Just checked the replay info with the Hetzer myself... The SU-5 wasn't firing because he had already spent all his ammo. The 152mm Mortar NM. Mod 1931 only allows for a 12 shell capacity. Which means an arty that was without any remaining ammo did more damage to the Hetzer than anyone else on the enemy team. He went into that fight knowing he was never going to win it. As an arty player who looks down on intentional suicide, he has my salute.

Actually Jingles, when the russian tanks rammed enemy vehicles was usually because the driver died so the tank kept going uncontrollably. The stories about brave soldiers ramming tanks is just propaganda.

The German term "Hetzer" actually means someone who more or less actively pursues someone or something with great haste. It originates from hunting activities. In modern German, it is also used to indicate that someone rushes something. "Nun hetz doch nicht so", for example, meaning "don't rush so much".

another reason for ramming in the t34 was that the throttle and brakes worked in a way that reulted in a runaway tank if the driver was knocked out!

Jingles what do you mean there are no tracers? If you go in top down view and happen to look at the location where enemy artillery is located, you will see their exact location because of the tracer. Not sure if that's what you mean though

The reasons the USSR tank forces got so overwhelmingly wrecked in 1941 (and, often, in 1942, and even in 1943) involved much more than just inadequate fuel and ammo for training (in general, they DID have adequate fuel and ammo for training, but the USSR placed so little value on training that they rarely bothered with more than rudimentary training until later in the war, and even then, not much more than rudimentary), it was that their training, doctrine, and deployment was unbelievably awful, plus the general lack of radios in the tanks (so little communication and coordination) For example, Soviet tankers were all trained to operate buttoned up--in other words, the Commander would never open the hatch and look around--so they had terrible situational awareness and tended to drive straight into ambushes, prepared enemy positions, or even just right past enemy tanks or AT guns without seeing them. Doctrine also included rigid adherence to orders (which were often vague and stupid--like sending a group of tanks in the general direction of the enemy without any support and totally inadequate supply), staying with formations, and more. The USSR deliberately avoided any kind of gunnery training more than rudimentary stuff, and it never did so much as bore-sighting their guns. The reason is because Stalin felt that it would build a culture of professionalism amongst the army (something he feared in general, not just in tankers), which he felt a threat to communism (yes, really. Not making this up). This is a big part of why Soviet tanks were terribly inaccurate at substantial ranges--their guns weren't bore-sighted and they had little gunnery training. Most Soviet commanders--Zhukov among them--ordered their tanks into action with far too little support and far too little buildup of supplies, with little or no intelligence or recon, vague mission briefings, and orders that were either extremely vague or out of touch with reality (like being far too specific, which they were expected to follow regardless of the reality on the ground). Stalin and the Stavka always insisted on immediate counterattacks before Soviet forces were even remotely ready/supplied/supported, and these counterattacks were promptly slaughtered by the efficient combined arms operations and highly skilled veterans of the German army. Amusingly enough, the real commander behind the successful encirclement of the German 6th Army at Stalingrad (which certainly wasn't Zhukov's doing, no matter how much the credit-stealer tried to have everyone believe) managed to succeed because he was actually given time to build up supplies, bring in adequate infantry and artillery support, get decent intel and scouting, and hash out a good plan.

Regarding Soviet tankers ramming the enemy thing. While I won't deny that there were cases where it was done intentionally out of sheer desperation/determination or whatever, there is another thing to keep in mind. From what I recall some of the Soviet tank gearboxes were set up in a way that the brake pedal had to be pressed down if you wanted the tank to stay in place. Let it go and the tank would move. As a result, if a driver got killed during combat, there wouldn't be anyone to apply the brake. As a result, the tank would keep moving froward and you'd get cases where the tank keeps moving even after the entire team has been taken out.

about 4-5k games to get reasonably good? I must be that group that picks it up earlyish. I have about 3600 games right now with around 1100wn8 (I have the is7, leopard 1 is nearly researched, and im working on e100 research right now :D). I started back last years february and played with my friend who introduced me to wot until he gave up on it at about april or so. I ended up taking a break until the past december (2016) and came back to an account with 700 games played with a red wn8 (didn't check what it was :/) I've been no lifeing the game since I came back to it and im actually reasonable decent and my wn8 goes up everyday (unless Im using a tank I really do not like or do well it such as the stock e75 which dropped my wn8 by quite a bit)

Jingles, as an addendum thingy. The t34 controls acted in such a way that when the driver took their foot of the accelerator the tank lurched forward at speed. This is also where many of the stories of Soviet tanks 'ramming' or advancing on the Germans even when damaged/on fire etc. It can be read about in a chapter in the book Blood Red Snow, which is a German Soldiers diary from the Eastern Front.

About soviet tanks ramming other tanks while it may have happened a lot of the cases where a T-34 would ram or attempt a ram would because the driver was dead. The way the controls worked in a T-34 meant that if the driver slumped forward onto the tillers the vehicle would proceed forward and not stop till it hit something. I think this is mention on the Inside the Cheiftains hatch on the T-34-85.

I like this theme, you should do this every so often. I have around 7k games myself, I think I started figuring things out at around 3k-4k games. By then you have to dig your stats out of the hole you dug yourself in, but it's not too bad. The first and last replays showcase players that have serious potential, they are already figuring things out and have good instincts. Props to them.

Exceptionally good video this time!

Quick clarification, Jingles: most of the support and resupply units in soviet formations were attached to corps/armies rather than brigades or divisions to try and cut down on the number of supply vehicles needed (ie, the high command would allocate transport units to brigades/divisions needing them most). So the ratio of supply trucks to active tanks was much lower in Soviet vs German units. In the early days, the Luftwaffe had air superiority and Soviet units were unprepared for the large offensives. Resupply units became quickly wiped out in air raids, and tanks ran out of spares + fuel during the first weeks of fierce, highly fluid engagements. This goes a long way in explaining how one can lose ten thousand tanks in a few weeks.

Well, arty usually takes a while to reload so unless you're getting focused down by multiple arties, your tank tends to last at least a few minutes provided you didn't get your engine deck penetrated or the arty isn't firing AP. A bit of maneuvering helps too, its like dodging torpedos in WoWS. I think you can actually see arty tracers now, I saw one when I was going counter battery quite recently. The problem is that you have to spend a while looking for those tracers and time not spent firing shells at the enemy is time spent not doing damage, and sometimes, the damage that arty do is the thing that determines a victory or loss, especially if your allies can't penetrate an enemy tank's armor and your big HE shells are the only things that can harm them.

I like the idea of some youtuber doing a series on the accomplishments of new players to wot/wow, because even noob players have awesome battles once in a while. Maybe do a critique on their play and give tips to help em improve.

Basil L. Plumley, Sgt Mjr in the Battle of Ia Drang. To serve under Hal Moore would be honour enough, but to be as integral as Sgt Mjr was is nothing short of becoming a legend. 4 combat drops in WW2, another in Korea and then into the jaws of hell itself. There isn't a single person in history that can come close to achieving what he did. He earned his place in the heavens amongst the gods.

Nice to see some lower tiers as well! Have been playing my Panzer V/IV a lot lately to get 3 gun marks on it so most of these guys look familiar :) - Holy moly that BT-7 rotating the turret when zoomed is making me nauseous XD

Gun accuracy is what made scouts less of a threat to arty. Speed and agility allowed scouts to avoid a lot of fire a couple years back. It's infinitely more difficult to penetrate behind the enemy front like than it used to be.

you forgot to mention, jingles, that soviet tanks did not have the same brakes and accelerator pedals that most other tanks did. Many of those rams were the result of the driver being shot up and thus being unable to slow or stop the tank. it wasnt always about being brave or following orders, much of it was just circumstantial.

This video clearly shows the difference between passive Hetzing (hiding beside the truck waiting for Hetzees) and active Hetzing (going out to to look for Hetzees). Very important to know, Jingles! haha

Was it good ? It was ! Great Jingles that you also show the lower Tiers ! ! ! Lots are playing low Tiers, it is a lot of fun ! ! ! I think lots of players are (pretty) low Tiers, beginners obviously, but also the guys that have to earn their money (upgrades and so on) slowly, with no (or hardly) gold. (like me, though having just few Tier 7 and 6) !

Jingles, you can see artillery tracer or other tracers. I believe the rules are you have to be aiming within something like 10 to 20 degrees of the direction of the tank firing the round and you only see the tracer within your visibility range or in artillery overhead view, standard or the Battle Assistance angled view. I was playing artillery and almost got killed a counter battery shot and had to call it out to other friendly arty so they'd know to relocated after firing.

And this is why I've hung up my tankers helmet for this game. The best I ever got for my 60 day Win8 was 50%. Towards the end I could do no better than 46%. After 20k+ games, it was time to retire. My hats off to the new players who may become stars of the game. I will continue to watch your program sir, but today just reminds me of why I needed to retire. It went from being a fun challenge, to a bath in frustration for me. I will miss playing.

Jingles, the second reason for soviet tankers ramming their enemies is because the drivers were dead. Driving system is set up (at least in T-34, but probably in BT series too) so that you stop the tank by pulling the leaver, and the tank goes forward by itself when no one is pulling anything. And you can't pull anything when you are dead. At least I hope so.

That Hetzer did really good. :)

One other reason for the ramming stories is that for example a T-34's transmission system if you're not depressing the clutch, it will move forward by itself even if the driver dies.
