I would encourage anyone to learn the basic of Graphic Design concepts and Fundamentals. Currently trying to switch my career to a more UX/UI related job from Web/Digital Advertising. Maybe a Visual Designer. Understanding the Modernist Design History, and Minimalist design concepts help me create UI layouts. Keep it clean, and don't over design.

Thank you so much for this breakdown. This just reassured me that I made the right choice with traditional graphic design. I just love visual aesthetics moreso than anything. And that's okay. 🤷🏾‍♀️😂 I've recently been having doubts that this might be a dead end field, but we'll just have to see within the next decade. I don't think there will ever not be a need for graphic art in some way, shape or form.

Thanks for the video Christine, very well done! Be a God and do them all! :D In my opinion you can't really be a good designer without having a creative mind with a colourful imagination. As soon as you realize that you can imagine things (typography, apps, websites, games, products, banners, logos, clothes, cars etc) that nobody has seen before and also you can put them down on a paper or on a screen and they are easy to use and understand by the others, you can call yourself a designer. After this when you specialize yourself on a specific field then you start adding that name before Designer in your title, like Graphic, Web, Product, UI/UX, AR, VR, Fashion, Interior, etc Designer.

In countries like India, their is huge difference between payout checks when it comes to UI/Ux design and traditional graphic designer, salaries of graphic designer's are in no comparison when it comes to what UI/Ux designers are getting, I hope this might not be a case in any european and American countries.

Hi there, Thank you so much for this video it was exactly what I needed! I come from a traditional graphic design background, and have been working as a WordPress designer for close to 12 years now. I am tired of the traditional and looking to break into UX. I looked into just going after a AA in UX from a local Community College here in Austin, but I am scared I won't like that even after I do all of it. I simply don't like any of the polishing or "varnishing" as you say. I am just burnt out, however I do love research and analytics. Where would be a good place to start? Just start taking some classes? Thanks!
@DesignGal
@DesignGal 6 лет назад
Hi Rachael! So glad you found this helpful. I think any classes you can take will give you a good sense of if you will like it or not. You can also specialize in the things you DO like. Research/analytics are HOT HOT HOT right now and companies are paying huge salaries for those who can do extensive UX research and analyze data. You might be able to find classes specifically on that! Good luck :)
@shedoesstrategy
@shedoesstrategy 6 лет назад
Thanks I'll look into the research and analytics as that is actually the niche I wanted to go into. Do you find most need a degree to get your foot in the door or just experience and classes? I don't have a degree. Just 2 years of design school and all work experience.
@DesignGal

Honestly, what matters the most is your experience and portfolio. I've seen many designers who are self-taught or have a degree in something other than design and they do just fine! As long as you can show that you can do the work, that's all that counts.

So should we get a ba in graphic design then study ux/ui? How do we study for ux/ui, I’ve typed in ux/ui programs but it doesn’t seems colleges have that as a specific major. So what do I look for when looking for college courses to get into ux/ui? Can u get a job as as ux designer if you major in design and minor in comp science?
@DesignGal
@DesignGal 6 лет назад
UI/UX programs are a little hard to study in college simply because there aren't many programs for it yet, as you found! A lot come from a graphic design background, but others study psychology, Human/Computer Interaction (HCI), and some are entirely self-taught. If you go to school for design, hopefully they will have some web design classes or UX classes, even if it's not a major. If you major in design and minor in computer science, I think that would be an excellent combo to be a web designer as you will learn some programming. For UI/UX, you don't necessarily need to learn how to code, but it is helpful. I suggest you study what really interests you and what you are really passionate about, and if you don't have UI/UX courses in school, find some resources elsewhere and teach yourself. Hope that helps! Thanks for the comment :)

I think either one can work, but it depends on if you want to focus more on the visual/UI design side or on the pure UX/research side. If you want to be heavily involved in the UI/visual design, I think a graphic design course will definitely help.

Hello! It is not necessary to have an engineering background for these roles, but at least knowing the basics of HTML and CSS will help you in your designs and make you more valuable to the team/open you up to more opportunities. I don't know of many good college programs for UI/UX since it is relatively new to being taught, but I am sure there are some out there. I would try researching for some, look at where the graduates and up and try to contact them about their experiences before enrolling, though. Hey thanks! yes they are very few colleges for UX/UI programs specifically. I have seen your other video about differences between Visual communication, UX/UI, and product design. Most of the colleges are offering Communication design/graphic design course. There are a plethora of terms for visual designs!! Colleges have started this new program of digital design as well, and after seeing the course description, I was not able to relate it with UI design or interaction design at all. It would be a great help if you could clear one more thing. A graphic designer can work in any field print or digital media like UI design by putting the right kind of work in the portfolio, right? So If I study graphic design, I will be open to both traditional graphic or UI design, but If I study UI design, I will be limited to only digital media right? Sorry, if there are too many questions, just wanted to clear things out. Your other videos are also very helpful. Thanks again :)

You are right, most design programs in college are focused on graphic or visual design. These will still give you a great foundation for getting into any interactive design, but may not focus on design specifically for these applications-that you will have to learn elsewhere or teach yourself. If you find a program that is specifically geared toward UI design, it will likely be more focused on these types of design applications and less about traditional media (print design, advertising, logos, etc.), but I'm sure many of the same design principles will be taught. If you know you want to focus in interaction design doing Visual or UI design, a focused program would probably be ideal but you should get a lot out of a graphic design program if you can't find one. Hope that helps!

you're a cutie. Just found your channel. I'm currently torn between ios development or product designer... can you tell me what traits would make a good product designer?
@DesignGal
@DesignGal 6 лет назад
Hi Jacob! Definitely check out my videos called "Should You be a Designer" and "Traits of a Good Designer".. I think most of that would still apply to product design specifically. Being purely a developer is a lot different than being a product designer, bur if you can do both that will give you a lot of opportunities and make you more valuable to companies. Good luck!

Hi design gal, thanks for the great video. I had some questions. I am wanting to transition from my sem (ppc, data reporting, analytics etc) career into potentially ux/ui i would be very green. Do you think I would be missing the boat if I started now with evening education and practice? (i have a family so cannot take a huge financial hit). Or would I be better adding to my digital marketing career vs transitioning? Also it looks like ux ui has good earning potential $75k + ($90k avg) . Thoughts on This? Accurate? Increasing? Decreasing? Do many ux/ui professionals code or rather do they need to understand code enough to create feasible prototypes like you mentioned? I am nervous about needing to be a coder, I like the idea of it but my brain just doesn't think that way. I can memorize but not be creative with code. Lastly. Thoughts on job security/longevity of the career. I don't want to start over again and I know there is no crystal ball but just your thoughts as the emergence of ai and robotics come into serious play for our futures and livelihoods. Thank you sorry I had a lot of questions. I liked and subscribed 😁

Hello Jacob! Thank you for watching and subscribing :) It is never to late to learn something new and people are coming into this field at a wide variety of ages. To answer your questions: I actually think your SEM/Analytics background would be really helpful, especially if you want to do UX for web. Not many designers have an SEM background so I think you would have a great edge there and there would be a handful of companies that would be very attracted to that skillset. UX salaries are very good and I think $75k+ is accurate but you are right, the average salary that I'm seeing these days is $100k+. I am not fully UX and more on the visual/UI design side so those salaries aren't quite as high as UX, but still pretty good. I find that if you want to be more on the design side like myself, having coding skills is a definite plus and will allow you to apply for more jobs than if you did not have coding skills. However, if you want to do purely UX (by that I mean user research, testing, IA, workflows, wireframing, prototyping etc), most UX jobs do not require any coding skills as they have a UI or Visual designer (like myself) to do the design and a developer to do all the code. Many prototyping tools these days are no code required, either! Unless a job specifically wants you to prototype in code, you can get by with these prototyping tools (like Marvel, InVision, etc.) Re: job security. I definitely see AI and other emerging technologies like AR/VR coming in to play in the next 10 years. What design and/or UX will look like applied to those fields is yet to be seen, but I do think that having a UX background will apply to many things in the future. But something that is even hotter/more highly paid that you might want to look into is "Big Data" which with your background shouldn't be much of a stretch. So many companies now are collecting so much data, yet they do not know what to do with it or how to synthesize it. These jobs are making very big bucks and are in high demand and low supply. Either way you go, I think you will be just fine! Let me know if I can answer any more questions, thanks again!

So is this different from a full stack developer?
@DesignGal
@DesignGal 2 года назад
Yes, a developer is someone who writes the code that makes a website or app work. They do not design how it looks or works from the user perspective.

Im sorry but saying that traditional design is mostly about aestetics is not correct. You may be need to reevaluate this statement.
@DesignGal

Thanks for the comment! I'm genuinely curious: what would you say traditional graphic design is about?
@NadiaNj
@NadiaNj 4 года назад
To say it’s just mainly about aesthetics is to down play it’s meaning and function in the world. It’s all about communication. To say that making something look good is to say that it’s not particularly all that important. It’s subjective. I’m sure this is not what you meant though but I find it is crucial to correctly represent it because it is important to understand that graphic design and design in general doesn’t have lesser value than any other profession. Each decision made about what something will “look like” or what FUNCTION it will have comes from a deeper knowledge of communication and human understanding of things around us, whether is it print or digital. Everything has function and it communicates something the aesthetic just happens to come into play from the careful decision making of the process and it looks good for that very reason, the design just simply follows the “formula” that makes something look and feel great on top of its other functions. I hope this make some sense. It’s an interesting topic to explore nevertheless. Thanks

Thanks for a video suggestion. My question is web design to ui design possible? Because graphics designer are more to go ui design.
@DesignGal

I would say that web design to UI design is even better than coming from graphic design because you already have a really deep understanding of how the web works and how designs are translated into code. You should have a fairly easy transition I would think!

Does anybody know how much a major in graphic design and a minor in computer science could help me get into ui/ ux?
@DesignGal

Hey Kent! Having a CS minor will REALLY help you get into ui/ux! Any development you can learn will help you become more valuable and be able to design specifically for those applications. I have a friend who did just that and she is killing it! Good luck :)

Oh! I also wanna know that! I'm from Brasil and I want to know an international site to find jobs. Because here the payment is too low. They pay around R$400,00 for a logotype, which means less than a 100 dollars for a brand. T__T

I would look at freelance design sites like remote.com, upwork.com, and there may be a few others. Sometimes you can search social media sites for "freelance design" and find jobs that way. Hope that helps!
