Few interesting facts about this video... 1.\ When you eat with your hands the probability of burning your tongue or lips is minimum. 2.\ There are a lot of nerves which converge on your finger tips and palm. Means that your taste buds and brain already gets a signal about the texture, hardness, crispiness, softness and sometimes spiciness of the food that is just about to enter your mouth. Assumption here is you eat slowly which is eventually good for digestion too. 3.\ The narrow side of the banana leaf is always reserved for pickles and starters whose sole purpose is just to stimulate and tickle your taste buds from time to time. 4.\ The hot rasam when served on a banana leaf creates a unique appetizing aroma which you will never experience on a steel or a ceramic plate. 5.\ Finally after the meal, the banana leaf is either fed to the cows or buffaloes in the backyard or are dumped into a pit in the backyard. Naturally bio degradable with no toxic waste to pollute the nature. Subtle way of giving it back to the nature that takes care of us. 6.\ Traditionally you sit on the floor while having meal on a banana leaf. Thats because it gently forces the movement of your stomach muscles and intestines as you lean forward and back to eat from the banana leaf. So waist up your body is in total control of the food that you consume. Our ancestors were a lot more concious about nature and a lot wiser for sure!

-- Banana leaves are rich in polyphenols ( natural antioxidant ), they reduce diseases, aging speed, increase immunity, etc. When hot food comes on contact with leaves, the properties are absorbed by food. -- They have antibacterial properties, which kill bacteria present in food. -- They have a wax like coating, which stop dust build up on leaves. -- 0 waste, can feed to animals after use. -- No leftover chemical's from soap.

Plus, when hot food is served on banana leaf, it helps release the anti oxidents (polyphenol - good for diabetes, cancer, neuro degenrative and cardiovascular diseases) into the food

I am not sure what you wanted to say ? Naan is bread,, for you the concept of bread is square loafs packed in plastic bags, but technically anything made by biding of any grounded grain flour either cooked or baked is called Bread, , only difference between Naan and regular Bread is yeast fermentation but some parts of our country and Pakistan Bangladesh do put yeast and semi ferment naan dough. I am sure you have confusion when westerns call gravy a sauce as for you sauce is only processed red Tomato purée in a bottle.

Yes Korbin, the banana leaves are thrown away after people eat on it. 90% of India usually serve food on biodegradable plates and this has been going on for centuries. No worries, West is working on it in their universities and gonna claim/patent it as some wild innovation in a few years.

I am of Malayalee descent living in the US. We get our banana leaves for Onam from Mexican stores. I have lived in 3 continents, love food from around the world and a meat lover but hands down Onam Sadya is my most favorite meal. I could become a vegetarian if someone could cook 21 curries everyday 😂. My family doesn’t add too much chilies. We use lots of various spices but heat spice is moderate. All flavors matter!! I can’t handle heat spicy burning food. Even our achars, you taste more tang than heat, you are even able to get a hint of the future sweetness of the unripe fruit that the Achar is made from …if you can picture that. Korbin would enjoy my mom’s cooking.

Rick / Korbin - buttermilk with curry leaves can be used as a plain drink or mixed with rice. This is prevalent in south india where it acts as a cooler and helps the stomach settle down. It is the last item on the menu. Along with curry leaves, there are versions of it with Fenugreek seeds and tempered/tadka with mustard seeds.

Actually indian gooseberry (Amla) is a superfood with the highest antioxidant content of any foods. It has an antioxidant content 125 times that of blueberries as per a scientific study which measured antioxidant content of over 13000 foods. So it should help extend lifespan (I think that is what the server was trying to say in his not so-good-English, when he said “eat this, life is short” Meaning since our life is short, we should eat this to improve it or extend it”

Banana leaves adds flavour, nutrition and antioxidants to food placed on it. After having a meal on a banana leaf it should be folded towards our side on a normal or a good occasion as a sense of celebration . If the occasion is a funeral then it should be folded away from our side as a sense of mourning. Thrown banana leaves and leftover foods are fed to cows which provide them with good nutrition and in turn they produce good quality and good quantity milk. Hence not only there is no wastage but it also helps to cut costs from buying cattle feeds.

It’s a perfect eco system when you serve in banana leaves and use your hands to eat (tasting the food while enjoying the texture and it’s more hygienic then eating on a plate with spoons or fork). After you finish eating and when you throw the banana leaf, it becomes a natural organic good for cows and goats that gaze on the streets. All the rich traditions are almost dead in India now due to the greedy minded and selfish (majority of the) population (and thankfully not everyone is greedy or selfish ) 🙏🏻🙏🏻 And when you eat in banana leaf, you get an added unique flavor. whenever I visit India for vacation? I always request my dad to serve hot idli with ghee on banana leaf and it tastes super delicious (and my mouth is watering when I type this). 😋😋 And you cannot use fork or spoon to eat in a banana leaf. 😂 The first dish you both were trying to pronounce is adaprathaman. The yellow color (tortilla kind of dish) is sweet poli and served with semiya payasam (vermicelli kheer). Towards the end, the first thing he drank was rasam (which you thought is pani like pani puri). And butter milk with curry leaves has amazing flavor. They would add salt also in the butter milk. You can drink it as is while chewing the whole curry leaves (I am used to it and love it) or you can mix with rice and eat it. As he said, ending the meal with ginger pickle helps in faster digestion after such a heavy meal. This is famously called Onam Sadya and Onam or Thiruvonam ( Thiru + Onam) is the biggest and famous festivals mainly for Keralites. I am surprised that the guy in the video is able to handle so much heat (spice) 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻

I don't know why they have to show messy eating with hands. Even with hand, one can eat really neat. Even neater than what people eat with spoon.

Yes we can get banana leaves in most Mexican stotes because they make Thamales in it. Then chilly, potatoes, pineapple, yuca/tapioca it is all mexican and introduced into indian cuisine by Portuguese so there is many similarities. Especially in kerala and goa culture n food

There is no similarities in kerala and goa food at all. A lot of goanenese food is similar to maharashtrian food but no similarities whatsoever with South food other than the short grain rice

Portugal and Spain are 2 different countries right? Portugal never colonised Mexico, so Mexican food has hardly any similarity to Portuguese and their colonial cuisines.
