To be honest, with the exception of Anne Hathaway, Natalie Portman, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Downey Jr, Robert Pattinson, Neil Patrick Harris, Tom Cruise and Will Smith, a vast majority of actors who become famous at a young age usually lose their fame and burn out faster than actors who get famous at an older age.

Here's a question I'd be interested in hearing. I pursued acting out of college so I'd say from about 22-27 (2000-2005). I was born and raised in NYC so I had family and a support system of friends in NYC. I did a 2 year acting program at William Esper Studios. I also took classes at Michael Howard Studios. I had a few coaches I worked with through the years. Of all the people who I did acting with (most were in their 20's, a few in their 30's) I'd say maybe 3 or so are still doing it into their 40's. I became a social worker and later a psychologist. So my question would be: what is the age or timeline that most actors say, "If I don't make it by this point in my life, I'll pursue something else?" I know that's a tough question. For me and most of the friends I met, it was about age 30. They said, "If I don't feel I've gained momentum in my career, I'll do something else." This was my experience. I did off-off broadway plays, children's theater, independent and student films and a few commercials. It's a time in life when people start getting married, owning homes, cars, thinking about stability. It's tough to keep pursuing acting and seeing other friends building their lives if you're still not quite established. I know most actors make very little money on their acting. I hate to be a "debbie downer" because I love movies, tv, theater, etc and so admire the non-comformists of the world but it is a tough question to ask for many who pursue acting.

I cant speak for Will but I would like to respond to your post. I have some experience in common with you. And after getting a college degree for a different career and working in that other career for awhile, I am beginning to pursue professional acting full time now. Thankfully I have a wife to help me make that transition. Having someone else who can share expenses and even support you emotionally can only help. The thing is a part of me always knew that I would come back to my first love eventually. I did so much community theatre and independent film/tv in the Midwest (most without any pay), but it never achieved what I dreamed for myself. Even though I had a lot of credits, there is only so far you can go and only so much you can achieve if you don't go "all in." And I had never fully committed to acting as a profession, I was merely doing it on the side and never feeling like I could even remotely get enough of it. I felt like my whole other career was me giving up on my dream and settling. And I just cant do that. I decided I could live with failure but not with failing to try. I have to take my shot. And I am prepared to do the work and make the sacrifices. And in the end, if you and I both do this, it will all work out fine. We will at least have no regrets. Bryan Cranston has a very good video (where he is being interviewed, there are multiple ones actually) in which he talks about the many years that it took for him to get his break and how discouraging that can be sometimes. But another way of looking at it...the way that I prefer...is to say "look at what happened for Bryan Cranston because he never gave up!" So hang in there, my friend. People either do what they do because of fear or out of love. Choose love. Turn your back on making your choices based on fear. You got this.

Thanks for your response. It’s a great philosophy to have. I agree that playing it safe is a sad way to live. Passion, creativity and risk is where we really come alive.

I am nearly 55 and going back into theatre and film. I have a drama degree and just started taking classes again. What is your happiness factor? My Wife and I were miserable doing the 9-5 corporate thing. We downsized our lives. She teaches dance to toddlers now! She makes much less than she did before, but she now smiles everywhere. As for myself I have more energy than I have had in many years. I make enough to pay the bills. I am now going on auditions again and I find it such a pleasure. Your happiness index is more important than anything. Go for it!

Hi there I am 18 years old and I live in central/eastern Europe Hungary and I want to become a movie actor but not in my native language, I want to act in English, and that's a big problem right there because if I want to start getting into movie acting I need to do theatre in order for experience but for that I need to take some kind of school but all of this would be in Hungarian and I can't really do anything here in Budapest for my dream, In order to succeed I should move to UK or USA I suppose and I should start taking act classes there, but I don't have the budget for these options. Can you help me out with tips or anything basically helps.
@WillyDubz
@WillyDubz 5 лет назад
Read a lot of plays and scripts that you like. Go to the library or look up different scripts you like online. Do it in both your native language and in English. Start learning the first 1000 most common English words and go from there. Take small steps every day towards your goal and don’t be afraid to do community theater in your hometown. Sure it isn’t Hollywood, but it will give you practice. You are rich in time, so make use of that time :)

@@WillyDubz any good books on acting?
@WillyDubz
@WillyDubz 5 лет назад
Astro I’ve read bits and pieces of Uta Hagen’s “Respect for Acting” Stanislavsky’s “An Actor Prepares” and Declan Donnellan’s “The Actor and the Target” Classes I took in college had us reading from these books, but at the end of the day the real lesson that I took away was: 1. Believe in the fiction. 2. Mean what you say. 3. Take it personally. You don’t want to get too bogged down with lessons when what you really need to do is fill out the world and your character with your imagination.

I’ve had my heart set on acting since I was about 10. I started theatre at 6. I’m almost 16 now and nothing has changed. Your videos help me in so many ways. I live in a middle to lower class family in the Midwest so it’s been super hard to set these goals because of living expenses, competition in the industry, etc. Are there any tips you have for younger actors who want to get started in the swing of things a little earlier?
@WillyDubz
@WillyDubz 5 лет назад
Jadelynn Whitley Do as many plays as you can. Learn how to make stuff on your own and try a bunch of different things. If you find yourself spending your free time doing something you think is cool, lean into it. See what kind of agencies are close to you (Voiceover could be awesome too). If there aren’t any then look into what you can shoot yourself. Learn how to take good photos and videos and make your own stuff. It is weird at first, but it gets better as you do it.

As a young 23 year old guy who is a construction worker (I honestly hate my job) if I could go back in time to go to college and take acting classes I absolutely would. I would have aIso taken theater classes in high school. I know it's never too late to go to college unfortunately I don't have the money for it. I wouldn't even qualify for financial aid I guarantee that. Sadly my job pays minimum wage and my boss refuses to give me a raise. Ever since I was a kid I wanted to be a movie actor. Ironically I tend to get nervous and shy in front of a lot of people. But when someone gets to know me I'm a good person. I'm social in my own way I just don't like to show it. Unfortunately when I asked my parents about it once during my childhood they both said no. They were very against it. Now that I'm an adult I'm still trying to figure out what industry I'm meant for. Who knows what the future will bring. Maybe I will try an acting class or an audition for a movie extra sometime.

As a stage actor I wish I did more community theatre during my first year of college before Covid-19 happened because now that it's going on there could be a 50% chance that there won't be any auditions for a while but I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can audition on my phone and have plenty of opportunities before and after the pandemic is over.
