Every now and then, you get to witness a run of cutting-edge performance that defines an era of the sport. Even rarer, is when you see that purple patch unfold in an area that's not in the media spotlight and is renowned for sandbag grading. This past summer, saw Aidan Roberts climb not just a couple of outstanding Lakeland boulder projects, but a whole slew of FAs and repeats up to 8C+/V16 in just a six week period. We're also not talking of lines ignored by the best - they'd already seen attention - they are problems that climb some of the proudest boulder faces in the Lakes and show off the best of British climbing.
This film follows Aidan repeating multiple 8Bs to then establishing first ascents all the way up to 8C and 8C+ with Superpowers and Outliers. Whilst you all know these grades have been climbed before elsewhere, you may not know the context of Aidan and the Lakeland grading - he's not soft and neither are the grades! One of his FAs from Colorado established previously (Railway, 8C) has been tried by some of the world's best boulderers and yet has only had a single repeat by Matt Fultz...
"World Class" also dives into interviews to get the opinions and experiences of two of Aidan's close allies - and also elite boulderers - Dan Varian and Jack Palmieri. Both of them explain the significance of this run of climbing form and provide the perfect contextual backdrop to some stunning climbing footage. If anyone's opinion on British bouldering matters, it's these guys. They've both established and repeated hundreds of Font 8As and above, all over the UK and have watched Aidan progress in his climbing.
For those of you who like tick lists, the FAs in World Class are:
- Superpowers 8C+ (Ladstones)
- Outliers 8C (Trowbarrow)
- Railway 8C (Colorado)
- Flip off at the Opera 8B+/C (Bowderstone)
- Tranquilitas 8B+/C (Kentmere)
- Copperline 8B+ (Coppermines)
- Hathi Junior 8B (Swarthbeck Gill)
- Lady of the Forest 8B (Kentmere)
- Lad powers 8A+ (Ladstones)

"there is always an illusion that world class climbing lies in different countries or continents" - being an old climber who´ve chosen not to travel anymore but rather develop amazing climbs locally, I could not aggree more. It´s not everyday we see a strong boy with such a humble and well educated vision amidst this world of hypeness and virtual social validation. Very well done guys! 👏

One of the top climbing documentaries ever made. Super inspiring as a climber, the message couldn't resonate more, and very insightful for future filmmakers. I stumbled across this while having a peak experience on psilocybin and I my jaw was on the floor the whole time. When a line takes so much, a lifes work of training even, and it all comes together like this, its truly a work of art to witness. Aiden, Dan and Jack all seem like top blokes. 10 stars

Thank you lattice for this great documentary. It’s awesome to see displayed how climbing is always embedded in a philosophy. Very insightful to think on how the best climbing in the world may well be the one we have locally, more so if taken into account the value of our local community, of our friends and history, of the place that for the moment we consider home.

Such a good story and very well told. I like how the video mirrors his modesty by putting his person in perspective of the people around him. I mean it was not a video about Aiden per se but about him as part of the British climbing scene. Dan's thoughts on climbing in your home area made me understand what 'home' means, generally.

Indeed, for me as well, it’s all about the experience of the sport itself, truly amazing and honest vision here. Why go traveling if you can enjoy your life at home, it’s all relative in the end. The environment and future generations will only benefit from it!
@aidentoth9797

dan talking about being content with climbing is so incredibly important. the community is just as, if not more important than sending hard and traveling to "world class destinations". climbing is such a social sport and even tho wherever you go the people are almost always warm and supportive, it can be so difficult to make real connections if you're just running around trying problems you feel like you need to try bc they're classics. i mean im not good enough to even know exactly what this feels like but spending time away from my climbing community makes me appreciate it that much more!!!!
