As an entomologist, I'm convinced this podcast is just a way for Maya to slowly but surely get Connor to love bugs. And I couldn't be happier for it

If you don't mind me asking, what specific work do you do? I want to be an entomologist, but I'm worried about job opportunities. Thank you :))
@attabooii
@attabooii 8 дней назад
@@wefhyuewif I'm currently a phd student studying the phylogenetics and taxonomy of parasitic wasps (specifically in regards to island biogeography on Hawaii or the Galapgos). But there's tons of stuff you can do! There's forensic entomology, museum work, forestry service, agricultural pest management (that's probably the biggest field), urban pest management, medical/veterinary entomology, conservation, ecology, animal behavior, genetics. There's tons to do! We often even joke in the entomology department is that the difference between an entomology major and biology major is that an ent major is guaranteed a job 💀. Regardless of how true that actually is, there are many job opportunities for entomology! Though I will say, having a background in research is almost a must for Entomology. Which is why most people have at least a masters in entomology and phds are also extremely common in the field

My mom was a marine biologist who worked primarily with plankton and other small critters in oceans. She and her OECD colleagues knew how bad the climate was 25-30 years ago, because the lil critters, in particular in the Northern polar circle couldn't find food because of the warmer water, so the fish were less fatty which meant that polar bears couldn't find the calories they needed. This in turn is why the polar bears have been disappearing/dying off. At least back then they could see this being one of the main reasons for it.
@DUKE_of_RAMBLE
@DUKE_of_RAMBLE 20 дней назад
That's around the time they tried to rebrand Climate Change to Climate Crisis. Which didn't stick and seemed to have _pushed_ people away instead, as they felt it was "silly" now. Alas, "crisis" was/is an apt label. 🫤

Just to clarify, the image at 11:35 is not a Giant Pangolin (Smutsia gigantea) but the extinct Giant Asian Pangolin (Manis paleojavanica) which was much bigger than any pangolin alive today. Although the figures for the size and weight Connor gave are correct for the Giant Pangolin, it's just the image that is inaccurate. Love the pod btw!

I love the podcast! Suggestion for the scoring system - if the first person gets it right, they get 2 points, if they get it wrong, they get -1 point, and the second person to guess if the first person is wrong can get 1 point if right and no penalty if wrong. That’s how the scoring system for many different trivia bowls works
