Have you ever heard of a Menopause Fitness Specialist? Imagine having a personal trainer who knows all about your unique needs as a menopausal woman. It’s not uncommon for a woman to need a trainer for the very first time in her life at the time of menopause. "The change" is just that. It’s a time when your body changes in many ways. And working out in traditional ways, with a traditional trainer, may not produce the best results. In this video, I’ll introduce you to Shana Ross of Shana Ross Fitness. She’ll talk about both diet and exercise as critical components of your adaptation to your menopausal life.

OMG this is so spot on! When I hit full menopause I could not hold my weight. I knew by the way my body felt, I had hit full menopause. I have struggled so much, I want to be healthy and as fit as I can. Also you don’t have the energy to do a ton of stuff. Thank you for doing this and being honest. It gives me hope. ❤️

I am not quite finished watching this video, so it may be mentioned later on but an extremely important exercise is "Internal exercise" & what I mean by this is Kegel's! Kegal's require focus on the internal muscles in the Pelvic floor just as much as Barbie T talks about focus on exercise for your body! This is really vital for Kegal's. Google "Kegal Queen" to access excellent advice on Kegal's. I follow her program & it is one the best around that I know of. So many "Professional's" in Women's health actually teach Kegal's incorrectly, just as correct form & focused attention to different muscle groups is required for overall exercise. It is also a vital requirement for exercising internally. It's so great to have these women share their experience & knowledge in the community of youtube, Thank You ladies!

Go to a connection.com The Kegel Queen Alyce Adams. This program has helped me immensely! Interestingly even if you have never been pregnant ( MB has not had children ) at Menopause this makes no difference at all to Pelvic Floor Health. The Kegel Queen is also on FB. It is so important to know the correct technique because a lot of Professionals in Health Care are teaching this vital exercise incorrectly. All the best to our community here as woman, all different, but all with that common thread of "Menopause" 🙋

Thank you for what you are doing. You ARE a Barbie Doll! I started early too. I thought I was PREGNANT. Age 38! Periods abruptly STOPPED. I was afraid to take estrogen. I am now 65. I now have osteoporosis in my hip and in my arm. I am in pretty good shape, kind of. I farm the garlic my hubby started and taught me how to do. I also have two goats that make me smile every day. I stay busy and work hard. You are a gem and a beautiful gal sharing what you know, helping others tremendously. ❤️

I loved this video Barbie! I was excited to hear that the areas that are of value for menopausal women are--- flexibility and balance. I am 62 with no joint pain and recently started running because I thought my belly fat might reduce and my stamina increase. I am a ballet teacher, former ballerina and still take ballet. Thus the first two things are my strength but aerobic endurance is not. I think instead of cardio, I should discipline my eating according to this video! I have at least ten lbs more of belly, thigh, hip fat than I would like. Thank you for introducing such a sensible woman to all of us. I agree about the fasting~ it makes no sense to me at all and glad you validated that.
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 7 лет назад
I love hearing this. I agree with you completely. Don't run. You'll hurt yourself. Blame the extra weight on Mother Nature because our metabolism slows down at menopause ... way down. That makes us gain weight. And for some crazy reason, Mother Nature decided it would be a good idea to accumulate weight in our belly area. Knowing that can help you by keeping you from doing something (like running) that will not lost the belly fat, and only hurt your joints. I'll be giving you more videos here another that address these issues. Stay tuned.
@SarahArnoldTheAccidentalArtist
Argh-- I hate the belly fat but don't really want to change my lifestyle. Technically not overweight , but yes-- vain! :) Thank you for your advice. You look amazing and an inspiration! Think I will get on my bike and more ballet classes instead of running. Hugs~

For those who don't have time to watch the full interview (although its great), a few takeaways: health is at least 80% diet, 20% exercise; way of eating should change to carbs low in starch and higher in fibre, plenty of good quality fats like nuts, seeds, olive oil etc. Don't fast, do eat a healthy breakfast. Exercise: less time and less weight - recovery is not as easy and muscles and joints more prone to damage. Bad diet high in processed foods causes inflammation in joints. Mastering the squat is essential for functional fitness as it is used in every movement in life. Accept that everyone is different and so you should adapt diet and exercise to suit your needs. Resistance training with weights or bands is important to prevent osteoporosis. Slow, mindful movements better than rushing through it. Low impact is best. Balance and flexibility most important and related to core strength. And stretch, stretch, stretch!

If you would like a more efficient delivery of the education, please consider doing one of the following: (1) Buy the set of 15 webinars & watch them all in order (2) Buy the set of 2 DVDs & watch them in order (3) Buy my book & read it in its entirety, chronologically These videos are intentionally long and detailed. Oh my goodness Dr. Taylor. This has edified what I have been doing this past couple of weeks which is concentrating on movement, flexibility/balance doing yoga and stretching. And lifting weights is my favorite but when I do even a hard HIIT workout once a week is doable. I enjoy doing it daily but my body tells me by giving me insomnia that it does not like it. I miss the after workout oxytocin I would get after a run or heavy weight lifting. I am learning. I eat a high fat diet. Avocados, olive oil, nuts/seeds, veggies, moderate protein, low carbs like jasmine rice, sweet potato, baked potato...

@cindystaff2932 7 лет назад
Kelly V. I've heard a lot about the intermittent fasting too. I would like to heard Dr Barbies opinion on the way of eating
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 7 лет назад
I'm more than happy to give you my opinion. And although I always tell you that the only opinion that matters is your own, on this I think my opinion is worthwhile. I think fasting is ridiculous. Just ask yourself: How many animals fast voluntarily if food is readily available? None! So why, then, do humans do it? It isn't what your body wants. The human body was designed to eat frequently ... every 2 - 3 hours. The more time you put between meals, the more your metabolism slows down. The more your metabolism slow down, the more food you store as fat. The more you store as fat, the fatter you are. It's as if your body says, "Hey, I don't know when I'll get fed again, so I'll store as much as I can in the form of fat." Alternatively, if you eat frequently, your body gobbles and processes food quickly. That's called fast metabolism. And because your body knows it will get fed again soon, it does not store food as fat. It all makes sense, doesn't it? I NEVER skip a meal. And I eat every 2 - 3 hours as long as I'm awake. Most thin people eat frequently. That's why they're thin. Most fat people eat infrequently. That's why they're fat.

@@MenopauseTaylor Thank you, Dr. Taylor. I wholeheartedly agree. I think there is a deep confusion between the well thought out "eating small, fresh and real, not snacking between meals" (that is my mantra) versus eating big volumes of food several times a day including right before bedtime (bad). What works for me is eating three times a day. Thank you again, Dr. Taylor!

This is such valuable information! Just today I was at the grocery store, feeling discouraged and emotionally low and looking at the cheesecake and ice cream and I really wanted it, but I thought "what will this do for you? Sure, it'll give a thrill to your tastebuds, but that lasts about a minute and the insulin spike lasts much longer. AND...diabetes runs in your family, so..." I headed for the produce section. Flexibility is the opposite issue for me, I have lipedema which causes hypermobility, so my joints/tendons are prone to injury from being too flexible. I have to be really careful!

I started eating 5 times a day at menopause because I lost weight. I also lost weight when I was on birth control. But fortunately I gained it back very recently. She is a gift to women and so are you! What works for one person usually does not work for another! I was walking 8 miles a day when I broke my ankle in 2 places. I was having balance problems and they wanted to give me anti depressants. Now I can't walk unaided but I am up to a mile a day on a cane. But a big difference from 8 miles. I live in NYC once the blizzards start I can't walk and even before then it will be too cold. Just the gym for me starting next month. I was a personal trainer too and the women used to talk about menopause very mysteriously and were very hesitant to talk about it. I learned this stuff by living it and then read books and so on. I was having my period then. They said just wait until you hit menopause you will see how hard it is. I said hard in what way? None of them would tell me. I really appreciate this education. The "loving my wine at night" comment I used to hear from most of the women. Also smoking to lose weight. They usually don't care unless they have bladder cancer. I have a friend with bladder cancer and she is getting hypnosis for quitting smoking. I had to learn the stuff she is talking about from a PT when I broke my ankle. I am not working out nearly as much as I used to before the fracture. I have severe Osteoporosis and getting my updated Dexa in December. I am taking private Tai Chi lessons for balance and movement. The movements she is doing are like what they teach in therapeutic Tai Chi. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication! Great video!

Her diet sounds so similar to the keto diet that changed my life. I lost the last 20 pounds that seemed impossible to lose. Gained energy, returned to my youthful small waistline again. And yes, I love all the wonderful healthy oils, more protein no more aching joints. I’m able to play with my grandkids in every way. It’s also helped me to eat more calories than I’ve eaten since being a teenager. Whole heartedly agree that what I fuel my body with is MY CHOICE! I choose to use real protein, fats and low carb vegetables !! Thanks for sharing this! It explains why keto has been so amazing for me. ♥️♥️♥️

This lady talks sooo much sense and a massive inspiration. Thank you MT for this very important video and message. I'm going to take mostvof the advice on board. My only kickback is her diet. There is so much unbiased scientific evidence and data now showing that eating meat, dairy, fish and eggs is not optimal nutrition for our bodies and consuming large amounts of processed oils too when whole food plant based fat is far better (eat the olive not olive oil). So, I guess I'm so pleased she feels heaps better ( I truly mean that) for all the changes but what's the long term effects if her dietary lifestyle rating the animal products? I know you don't advocate that either. It goes against everything Dr Caldwell Esselsteyn, Dr Michael Greger, Dr John Mcdougall, Dr Dean Ornish, Dr Neal Bernard, Dr T.Colin Campbell, Dr Milton Mills, Dr Kim Williams, Dr Douglas Lisle, Dr Goldhammer and the lovely Dr Brooke Goldner (to name a few) advocate. I know that some people will scoff at giving up these foods with the "we have eaten meat for years mantra", but health wise, they are not the best for added excess cholesterol, saturated fat, AGEs, TMAOS, animal hormones, IGF1,,,,, etc). So, I guess I was a little disappointed because as she quite rightly says diet is 80/90% of our success and all these factors contribute towards major Western diseases which, with a lack of estrogen (which also protects us) is a recipe for disaster long term. Surely! P.s. I'm certainly not consuming coconut oil regularly as Dr Greger also states (and you've recommended his book) it's not good.

I think the best thing to do is to listen to YOUR body and do what's right FOR YOU.
@panes840
@panes840 2 года назад
@@MenopauseTaylor thank you MT, and from one perspective you are so very right. I do see where you are coming from. From another perspective, I think its actually more complex than that. I could shove meat and fatty cheese down my face and ignore the science just because I like the taste and equally at the same time not give a dam about the planet and the animal cruelty which is aborant and my future health 20 years down the line, because it's "all about me" and what I want (not necessarily need) and what I regard as "best for me". So, I don't think it's that simple. It also depends on who one is listening to in order to make an informed decision yes? These Drs have proven 100% plantbased is superior. Nobody can refute Dr T.Colin Campbell 20 year China Study. So whilst I appreciate your channel is not to shove veganism down everyone's throat (I get that I do) I can't subscribe to someone else saying 90% is diet and by the way eat pork, eat eggs etc. We can lose weight living off cocaine and working out....... Anyway, I chose your channel because you are qualified in womens health, seem totally caring, compassionate , dedicated and vegan yourself because I think you set a great example to others that living on plants is great. You are a vision of health.

Concerning not eating breakfast - I have been doing intermittent fasting for 2 years and have never felt better. I do not feel sluggish from waiting until lunch to eat. In fact, I have more energy than when I was eating in the mornings. My lab results have improved and my weight is down 30+ lbs and I feel way more energetic. How can it be bad for me? Why would anyone force themselves to eat breakfast if they are not hungry?
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 5 лет назад
The better question is, "Why wouldn't you be hungry?" I mean, if you've gone for over 8 hours without eating, your body should need food. That's why "breakfast" is called "break the fast." When you were a baby, you ate ever 2 or 3 hours. You need to consider why you would go for 4 or 5 or 6 or more and not feel hungry. It all has to do with how fast or how slow your metabolism is. And your metabolism is faster if you eat more frequently. It's slower if you eat infrequently. I can't tell you how many women lose weight simply by eating breakfast.

I make up my own exercises. I go to the gym every day, use all the cardio machines (one each day), and then do some resistance training with either weights or bands.
