Workshop clamp test: Trying to Break a Piher quick clamp - the Clampoff!

I recently got the very privileged chance to take a look a range of clamps, some currently not available here in the UK. I had never come across Piher clamps before, and only heard of them by chance a few months back.
Before wanting to "associate" for want of a better expression, I wanted to take a look at some of their range and see actually for myself, without all the hype how good I thought they were.
So first things first, they say they're strong - Obviously that was taken as a challenge to see how easy it was to break one.

Nice test, thanks! I love that the clamps "give up" before they break. Good design in my humble opinion... I had a lot of the cheap "china" clamps explode in my hands. So I've moved to Irwin Quick-Grip Xtreme (250kg) and Wolfcraft EHZ Pro (120kg, I think this is the one you won't name ;-). To be honest I bought the Wolfcraft because of the significantly lower price for the long ones. But they are by far my favourite in everyday use. The ability to open them a bit more from the grip (as you demonstrate beautifully) alone makes them "true one-hand". And the Irwin requires removing a screw to convert them. Of course the Irwins are stronger - so when you need that extra pressure, I guess you have to live with the design. By the way I don't think the Pihers are available here (Denmark, EU) - at least I never saw them...

Hi +Anders Frederiksen , thanks for commenting! You're right, Piher don't seem to have a distributer in Denmark (but in Northern Germany), I can't remember the Model of the "other clamps" - although I had three at the time of this video - 2 have now been binned, as they stopped clamping even without pressure - the Piher one from this video, are - and were at the time of filming an out of date model, these have been updated, and are holding up beautifully - even with my rough handling. I'm genuinely a true convert, and all the piher products I have are in constant use, and well built. I've not used the Irwin quick-grip Xtremes personally, but i have managed to break (over time) several of their F-Clamps, these have now been replaced with a couple of piers other models, which are also very good (the clamp E, and the maxi-press). well worth the investments!

+Richard “BrainFizz” Morley, It's great to find brands you can trust! Eventually those will eventually also get to Denmark! :-D By the way, I hope the Wolfcrafts "one hand step opening" is not patented and that the other brands start copying it soon... ;-) Cheers, Anders PS: Wow, I'm surprised that you can break a "F-clamp"; it seems they are all metal, "classic clamps": www.irwin.com.au/tools/clamps/pro-f-clamp-medium ? I never noticed the brands - and can't remember any of them breaking... ;-)

My Erwins are quivering on their rack. An interesting comparison and I'm intrigued to see what the clamps you 'teased' us about are like.... Cheers Bob

Mine are too Bob! I have 2 Irwin F - clamps sitting on the rack next to one of the Piher Maxi-press clamps... which are rated to 9000N (900Kg). I watch them get cranked to over 8 30, one handed.

I don't want to be a clamp at your place Richard! I do own some of the green ones by myself. Pretty sturdy with the advantage of the soft pads. The downside is the low capacity, regarding the clamping width. I actually bought a couple of cheap clamps before, but when they break, it's most of the time the handle, or the pivot point of the handle, so you can only take them apart and use the metal bar for other things. Don't feel sorry, I know the feeling if I want to break something, but also the sadness afterwards. Greetings from Good Old Germany Peter

LOL! I know what you mean about the capacity, they are available in longer sizes though. I don't want to sound like the poster boy for Piher, being objective and unbiased is my main aim here. But I am currently unable to fault these clamps. I have a few of the Maxi-press clamps too, and am currently trying to get them to yield or slip bending 4 X2's so watch out for one with those.

So hoping something was going to go, was partly expecting the next video to be reglazing a roof! Both of those clamps look good imho.

I really got quite excited at the possibility of breaking on with a clamp, but as I was straining to put more and more pressure on it, I did wonder if it was actually a good idea or not! I was impressed too, and later found out that the Piher Clamp I used has been updated and improved, so watch this space! :-)

Thanks for watching! I wonder if you were secretly nervous to see which one broke? :-) I am yet to break it, but have not given up! Someone somewhere must be able to think of a way to break it!!! Looking forward to seeing you and the team in Coventry, please don't be mean if I do break one ;-)
