Hou Yifan is unbelievable. She dominated women’s chess and also went to college full time, while doing other stuff, then went to Oxford, then became the youngest ever professor at Shenzhen University, deciding to keep chess as a “hobby.” What’s next?!
@@theblaze2294 in 2012, when Hou Yi Fan was 16, she played Judit (at her peak 2 yrs before retirement) and Hou Yi Fan won. The match was later called "Passing the Torch". It was the first time Judit had lost a classical match to another woman in 27 years. If Yi Fan kept her focus on chess, she wouldve definitely gone further. However, it seems Judit's torch will have to be returned.
@@thomasmineo I respectfully disagree, there is nothing special happening on their cams, and it would certainly be unreasonable to watch the video only because of their cams which show almost no emotion
That is why this man is the world Champion. Personally, I rate him as the greatest ever. Why? Not just the strength of his Chess but the continued growth of his Character in promoting this beautiful and complex game. Very few have been such fine ambassadors for the game and maintained such playing strength. It is a testament to him that he has maintained such brilliance with humble fortitude. Perhaps Tal's style and persona eclipses Magnus.
If you can be one of the top 100 chessplayers and be in Oxford at the same time, that is simply unbelievable. She would have made more money with a RU-vid chess channel though.
Hou Yifan is such a brilliant player though. She sees so clearly, her thinking is crystal. She seemed hesitant against Magnus which always seems to be the fatal flaw of the female players (except of course Judit). Can't wait to see what happens if/when she takes up chess full time!
@@OriginalPuro Heh. That's what Kasparov thought about Judit Polgar. Then he had to cheat to beat her in the famous "j'adoube" game. Your take is absolutely laughable and I can see why you have free time to troll YT comments if that's what you think of women.
@@troutymctrouttrout3809 but that's the reality what he said .....and reality is often disappointing innit..any women in top 10 are not in a position to beat top 200 men in the world ...or maybe top 400 ...or even more ...
@@OriginalPuro This is just flat out incorrect. Hou Yifan - the person in this video - is in the the top 100. In fact, she's in the top 100 despite the fact that she doesn't even play chess professionally. Unlike Carlsen, she doesn't study chess for 8 hours a day, she just plays it as a hobby. She literally reached 55th best player in the world while treating the game as a hobby. Judit Polgar reached 8th best in the world. You literally could have just looked this up to make sure there were no women in the top 100 before you made that patently false claim, but instead you decided to make yourself look like an idiot.
Everything was planned by Carlsen beforehand from the very beginning. ( He's a bit of an actor,he should go to Holywood! ). Anyway, a perfect game by Carlsen. ( I would have liked to see Ms Hou's face after she played ...h6 and ...Ab7) Anyway She's very talented as well. Regards.
Ah yes Two people with a bit of chess. It's ridiculous how small the board is. They didn't even tried to make the size proportionate to the live cam like... come on 🤦♂️
9.00 She could have killed the pawn with the bishop and if knight takes bishop then rook can take the knight. Someone please explain. And why did magnus play a6 instead of a7?
@@niagra898 wasn't about the fact that there aren't strong enough women to beat magnus carlsen. It's the way your statement showed arrogance "like a woman honestly has a chance"? Do you understand? That's not how you disrespect them that's just patriarchy remember you came from a woman as well
Apparently, because the white horse would've taken the black bishop, then after the trades, they would've both only had rooks and pawns left. But Magnus's rook, after giving one check to the king, would've obliterated her pawns. I'm not sure how exactly because I'm a noob as well, but them being so good, they noticed that was going to happen very early.
Did anyone hear, “they’re older, they focus on other things in life, they don’t work as hard... oops, didn’t mean to say that on live tele” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 do NFL players not think about football 24/7 even if they have a family and social life? Whatta stupid comment, doesn’t matter if the best chess player in the world said it, WE ALL WORK HARD, this is second nature to these people
Hou is currently ranked the 84th best player in the world (among both men and women), but it's worth noting that unlike the vast majority of grandmasters, she doesn't play chess professionally. She has a separate full time job as a university professor and plays chess as a hobby. If she committed to chess full time, she would be able to reach considerably higher.
You are correct, but that doesn't mean she's stopped playing entirely. Despite being one of the most talented players of the game - arguably the most talented female player in history - she chooses not to play chess professionally. Unlike most players at the top level, Hou only plays chess as a hobby in her free time. She still plays when she is able to make time for it, but it's difficult considering she is also a university professor. Considering how well she competes at the top level despite that, it's a shame we don't get to see how high she could reach if she committed to chess professionally - but of course, it's great that she's able to live the life she wants.
@@Ruminations09 That's a fair point. Samuel Reshevsky was a top class GM but was also a full time accountant. He might have been world champion if he had devoted himself fully to the game.
I feel like Magnus is playing below is level to make it more entertaining sometimes. Or give people a fighting chance. Some say it's poor sportsmanship but I don't even know how to feel about it. It's just kind of the way he plays sometimes. Sometimes he is the best chess player to ever live and other times he plays like a new grandmaster. It's weird Though I think it for sure has a lot to do with his emotional state during a game which is true for a lot of people. He was probably pretty upset about the last game and noticed this game was going poorly and then brought out a sledgehammer
The chess board isn't that important as long as it's visible i mean its basically a 64x64 grid. As long as you can see the pieces move the 'clarity' of it doesn't matter imo... coz like you visualise the board in your head anyway so like
Magnus is full time chess player. Hou is a teacher at Shenzhen university. She's not a try hard like all the top dudes, same with Judit Polgar who quit to focus on family ..
@@DreamtOfSleep Maybe you are right. But maybe chess is less popular among women because women overall are less interested in games like chess. Maybe they are less interested in games like chess because their brains are not as good at chess as men. Talking about women as a whole. Not specific women.
I am more in line with Bobby Fischer and his version of Fischer Random..without theory and memorization Carlsen is just a very strong player, a grandmaster..playing Fischer Random, Bobby Fischer would have drubbed Carlsen 6-0 in a 10 game match..no question
Magnus is the best end game player, once all theory and memorization is gone is when Magnus is at his best, so you have no fucking clue what your on about.
Chess is a only game that allows you to play using your intelligence and only this, so you can measure it with a chess. And why there is women's and man's separate chess tournaments? For boxing and running I understand, nobody can deny that man's are stronger and faster.. because man have bigger muscles and harts, lungs and other organs that helping with that. Man's brain is olso bigger then woman's, but feminists are saying there nothing to see here, this only because of general body size diference, but I think evolution make our bodies to safe energy.. it will not spend energy and resources on something it will not use, so man's using this extra size for something, it's not just sitting there doing nothing. Chess is a game about intelligence and because they separating it for women and men it's seams like they know the answer, just to shy or politically correct to tell it, because it's gonna look bad if they say this even if it's true, so for them is just better to deny and live in the lie.
Average man's body is 10% larger than an average woman, that's why their brain is 10% larger. Just like whales have larger brains than humans yet they are dumber than humans. Let's say in 50-70 more year, if women's IQ is still has a stagnant difference of 2-5 points as it is now then I think we can all settle the debate that men in general are smarter than women biologically. Also no literally in every women vs men situation, all guys state it quite evidently that men are smarter and stronger than women. Literally most people don't care about being politically correct.
They separated it to attract more female players; hence why they lowered females' title requirements by a few elo. (WFM, WIM, WGM etc..) But every female can still play open with men like Hou Yifan or Judit and get the "normal title" (FM, IM, GM).
It's like a pyramid, the men's base (# of players) is about 90% of all players, so the top player is likely to be a men. The way for women to have equal standing is dependant on women taking up chess. It is NOT innate ability; this has been proven. If the top player is to be a women, basically more women need to play,
@@CypherOzzie yeah, I don't think are any inherent difference in ability between men and women. I think though women divisions don't help promote chess. In fact it says that they need help when try dont
@@CypherOzzie How has it been proven that there isn't a difference in innate ability between men and women in chess? Has it been scientifically proven?
@@melporean8394 There are 83 men ranked higher then her and she is the best women. No women would ever get close to being World Champ if they didn't have their own division.
hou yifan is a not a full time chess player ,she is a chess teacher in one schools of china which includes chess as a sport, otherwise she will crush magnus
can anyone explain why top level women chess players aren't as barely as good as top level male chess players? I mean i get in sports where men have biological advantage and so on but in chess there's no physical component it's just the brain,so why can almost no women GMs cope with male GMs?
Men are more variable than women intellectually (and I think in other ways too) so there are more men at the top and more men at the bottom. I don't know if that applies to chess (not sure if it's even been studied enough) but it would be consistent with other areas. Women's interests on average tend to differ - at 1 *day* old, boys prefer looking at a mechanical mobile; girls prefer looking at a human face. As far as I have read, this difference persists throughout the lifespan. Men get somewhat more value out of things like chess - the pressure is on you to achieve something big, whereas for women, this is still about starting a family etc. That last one is not total - not every male gets told to become a movie star, not every woman gets told to get married and have children - but there is still this difference in expectations, even if it is more fluid/balanced nowadays. Who does Hou Yifan compare herself to, when she evaluates her life? Is it Carlsen? Her mother? Mother Teresa? Her role models/anchors for comparison are likely to include many women, none of whom have won the world chess championship.
its mostly about the amount of men playing vs the amount of women playing chess, i dont know the exact statistics but i'd have to guess it's around 90% men playing, so there will be a lot more higher level male players. even then, a lot more of the women playing chess won't be playing competitively because, like many sports, society teaches men to be far more competitive than women.
@@danielmeek3997 that doesn't make sense, Magnus became the best in the world not because there are more male chess players, but because it's what he loves and he worked until he reached his goal of being number 1, it doesn't matter if there are less female chess players, all you need is 1 to work as hard as Magnus and achieve what he has, the question is why isn't there even 1 who can come even close?
@@tomatoisnotafruit5670 because Magnus and any other top player is 1 in a million. Not to put their skill down to luck, but you are far more likely to find men who have a brain for chess, and who have the motivation to become great at it, than women who are far fewer and far less competitive in the game currently. Basically the chances for great male players is higher than great female players because theres more of them
@@nubianpwr Their body language was very similar during most of this match - they both look quite engaged and seem to be concentrating on the action. I'm a huge fan of Magnus, but I'm really at a loss here as to why you believe his body language to be indicating boredom, or how you came to the conclusion that he wasn't exercising his enormous brain during the match.
I am also confused how you watch this and conclude that Magus somehow looks bored? His expression through most of the match is almost identical to Hou's - one of intense concentration and contemplation.
