Working with a Barb Stallion in Morocco

Recently I went to Morocco to work with horses for the Moroccan Royal Society For The Encouragement Of Horses. The horses I got to work with were all Barb stallions, a breed which appeared in North Africa more than 3000 years ago.
This is one of the horses I worked with, and the only thing I did with him was get his attention. I didnt yield him anywhere or ask him to move, I just worked on getting his attention and letting him know that I was aware of where his attention was.

Even though the stallion was a little distracted at the beginning of the video, you can tell he has a nice disposition and is very intelligent. What a nice horse. He’s also gorgeous!!!

I always love a creature's reaction when it thinks, "Hey, this human is Kin!" I saw when the horse was thinking, "Hey, this man's a horse!" I get that look from cats a lot.

@@laurademarrais3248 lol yes, you're right, barbs aren't typically large horses, they were bred to be fast and sturdy to stand the rocky desert terrains

@@imane867 not particularly desert horses, the barbs climbed snowy mountains withstood the burning heat of the Atlas Mountains in the summer but were also very agile and fast, they are the very horses with which Iberia was conquered, Visigoths were surprised how versatile and agile the Moroccan horses were, big advantage for the latter

Not magic just reading the horse. There is no magic in horse training , trainer's know how to perform and do what work's for them especially to the public . There's a lot of egos out there and it's quite easy to make people think it's superior skills, it's not its patience and building trust and a lot of time with the horse reading them in their natural state. Most people don't take or have the time to learn which is sad. I've seen many people get severely hurt trying some thing's that they've seen a trainer do unfortunately it's not the technical part that gets them hurt. I would rather see a trainer help them see with their hands and mind's on the horse not the trainer. That doesn't mean I'm putting the trainer down this guy knows what he's doing I would just rather have and teach the owner's to perform " the magic" themselves with him helping the human and observing.

Cathie B ..Of course I know it is not magic. Warwick has a magical way with them. Unfortunately I came too early, old school, but I had a lot of success and can usually tell what is up with a troubled horse. We didn't have these methods in Australia in my day, so I am really enjoying finding out. My thing was 3 year olds and they always turned out ready for anything, never any resistance, I had a very good man to start them, and he only kept them for 2-3 weeks, he knew where I was at. I'm almost 73 yo now, got one more to "make" before I'm finished.

@@louisecassidy5991 congrats, Louise I wasn't commenting specifically to you only to the word. I've seen so many people get hurt by trying without knowledge on what trainer's do I'm 64 retired now after training and running my facility since the 80's I broke my 1st horse at 15 and yes technically thing's have become finessed since way back we all took hard knocks the horse got the worst of it in my opinion. It's not a trainer's fault a client lacks knowledge but if the client is truely interested I think it's our job to show them how and why. Most don't want to learn they take short cuts,they go to clinics, read a few book's and become experts in disguise unfortunately they're to many factors and to little time spent! A good trainer does spend the quality time and doesn't send a horse out before it's ready if time is available to them. Again most people are not patient they want what we call a 30 day wonder and a finished horse and that just doesn't happen. Warwick has paid his dues so to speak in training and I'm not implying anything less about him or you its the people who haven't paid their dues and think training is magic. Please accept my apologies if I offended you personally that wasn't my intention with my comment.

C.F. Farm ...I've come back here for the reason of my daughter, starting again with a new foal, and I've sent this to her. The fact is there is far more money about than horse-sense, and you cannot buy horse-sense, I don't care who the trainer is, you either have that empathy or you don't. I gave up breeding, training and selling after observing the demise of a few of mine. Now I am all out of horses and far too expensive to purchase these days, but the boss's filly here is going to be started shortly and gods willing, I shall make my last horse. I trust her, Warwick has unknowingly helped a great deal, and all should go well.

DeeDee ...Goes way beyond love. its not a lovey-dovey thing. Horses come and go when you are an expert, and sadly we have to let many go back to the idiots who own them. It is magic, it is gods given, this touch for horses. Either they trust you or they can't. and they cannot trust a nervous person, or who is going to become the leader? They cannot function without a confident and knowing handler/rider. Of all Warwick's videos, this is my favourite.

It's fair to mention that these horses' ancestors were the ones to conquer Iberia, very strong yet very versatile and fast, caught the Visigoths of Iberia off guard, helped the Moroccans get the upper hand with their outstanding performance, had the chance to ride one irl, very unique horses LOVE EM!

I'm a Berber from Algeria and we have a lot of this race in the wild and we love the berber horses because they are so smart and beautiful and strong and they don't get scared from anything just like Berber mentality 🤌🇲🇦🇩🇿

Really appreciated Warwicks approach to join up technique. Have seen some people apply it very aggressively which can essentially amount to psychological abuse. Warwicks application of advance and retreat for desired behaviour gave the horse a quick way to be involved in the process which automatically created an avenue for him to relax and focus. Excellent

This reminds me of the time I was watching my friend work with my off the track thoroughbred (the first time I've put him into a round pen) and she just trotted and cantered a little bit. Then we just let him stand there away from us, but his focus was always on the other side of the fence. As we talked I told her that I said I userally like to finish up with join up or follow up and she said we would have to work him a lot harder and longer for that. Then I said no we don't actually and walked right up to him and waited for him to notice me. When he did notice me I just walked away and he just started to follow me all over the round pen.

I've noticed a trend with the training of these horses. I know this video is 3 years old. However, there's a big difference between when Warwick works with the horse and the typical norm I'm seen in fair/street horses. The vids I've seen there's a lot of leverage, pain bits and confusion. These horses actually look better then most of the ones I've seen.

Spectacular use of your flagging crop. Just watched another horse video that made me cringe. WHen you approached and got this stallions attention so quickly and humanely I absolutely laughed with delight. Great reminder when I get back to round pen work with my horses. Thanks!!

Noticed the stallion kept anticipating the whip way before the camera films the handler tapping his flanks later on. It is agitating to the horse who remembers it and kicking up without the whip at all. This is mentally draining to the horse who is wound up just from that. Also, he is mirroring the handler turning his head to the side repeadly, and horses are keen on surroundings. He is scanning around for Enviromental threats. This comment is at half point of video without seeing how Schiller handles horse which will bee 100% better , I am sure. 😁

Is his repeated back leg action just about flies? Kind of looks like knee to the belly. Love this, as my horse is a grey Spanish Barb. He has a wonderful head but not as refined as this one. I too am curious about the total time with the horse before the hooking on. I suppose will need to subscribe to video library to find that out :) Fair enough.
