Another thing on Nahkimov - it's invulnerable to fighters. Let me explain - fighters have been programmed to attack only planes that still have ordinance and not waste ammunition on planes that do not pose a threat. This works fine for most aircraft carriers. But russians ... do you see the problem? The Russians may ignore the fighters, because even if the fighters start attacking, the Soviet carrier will drop its payload and the fighter planes will say, "These planes are not a threat. Looking for another target". This is stupid because a Soviet aircraft carrier can drop a target, even with fighter cover, without losing any aircraft. Your aircraft carrier IS NOT ABLE TO PROTECT YOU. Welcome to world of warships

Nakhimov and to a similar extent Chkalov and Pobeda get colossal immunity periods to AA damage. I've happily deplaned multiple FDR's. It's almost impossible vs Nakhimov, even if the player is disabled and *tries* throwing aircraft away...

@@SteelxWolf not judging by what people complain about still. Which is being spotted, terrible CV players on their own teams, and damage. They did about as much damage with the unicum players, they did a hell of a lot *More* spotting, including torpedoes, and few CV players were even "okay" above tier 5.

I think Helena was in 2018, after the split happened. It's not even the date but the fact that Helena was by Wargaming's design a mediocre ship from the start (not bad, but not great). You most likely mean the old Cleveland that was an insane firestarter in the old days and most likely the reasons why the split happened the way we see it today (with Cleve being pushed to T8, where it is a decent ship at best...and doing PepsiCola a favor by pushing it down to T6 where it can actually shine).

My biggest gripe about subs is that the damage control usage to clear a ping leaves you so vulnerable, not least because the damage control cool down is much longer than that of the sonar ping. The sub just pings you again or you get set on fire or flooded by something else. Puts far too much pressure on one consumable. I have seen a vid of someone from WG saying "we know people hate subs, but what can we do?" So what do they do, fully release them anyway. They do not fix the many existing problems or bugs whilst introducing even more problems and create even more imbalance. That's before things like the matchmaker not even attempting to create even matches so you get constant roll overs. The latest waterline also talks about implementing cross server matches for new player games (likely to be expanded in the future for higher tiers), which is clearly due to a lack of new players. They are so greedy they just don't get that they are most of the problem and I doubt they ever will. Upgrading my PC soon as I cannot see me playing this game into 2023.

Exactly my beef with subs. Using Damage Con to mitigate a sonar ping is the dumbest thing that Wargaming have ever put into the game. Why is it so hard for them to just add another consumable to counter a sonar lock. I need a damage con to actually heal bloody damage. Not to waste it on countering a stupid sub.

@@jimr5703 Yes so true. They also said that Superships would only be available for those who had ground the lines and had three tier 10 ships. 3 months later they are announcing that they are flogging Superships to any whale that can afford it. Nothing surprises me anymore.

I hear you regarding the Conde from CB, but if it were nerfed (burst mode removed) you'd feel the same way about the annapolis. It actually has 3 salvos instead of two like the Conde. The truth is, all the T11 shouldn't be allowed in T10 CB, AND they need to call them what they are: T11.

Submarines have totally changed my opinion of how much fun it is to play WoWS. Now I mostly just play Co-op to avoid them for the most part. Random is NOT fun anymore.

Im a new player to WoWs, around 400 battles, i stick mostly to tier VI crusiers and when i see that the ship have to drop the depth charges manualy on top of the sub instead of having a plane i basically assume i have no protection against subs. Trying to chase them is pointless cause they are fast like motorboats and if i leave my cover to depth charge them im being nuked by enemy team and even if i sacrafice and hit them with all my depth charges (I was palying huanghe AA and anti sub build, 4 drops, 3 bombs in payload, once i scored 9 hits and the sub was still floating) its not guaranteed u will sink it. Having hydro is also pointless to fight them because 2km spot range is ridicoulous. Like... I can spot little torps from 3km away but cant spot thick fat underwater metal trashcan from the same distance?

I still remember when the FDR was in testing. Being in my Venezia, seeing a squad of rocket planes get to me, shoot me way before my AA even activates, then HALVES MY HEALTH. God that thing is nuts

It is maybe just me, but nowadays I don't think that Smolensk is that "bad". They are fairy rare, and most of the time they are not anymore annyoing than a Kitakaze or F.Sherman.

I kinda agree, it's just a better HE spammer, it's like smolensk is a bullet wound and the other HE spammers are a stab wound, they both suck but one may be worse than the other

Same for me. Smolensk is annoying to play against, but it doesn't have that much battle Impact. I hate fighting Smalands way more. It has the tools to deal with any class, is an annoying HE spammer and doesn't even have a citadel in the first place.

@@anidiot2818 totally Smaland is a real threat; it counters almost everything. It can shred aircraft too, it has almost everything and has one of the best AA. That's like almost unfair. You need a long range DD with high velocity to trade with her but that's about it.

In my opinion, a huge problem with subs, while trying to avoid being hit by torpedoes, you are forced to maneuver your ship in a direction that will get you blapped by any other surface ship in range. CV's have no counter play to Subs. So, like the typical person who is willing to play this class of ship (while it is broken), will go straight for the CV knowing this... People complain about CV's in general, however AA is more effective than given credit for with the newer AA DDs. A Holland and a few other high tier tech line DDs will shred a squadron very quickly by themselves. Having said all that, FDR is broken for sure and it does deserve it's place on your list. One major complaint with WG is, they appear not to care about these problems. They won't listen to player feedback and make changes accordingly. They have received my last dollar last year and After my premium time expires, I will probably just stop playing this game as much sometime in 2023. Been playing almost 7 years. Starting to feel like I am in an abusive relationship... I love the game, I hate the company. Time to move on suppose.

Ah yes, Smolensk... Never forget, Smolensk was considered toxic low-skill gameplay and overpopulated the matches, so she got three different mechanic changes to screw it over and a nerf to her armour scheme to make her midsection overmatchable by the heavier cruisers. And then people discovered that Thunderer, released at the same time, was just as much a lazy toxic ship that overpopulated the queue, so it got a nerf of its range to "only" 21 km. That's it.

By putting it at 21km you bring it into range of basically all equivalent teir BBs is the thing. And it's not the best armoured among its peers. It removed its ability to just sit on the map border and has to join the rest of the BBs in open water behind the cover.

@@Talshere88 It's a BB. It has enough armour to bounce most BBs when angled. The only BBs that overmatch it and had issues matching 24 km range (without using spotter plane) are Hannover and Incomparable. Indeed, the only T10 BBs that now could reach it and couldn't before are the Germans, as Conq matched the range, Montana, Repu and Yamato exceed the range. Colombo still falls short. And for any BB that cannot overmatch, shooting a BB with cruiser levels of rudder shift at 21 km is still often just a wasted shot, as the amount of damage is limited and the Thunderer will just bounce most shots by angling. Basically throws all impact out the window trying to hit a dodgy BB with BB grade armour, at least T9 BB grade hp pool and an improved repair party that can go dark if it really needs to. Fact is, range was the least issue with the ship. In good hands Smolensk nerfs actually matter, Thunderer "nerfs" don't, because a good Thunderer player knows that their ship is sturdy and stealthy enough to be able to play at something like 15 km and nail most T10 cruisers with overmatch...

For mid-tier players, Kamikaze, and Giulio Cesare, would be good adds to this list. A lot of Giulio and Kamikaze players have an insane number of games in these ships and use them as exploit or farming vessels. Check the stats on them. Giulio::1.3MM battles, 57% WR. Kamkaze: 2 MM + battles, 57% WR.

Jean Bart. This is by far my most hated ship in the game. There's NOTHING you can do if the damn thing decides to sit bow in while shooting ALL guns (which are deadly and have a reload booster because french bias doesn't exist, right?) and being immune to any shell under 457mm

Your main turret breaks quite easily, especially if you're bow in. So even without overmatch you can weaken them significantly. They burn pretty well too, not like German BBs but still.

The limited time I play WOWS anymore, the only ships that I hate are CVs and Subs. Pretty much anything else can be dealt with.

I personally love subs, and I fall in between the two groups pointed out by Mountbatten. So, if you find me in game, I can survive, but most times I don't do too much damage.

I like the fact that the Kearsarge, you know the half aircraft carrier and half battleship doesn't get anything to deal with subs. Like yeah they get their tiny tims but no asw planes or anything like Really?

@@Straswa All dutch tech-tree line cruisers do not have ANY defences against submarines, even their airstrike cannot hit them. Only chance to sink them is immediately fire at them when they are at surface.

the fact the Russian carriers unlike regular carriers is that they can return to the ship controls when the planes attack an enemy. so they can deploy another attack when your strike aircraft and skip bombers drop their bombs. having played them up to tier 8, i can say the are really broken. i seen a thunderer on my team a while back when they first came out, thunder and the enemy nahkimov where the only two ships left in the match. down to the wire. both ships were separated by an island in the center of the map. the thunderer was at full health and the cv was at 80%. in less then 1 minute and 43 seconds the nahkimov completely destroyed the thunderer from full health to dead. it blew not only our minds but the enemy teams as well. russian CVs with the rocket assisted takeoff makes all Russian cvs more dangerous at close range which is a powerful advantage unique to them and their statistics.

What I don't understand is why the quintessential submarine hunting CVs don't have any way of hunting them, no depth charges or sonar buoys... historically planes were the nightmare of u-boats.

As far as CVs or subs being worse, I think it depends on the situation and what class you play. I play a lot of DDs and CVs make them super unfun to play. I will add that sub's at least have to take a risk to do damage, there is a chance to find it and kill it. CVs get to hide the whole match and do damage with impunity.

The trouble is, when you go chasing after that sub in your DD or Cruiser. To drop depth charges on him. It usually ends up taking you out of position and into the fire of other enemy guns.

Less experienced player here, so forgive me if I seem uninformed on higher tier actions, but can't you just see where the bombers spawn from and track the CV that way?

​@@jeremygrimes9006yes, but getting within spotting range is difficult to do and only half of the battle. the entire time you are chasing the cv down, he will be dropping strikes on you, which you either must dodge (lmao) or tank. on top of that you need to shoot and kill the cv, which is super annoying to do. automatic dcp with a 60s duration, armored decks and trolly citadels mean cvs can be tankier than battleships. and this is assuming a 1v1. most of the time you would have to get through the ships in your way to think about shooting at the cv. there is zero counterplay - you can't dodge, because planes are more maneuverable. you can't avoid him, because he decides who he is striking. you can't stop his strikes, because aa fire doesn't do enough damage to shoot down his planes. you can't deplane him, because he has magical plane building factories. you can't charge him down either because his team is in the way and cvs hit 30 knots, meaning they are on equal speed with all bbs and ca/cls at higher tiers, apart from a 1-2 knot difference. dds can catch up very well except the stealthiness of dds is completely removed by plane spotting and dodging isn't an option even with the increased maneuverability of dds. add on top of this that strikes do lots of damage and break your aa (permanently, mind you) while the planes can be 3d printed makes it a very unfair and incredibly unfun class to fight.

Conde, they simply need to make a localised lockout on the reload booster when the F mode is used, so they are seperate choices that can't be used in combination. I'd put USA and Eagle top, simply for their ability to spot the entire map within seconds of the game starting. As a DD main, I'm more annoyed at being perma-spotted by CVs than I am by having to dodge CV attacks (as much as I despise that too). I'd also add ships no longer in game. I'm lucky to have many of them, including the main culprits (Smolensk, Smaland, Thunderer) but what are new players meant to do when they face these ships and the game says 'tough, you will never have them'? I'm fine with things being very time consuming to get, but I think it's a real kick in the face to attracting new players when some of the most OP ships they face will literally never be available to them.

Super CVs cant spot the entire map that fast, they have the regular T10 planes for a couple minutes before the jets come online, the spotting isn’t that much better than T10 carriers, it’s the ridiculous damage and a complete inability to react to the jets that’s the problem. Sussy torps do obscene damage per drop and this is AFTER wg nerfed it several times.

The biggest issue with Subs is that they do not promote TEAM play. they are a single player solo game style and their spotting, you have no defence (in a DD for example) constantly spotted by what and from where (if it don't ping and stays at periscope) so you can't attack, if you do your dead. getting spotted by a sub in any other class and your like where is it and by scanning for it your losing your situational awareness. It is a hard enough skill to get the team to maintain especially those without an operational background let alone if they totally lose it due to the sub.

I'm surprised Thunderer wasn't on here. Feel like you were the number one person advocating how broken that ship was during a time everyone was like "It's just really good not OP". I still hate dealing with that thing. The range nerfs to it helped with the problem sure but just like with Smolensk: It's one of the most annoying surface ships to deal with to this day.

Wholeheartedly agree. Though not being very good at subs myself, if I manage to find an isolated BB (or indeed a Dutch cruiser), timing your dive, simply pinging them a single time to make them burn their damage repair and the party is on. Playing the Dutcha lot - it's the line I started with - subs are excrutiatingly frustrating. Dutch CCs need to get close and tug in behind island cover to make their guns and the airstrike useful. That already meant getting into DD range and staying on your toes against torpedo runs, but subs ruin that play considerably. So best is to team up with a CC or DD with you managing the triple A and the other guy/gal taking care of subs. Maybe that's the thing we all need to do by the way: teaming up and really coordinating a division. Pinging just isn't going to cut it anymore.

I'd agree with that list, Subs homing torps are still BS despite the nerf. I remember it used to be Wooster that was farming/spamming everyone before Smolensk. Also it depends what ship I'm playing as to what is annoying, I would say 80% of the time I play Jean Bart they match me against my nemesis Musashi and it's not really a fair fight as most times it's bow on brawls. I'll lose against those big guns and my shells do no damage and force me to switch to HE as they just outheal it while their AP destroys me, Have to really play strategically and try and flank to get those juicy citadels. Thunderer can also be a pain in the butt for a lot of ships out there to play against.

Don't forget... both the Musashi and Jean Bart are pretty much helpless against a sub. Since they can only call planes 5km away from themselves. Musashi more so than Jean Bart, since at least the Jean Bart is maneuverable and fast.

@@paulrasmussen8953 being smart is subjective to interpretation in this regard. The original PR dockyard wasn't smart at all and they fixed it. The fact they had scandals prompting eu law to force list percent change in lootboxes, kong/godzilla scam, Santa crate shortlist scanda, etc. Promising not to introduce subs or guns bigger than yammy, both broken, i could go on. Weegee is smart but also criminal driven profiteering. The "not smart" is the playerbase who continues to funnel them huge amounts of money for digital items, and support their unscrupulous behavior.

Completely with you as regards hating Subs. Historical accuracy has never been a priority in WOW, I realize that. But WOW subs are so wildly crazily different from reality (AND the rest of the game itself) that we might as well just say they have wizards on board.

Am I the only one who remembers when WG said they were never going to add subs to the game? They are way to much of a pain to deal with and against someone who knows what they are doing you can have three or four fairly nicely homing torpedoes coming at you.

For me, it's the Asashio. It has deep water torpedoes which are only detectable right on impact and cause flooding every time they hit along with causing as much damage as a citadel. The torpedoes ignores torpedo protection and hydro doesn't doesn't do much good against them either. To top that all off, the torpedoes have a ludicrous 20km range and the only downside is their fairly long reload time of 112 seconds which still isn't the slowest torpedo reload time and also only having 8 per side. The concealment is also quite low like with most DDs and has a smoke generator along with a torpedo reload booster

Hate is such a strong word. I h8 Subs, I h8 CV's, I h8 the Strasbourg. There are many too h8 certainly more than 5 lol so tough choices. Good job your getting in now before the h8 train starts for the Hampshire. :P

I think a rework for subs, something like a mode like Metal Gear Solid could make subs an interesting class. I think the current game doesn't translate the role of subs well as they are modeled on the U.S.N. subs; surface craft that can submerge for short periods of time. German u-boats were designed differently with features that defined the role of u-boats.

Trying to grind tier 7, the Musashi has really got on my nerves. The presence of a CV means that it would be either kept in check or given spotting so that it can aim better. The worst part about it is that is can see tier 7 ships who stand little chance against it due to it's armor, health, guns and range that it fires at. I had to pray that the Musashi didn't obliterate me in a single salvo when facing it. It's not as bad if you are facing it at tier 8 or 9 or as a DD but it is still an absolute pain for tier 7 players. And to top that, it's range means that it can CV snipe given that it has sight on the enemy CV. The Musashi is also hard to get to thanks to being far behind enemy lines which means you have to either get through them or their AA and by then the Musashi would have either disappeared or have killed you

for the sub part, don t forget that urss ship bb hve limited repair party, that it is a pain to have your turret turn around in bb and some cruiser when trying to aim that asw, and that they are so annoying that even weegee want to put automated asw on CV XD

At.least when Submarine players make a mistake they can be punished via being targeted and destroyed, even if you have to stop what you are doing to kill them. A CV player is only punished if they make repeated repeated bad attacks on heavily heavily AAd targets. Even then, do they lose health? Do they die? Nope. They just take a break and get more planes.

Almost every sub player I run across is an account winrate in the forties, and a sub winrate of fifty five plus. And woe betide you if you run into a real unicum in a sub, or even worse, the player who'se still pulling a forty percent in a sub.

Nakhimov was night and day vs playing Pobeda. Aircraft suddenly gained some actual speed (Serov feels faster than its torpedo bombers), and the immunity periods vs AA is stupid...

20:00 when you're dueling a good sub player, it takes your total focus. And then the other reds shoot you to pieces. I have sunk many subs only to be deleted by a BB I didn't notice because I was distracted. And it is SO BAD when you're uptiered against a sub.

you're absolutely right about #1... any non-braindead submarine player is this game's equivalent of the poison headcrabs in Half-Life 2, in that if you detect them nearby you have to immediately stop anything else you're doing to kill them with extreme prejudice and/or go evasive, often by over-exposing yourself to fire from other enemies.

Conde wouldn't be nearly the cancer it is if it didn't have penetration AND accuracy boosted during burst fire. Annapolis is a good continuation of the Des Moines line, and the burst fire takes forEVER to reload comparatively.

sonar ping doesn't tell you where the sub is. it just gives you an idea of what direction they are.

You have to find the Sonar flash on the water. When a sub pings it also shows on the water right in front of the sub. That’s where you aim to drop your air strike. But a smart sub commander is moving

They have to do something about the homing torpedoes. They are so broken. Perhaps they should be like the burst fire mode and the reload is doubled/tripled.

Another thing about subs is that they shot torpedoes, and torpedo damage is not as healable as others, I think it’s around 10% same as the default healable citadel damage for most ships. So if you play a BB and get hit by sub torps for 30k, you can heal 3k of that, but those torps can cause flooding so you damage con it. And by the time your immunity period is up your being pinged by the sub again, and this repeats until you die.

FDR the big nerf was the torp spread was larger increasing the dispersion. A good CV player with a bad BB player would make this change neglegable

21:52 subs are annoying mosquitos because you can blew them off of the sea..... Well. For me, cvs are annoying mosquitoes that you can't even destroy and you gotta deal with it till the end of the match, dealing damage to the poor selected ship AT WILL and keeping this poor ship spotted for a very long time Am i the only one asking for a general AA buff?

And on the number 1 spot is... Any submarine 🤣 Agreed. As for me, I don't really play subs (except on subsims) since they're paper cup fragile. They're more fragile than the soda cans: destroyers. But I think, maybe, if they make submarines even more fragile than they are now in-game e.g. massively less HP, significantly less torpedo damage but slightly more flooding chance but with significantly less flooding damage it would appeal to many players.

If you are in a BB then the best way to deal with a sub is to charge at it and if you are close his homing torps wont work and eventually he WILL have to surface so then you nuke them

FDR hate is mostly from past reputation as being Nakhimov-level OP. It really was super disruptive for some time after it came out, even when grouped-up it could knock out ships quickly with the repeated strikes from a single squadron. However, from what I have seen lately it looks like it underperforms compared to the other Tier X CVs. Planes get chewed-up rather easily now from AA. Fighters do very little to protect the team from other player's CVs. Rocket attack planes do very low damage. Bombs get dodged. Torpedo spreads are more bark than bite...except perhaps for low health ships that are not in a position to be able to turn. The biggest FDR complaints I see now in-game are from mad players on the FDR team saying it is not contributing enough...that is the sentiment but more colorful words tend to be used. Just as you have noticed, I also have not seen very many FDRs in-game anymore, which I think is more reflective of the CV now being trash. If it really was better than most CVs, it would still get played frequently. Oh how the mighty have fallen...

Back in the days when Smolensk had 19.2km...that single-handedly sealed the decision of Stalingrad for many players. Ofc you can't hit anything substantial at 19.2, but it was SO annoying. Then it was nerfed to 16.0 max and given 16mm which made it near unusable unless you're in a division or in ranked because everybody knows to get rid of you first. But when you're in a smoke division, just saying.

Idk why people have such an issue with subs when destroyers are 10x more op. First time encoutering sub, i got sunk. Everytime after is cake once you learn u just drive towards the ping or away. Destroyers on the other hand can one shot bb, now thats op af

Smolensk really not a problem even back then , I've play the ship and play against the ship , its more the community's big gun mentality doing themselves a dis-service , so using AP would over-pen, then switch to HE , just like the pan Asian CLAA they had pretty much paper thin armor and not much HP, todays play style of not tanking and not taking any is what's hurting the big guns - do not forward, do not group with the forward vanguard to work with them, just back lane camping and shooting from distance then well some countering from distance I shall say warranted , in fact like to see more of them from both torpedoes and mad guns

Submarines: The best counterplay ship for them is Lightning! BTW submarines can be hydro detected at full depth: My Lightning hydro detects them at 2k: Sorry Jingles, Myth Busted!

Subs can be considered OP in that they can spread out rather than shotgun their torps. Why a problem? A ship that dodged first one hasn't time to react to the next ones.

Subs would be better if their speed was actually closer to the submerged speeds in that era. No WWII sub moved at 30+ knots under water. Also, homing torps? Where did that come from?

Subs wouldn't bother me so much if they didn't have homing torps. There torps should shoot like a dd. Shoot at guessed direction of enemy. Ping should only give ship and it's direction.

My biggest problem with subs is they move way to fast dived. They should be 1/4 speed at max depth half at periscope

I agree, but in real life the deeper you are the faster you can travel and remain quiet due to less cavitation at greater depths. Maybe they should add a cavitation mechanic that changes your detect range based on speed and depth

u know... that's completely backwards to actual subs. Periscopes should be easier to spot at higher speeds, plus sound is a lot more detectable at shallow depths.

@@mikep9690 no I don't think it's only true for teardrop shaped subs, it has to do with the speed the propellers can spin. At depth the high pressure prevents water from boiling on the low pressure side of the propeller allowing you to spin the prop faster.
