In this episode, we fit a patch to the wing of this double bass. For some reason, this had been thinned out a little and poorly repaired, so the best option is to put a patch to increase its thickness.
Firstly Dan traces around the area that we want to patch and then uses this to transfer to the wood we want to use. Then we very roughly fit the patch to know it is the right size and shape. He then fits some blocks that will hold the new wood in place precisely during the fitting. These blocks are clamped in place or are fixed with a drop of glue so that they can be easily removed after the patch is fitted. The next step is to fit some parcel tape to the area for patching; this tape protects the wood from the oil paint that is used to fit.
We use yellow paint because it shows up well during the fitting, and also, if some of the colour were to get onto the wood, it does not stain it. The paint fitting works because any high spots on the new wood will get paint on them; these areas are then planned down until colour shows up everywhere you put the patch.
Once the patch is fitted, we use hide glue to fix the new wood to the old. Then, the following day, after the glue is well dried, we plane the new wood down until it blends into the area. Anywhere that you patch around a soundhole requires careful blending to keep a nice line around the soundhole. Then, we sand down the wood to give a nice smooth finish.
