Hey, very helpful videos on the GH6. My problem is just importing and playing some of the .mov files on my computer and also in Davinci Resolve (free version). Any suggestions about how to get those files to play and edit? I do have an older computer, but my laptop isn't that old and still can't get the .mov files, the higher bit rate ones, to play, and some are corrupted in Davinci or just audio. Am I doing something wrong, or do I just have to upgrade computers? If so, is there a certain kind of computer, laptop, with a certain CPU or GPU, that works well with the GH6 and all its codecs? Sorry for the long post, but this is frustrating.

Hey, thanks, I appreciate it 🙏 You have 2 issues there. The first may be that your computer either isn't powerful enough to play the files or doesn't have a compatible media player. You could try downloading something like VLC. If the video struggles to play then you will want to try using ProRes as that may play a lot better on your computer. The alternative is to use proxies whilst editing. That brings us to your next problem, the free version of Davinci Resolve only supports some 10 bit video files and tends not to work with 10 bit H264/h265. The GH6 shoots almost all 10 bit video files at H264/H265 in the MOV mode with the exception of a couple of the MP4 options. You will need to use the paid version for the video files to work. Rather than shelling out money on a new computer, invest in the paid version of Resolve, if the files are still really slow to play then consider using proxies or try shooting in ProRes and see if your computer handles it better. The files are bigger and there are some frame rate / resolution limitations but you may find it easier to work with in post. Sorry for the long reply, hopefully that helps.

@@stevelitton Thanks so much for your reply, man. I didn't really expect such a detailed response, but yes, it's helpful. The files all play with VLC, but like you said, not on Davinci Resolve because of the 10 bit H264/H265 files. I appreciate you trying to save me money, but I'm not sure they will play even if I have the studio version. On Blackmagic's webpage about codecs supported in DR, for Windows it says only "8-bit OS-supported profiles. More profiles & GPU acceleration in Studio", so I guess it's saying they only support 8 bit for Windows users, which is what I have, unless "more profiles" means 10 bit. For Mac users it says, "Yes, GPU accelerated" for H264/H265, so I'm guessing they'll work on a Mac. I also found this other source, which basically says the studio version of Davinci Resolve won't do any 10-bit files in H264, citing certain GPUs.www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/what-h-264-and-h-265-hardware-decoding-is-supported-in-davinci-resolve-studio-2122/ If I was sure I knew how to make the video files work, I'd buy the studio version, same with a new computer, because the GH6 is that good, worth the investment. I'm just a novice, though, still basically a beginner when it comes to all this, so I don't know. As for using proxies, I tried to understand that but didn't get too far, although I might be able to learn it in the future. I also tried to do some transcoding using HandBrake and Shutter Encoder with very limited success. In any case, I just wanted the MOV files because of the higher frame rates like 120fps, but MP4 is fine. I did try ProRes recording, but those files are just too huge. I'm not gonna be color grading or anything. I am in need of a new computer, so I might do that at some point if I can afford it. I think in another video you said you have a MacBook and you don't use Davinci Resolve, that you use Final Cut Pro. Apparently those MacBook Pros would be good for these kind of files, but again, I'm not sure. Besides, they're expensive. I'll keep watching your channel, and thanks again for your help and information. It's all a little overwhelming for a dude who just wants to post a few RU-vid videos.

No problem at all. I am not a Resolve Studio (paid) or Windows user, so probably not the best to answer in much more detail. But I think transcoding the files is the only way to go with some file types, which I appreciate is far from ideal. I am predominantly a Premiere Pro user but I do also use Final Cut X for editing. I am using an M1 Max Macbook Pro and it's great for editing, a little pricey but editing is how I make some of my income, so it's a necessity in keeping my workflow and turnaround times quick. The files from the GH6 are big and a lot of machines will struggle to play them back nicely. ProRes, although massive, can be useful in just playing back files when in the editing stage. The easiest way to work with it is to just get a decent 2TB SSD drive and record and edit from it. Proxies are just like low-resolution versions of your original files that you generate to make editing quicker and playback faster. Then when you export it just uses the original files. Again, I appreciate this is an extra step but it can save a lot of time in some cases. I haven't used this editor but I hear good things about it and it has a free version, could be worth looking into - www.capcut.com/ Thanks for watching and I hope you manage to get up and running with editing your videos!

Hi Steven, I want to shoot slow mo real estate video in 4K 60fps however cannot find the best recording format that allows this (without CFexpress card)? The variable frame rate option allowed me to change to 50fps, 54fps & 75fps but not 60fps. Also when adjusting VFR is it possible to keep AF Mode on to the Full Area Focus Mode?

@stevelitton 2 года назад
Hi, what's your base frame rate? if you are looking to shoot in 60fps, I would assume your base frame rate would be 30fps? In which case you will want to switch the camera into NTSC rather than PAL and that will give you a few 60fps options without having to use VFR. This video should help - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-An05tRN3tvs.html If you can stay out of the VFR modes it will give you more options in terms of autofocus. Hope that helps.

Do you have a suggestion for an external battery option for the GH-6 ?

I have been looking into v mount battery solutions but in the meantime I am using the DCC17 dummy battery with mains power where possible or failing that I am using a power bank to top up the battery for longer shoots.
