Hello everyone 👋🏻 Hope you're all taking care of yourselves, it's slowly getting warmer by the days in the UK, so I'm really looking forward to spring 🌷
It's been 1.5 years since I've started working as a RA at the University of Cambridge, since then, some things have changed and some have stayed the same, so I thought I'd share my experiences, observations and thoughts in this video.
One major change is that my academic lab is spinning out into a biotech company (which before my Master's, I didn't even know was a thing). In sharing the versatile nature of biomedical research and translational medicine, I hope to shed a bit of light on life in academia vs industry and how it's not always black and white. I hope you find some of this helpful!
With love,
Vy

Hi Vy! I just wanted to say i really appreciate you sharing your thoughts and reflections with us. I can totally relate to your sentiment about being surrounded by much older and wiser colleagues who are in a completely different life stage and not knowing what to talk about or say to them outside of work and feeling the imposter syndrome. That being said i can’t wait for your video on work place etiquette especially in the research setting! :) A lot of people talk about how to get into a lab but not many talk about what its like or what you should be doing once you’re in it, especially in the people aspect.

How do human👥 civilizations evolve from Middle Dark Ages to Industrial🏭 Age and then onto Modern 20th and 21st century? Answering this question completely will help you to realize😃 the critical and crucial connection between a PhD📜 (in STEM 🧬📡field) and industry🏭.

Hi Vy! Im a current student considering biomed for my options as I want to work on cancer treatment research. However, Do you think where I pursue my undergrad has an influence on my future career, would you talk a little bit about ur experience.

I would be lying if I said that university name has zero influence on how easily you land a job in the future. As an RA, I know that part of the reason I got shortlisted to interviews had to do with getting good grades from a good university (imagine if a recruiter had 100 applications, they wouldn't have the time to go through every line in every CV, they'd shortlist based on glancing through the top section, which is usually your education background). However, being at a highly ranked uni without relevant lab experience in your field of interest isn't beneficial either. I've been rejected by countless PhD programmes in the UK so far, but part of that may be because I'm considered an international, so if that applies to you, more internships and lab/work experience is needed to make you stand out!

Are most biotech job tasks repetitive? Like particularly when working in R&D and/or a lab setting?

To an extent yes! Also depends if you are a technician, associate, scientist, team leader etc. position

Can I become a research scientist after bsc in mlt and msc in medical biochemistry
@biomedwithvy
@biomedwithvy Год назад
Yes! Some places give graduate entry level candidates a scientist title (usually industry) and some give a research assistant title. What matters more is how well you fit the job description and what you actually end up doing!

Do research assistant do animal handling too?
@biomedwithvy
@biomedwithvy 9 месяцев назад
some RAs do a bit of wet lab and animal work, some none at all and some animal technicians focused entirely on animal procedures!
