkSharpOutdoor
@WorkSharpOutdoor 4 года назад
Soapy water on the ceramic plate is one of the best ways to clean it. If you use water on the diamond plates be sure to dry them off before storing. It's best to clean them while disassembled and dry before reassembling. For everyday clean up use a brush to remove some of the debris and shavings from the stones. It's like deep cleaning versus a light dusting.
