On June 20, 2017, The World Affairs Council-Washington, DC hosted a foreign policy panel series event featuring panelists Dr. Jeffrey Mankoff (Center of Strategic & International Studies), Dr. William Pomeranz (Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies of the Woodrow Wilson Center), Hannah Thoburn (Hudson Institute), and moderator Anna Gawel (The Washington Diplomat) to explore Russia's history and the country’s motivations.
Since the end of the Cold War and the dissolution of the USSR, the Russian Federation, its successor, has struggled to redefine itself in the post-Cold war era. This has often brought Russia into contention with the United States. Despite a “reset” of relations in 2009, the two countries have remained adversarial, facing each other on opposite sides of multiple international issues such as the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine, as well as the expansion of NATO. Accusations of interfering in domestic affairs have been made by both sides. What does the U.S. need to understand about Russia? What motivates Russia’s policy objectives? What about Russia’s history can help inform the present?
