Thanks again for the downlow. I wonder if there is any advantage in shooting with higher base ISO's in VLog through some sort of VND? How much ND and what indicators on monitor image? thanks
@stevelitton
@stevelitton 6 месяцев назад
V Log does have a slightly higher base ISO, even higher if you use DR Boost. But the benefit there is that you are getting the maximum dynamic range out of the camera. There may be a little more noise but it's a trade off for that additional dynamic range. The best way to monitor the image in VLog is by using the waveform monitor and luminance spot meter tool. Hope that helps.

What is the native ISO of the GH6? I cannot find this info anywhere on google it seems.
@stevelitton
@stevelitton Год назад
The base ISO in the Normal profile is 100 and 800 when Dynamic Range Boost is switched on. The base ISO for V-Log and Hybrid Log Gamma 250 and 2000 when Dynamic Range Boost is switched on. Hope that helps.

@@stevelitton Hi Steven, thanks for the reply! In my GH6 I can only set Dyanmic Range Boost on for video mode. when I change to Manual photo mode there is no dynamic range boost to support the 800 ISO you mentioned. How did you switch it on for photo mode?
@stevelitton
@stevelitton Год назад
@@JaySea From what I understand in the photo mode, it is always set to 'on' and the camera makes the decision on whether it can be applied to the image. There are no options to switch it off, it is just part of how the camera captures images.

Hi Steven, I've had strange"drift" on the ISO when I have it on Auto ISO. I can have a static shot, steady lighting, and it will move slowly from perfectly exposed to overexposed to underexposed over time. Its' very odd...any ideas? They removed ability to change the upper limit on same ISO screen? With GH5S with ISO button you could change upper limit with front dial and current ISO with rear dial/control dial/joystick.
@stevelitton
@stevelitton Год назад
Oh, good question, it hasn't been removed but it isn't there by default. I made a quick video about this but never published it. Basically, you need to jump into menu -> cog/gear icon -> dial icon (operation menu) -> ISO Displayed Setting, and then from there you can change what the front and rear dials do and make one set the ISO limit while the other just changes the current ISO. Hopefully, that helps and makes sense.

This is great info. I leave my iso high end to auto because I never get into situations in which the iso goes higher than 3200. If I do, then I think carefully if I want to film as it’s too dark. If I change the iso high to 3200, and the camera says it needs more light, does the GH6 increase the other settings and keep the iso at 3200? Thank you.
@stevelitton
@stevelitton 2 года назад
Thank you, glad you found it useful. That sounds like a good way to work, unfortunately I don't always have that luxury. I have found the ISO range quite useable up to 6400 on the GH6. The camera will only make adjustments elsewhere outside of the manual modes. So in shutter priority for example it will be changing the aperture f stop to compensate and in aperture priority it will be changing the shutter if the ISO is locked. If the camera is in manual then you just need to make a compromise. I lock my shutter to 180 degrees, so it is usually the ISO and aperture getting tweaked to get the right exposure.
@Danny-yx7xu
@Danny-yx7xu Год назад
Hi Steve! Your videos are very well explained... But the GH6 is so huge... My problem is that in the screens, ISO Auto appears but without giving the number of ISO calculated for the exposure! Could there be a reason for this? I searched to find a place to show or hide this info but without success. I think the ISO is very important, do you have any idea? Thank you, Dan
@stevelitton
@stevelitton Год назад
Hi Dan, thanks I appreciate you saying that! So when you are set to 'Auto' with ISO, it will show at the bottom of the display as 'ISO AUTO' or in the top left depending which screen overlay you are using. In the photo modes when you depress the shutter halfway it will work out the ISO it needs to use and show it on the display. In the Manual Video Mode, it will give a live readout of what ISO is required all the time as it can change throughout shooting. Hope that helps.
@Danny-yx7xu
@Danny-yx7xu Год назад
@@stevelitton Oh a big thank you! I found an explanation for my search....Actually in photo mode, pressing AF ON does not induce the ISO number. It's only by half-pressing the shutter button halfway that the ISOs appear for several seconds!
@stevelitton
@stevelitton Год назад
@@Danny-yx7xu that's right, that is just because the focus doesn't affect the ISO, so at that point it still hasn't been calculated.

My GH5 was shocking for noise in low light and night time photography. I'm still getting to grips with my GH6 and would love your views on the DR Boost feature. I had a little play and got sacred having to use a '3 stop' filter indoors with such a high ISO. Maybe I need to play more rather than getting scared and running a way. As for noise reduction, my weapon of choice is the paid for version of Davinci Resolve. It like magic with any low light footage I throw at it.
@stevelitton
@stevelitton 2 года назад
Yeah, the GH5 did have some real shortcomings in terms of low light performance but luckily there were some ways around them. I haven't really used DR Boost indoors much to be honest, I used it outside in a few bright situations where I wasn't worried about getting a really shallow depth of field and it did seem to help retain some extra detail. I think it's all just about testing what works for you and how you are happiest shooting and editing the footage. I don't use DaVinci Resolve much just due to the way I have to supply footage to clients but I have used it a few times for personal projects and certainly does have a great set of tools in it.

I don't have that lens unfortunately, so I couldn't test it. Personally I just try to keep it as low as possible, I will sacrifice shutter speed if needed. But I do use Neat Video in post if I have to crank the ISO too high and I find that works wonders in a lot of cases.

Hi Steve! I need help! I just don´t know how to make proxies work on the GH6. I cannot make h264 proxies and if I make prores ones (which I do can) I can´t make the slow motion clips work, they make so many weird mistakes and strange things. Did you make proxies on Premiere with 100 fps? Thanks a lot!!!!
@stevelitton
@stevelitton 2 года назад
Hi, unfortunately I can't currently help with this one as I finally got a new MacBook just before getting my GH6, so I have been a bit spoilt and not had to create proxies. I will try and create some when I get a spare bit of time to see if I encounter the same issues. Worth trying the GH6 subreddit in the meantime as there may be someone who knows there.

with an extended range boost, is it possible to use an nd filter?
@stevelitton
@stevelitton 2 года назад
Hi, yes you can still use an ND filter with the extended ISO range. It tends to be that you need an ND filter when you are looking for a shallow depth of field, at the base ISO and still overexposed.

When shooting on ISO 2000 in vlog, is there a lot of noise in the video? Do you shoot at ISO 50?
@stevelitton
@stevelitton 2 года назад
I don't think the noise at 2000 on the GH6 is bad in my opinion. I tend not to stray outside of the base ISO but sometimes I do when I don't have time to grab and ND and I need to step it down a little bit.
@lnuponom2678
@lnuponom2678 2 года назад
@@stevelitton I do not understand why you need ND?
@stevelitton
@stevelitton 2 года назад
@@lnuponom2678 So say for example you are out in bright sunlight and you want to shoot wide open with a nice shallow depth of field. Sometimes you will get your ISO down to the lowest setting and say for example you are using 180 degree shutter but it is still over exposed at the lowest ISO. So you need to then change the aperture to let in less light and you lose your shallow depth of field. Having an ND will let you block some of the light hitting the sensor so you can still use those settings that would otherwise be unavailable. Hope that makes sense.

@@lnuponom2678 Oh I meant the 50 ISO, I would only really do that in that instance. Otherwise I just stick to the base ISO for each profile, which is just the lowest one without extended ISO on.

Got it Steve. You know I used to watch this guy on RU-vid who did lots of GH5 video and you may know him. Can't remember his name now but he would say shooting at 100 is a big mistake because in order to really get the proper high quality color and highlights one need to shoot with at least 400 iso on the GH5. Do you know anything about that or have any thoughts on it. Also I asked the guy Sean on Lumix live last week about the native ISO's for the different profiles and he said he would get a list and let us know by the end. He did not. I commented the next day asking and he ignored. He try's real hard and he's a nice enough person but kind of full of something. It's a lot of work watching that show but I can get bit of good info here and there. Do you watch it? Let me know if you know about the the native iso and what you recommend in natural and v log.
@stevelitton
@stevelitton 2 года назад
I'll be honest, I don't really watch too many camera videos on RU-vid. Yes, I have heard people say by using a higher ISO you get more highlight detail and less shadow detail. I believe this is different across cameras and picture profiles though and that is why they all have a different base ISO. My train of thought is that I want the cleanest shots possible and I will just exposure them as best as I can. I really like what Lumix are doing with their live streams and I think Sean is doing a really great job making himself available to the community in the way he is. I would imagine that guy has a mountain of questions every day. I get loads and I have no affiliation with Panasonic. Most of the time I will refer them over to them as they are best to answer them, not me. I for one, like that they are listening and adding lots of great new features. Base ISOs are as follows Normal: 100 (DR Boost Off) V-Log / HLG: 250 (DR Boost Off) Normal: 800 (DR Boost On) V-Log / HLG: 2000 (DR Boost On) Hope that helps!
