@@Maty83. Oh, I am not blaming you, you did very well given the situation, and I would have most likely messed it up had it been me, I was just making making note of how lucky that bounce was, as it saved the game.

@@hughmann6108 Definitely so. I ended up screwing up three times in the next hour of play, which definitely told me I needed a break. Mostly torpedobeat fails, but my judgement was worsening. Thing is, I believed the Nevsky was following the Saint Louis and I was screwed if I went out since the St. Louis was within detection range if he had continued on his course

@@wtpiv6041 Iron Duke for so long I haven't trained him up to atleast 10 pts... but Tier 5 is pain nowadays so he's stuck at 6 pts for the moment.

If he didn't have the smoke available he may have kept on running, which is what he should have done anyway. Using the smoke and stopping is why he so nearly lost.

@@jayde1708 Yes but not when he approached the Iowa. It was spotted by hydro and he could have left the cover in smoke and send the torps. But is is easy to tell afterards. It is also easy to say what I have done wrong when I got sunk.

(Disclaimer: I'm writing this long comment not because I think I'm so interesting that people would want to know about my story, but because I am curious to know whether others made similar experiences and feel the same way.) Understanding the game on a strategic level eludes me, to be honest. I first played the game when it was still new, maybe still in Beta and when there were only 2 factions yet. But I am a extreme case of a on-and-off player and despite having tried it first so long ago, I only played about 300 battles so far. I tend to come back to the game, play a few dozen battles, get bored or frustrated with it, quit and come back again 1 or 2 years later. When I say "frustrated", it isn't really that I am rage quitting because things go badly, it is more that I notice that I don't get much out of it, even when things go well. The game just leaves me cold, you could say, even when I'm seeing success. The reason for that is that everything seems really random and chaotic to me. I feel like it is mostly luck and chance and skill doesn't seem to play a big role, compared to other games like this. I played WoT and didn't have that problem there. In that game, I pretty quickly learned how to read a battle. I usually knew how a battle would play out, just from seeing where my team mates were going in the first 20 seconds and where the first enemies were spotted. I don't seem to make any headway like that with WoWS. The maps are just random collections of islands to me and I never know where I should be going and why. I just pick a side at the beginning of the battle, drive there and start shooting stuff when I can. Despite the low number of battles, I get along when it comes to the immediate tactical stuff. From watching Jingles' videos, I know when to expect torpedoes, how to evade them, how to angle and I barely miss a salvo when I shoot, even at long ranges, yet on a strategic level, I have no idea what I'm doing. As I said, everything just feels so random. I do the exact same thing several times and get totally different results every time. So even when I'm successful, I don't feel like I'm making progress, just like I got lucky and won the lottery. That is why I'm always quitting after a week or so. I'm just not learning anything. It feels like trying to play a musical instrument that makes totally different, random sounds every time you play it.

@@TrangleC Divisioning with a competent player with Discord will help you along. There's also probably lots of little tips that will help you along. Such as mapping the zoom in - zoom out toggle key to the spacebar and using that instead of using the scroll wheel to zoom in and out. Or knowing good opening places to go, depending on the ship you're in, the map, the make-up of the teams plus the initial movement of your team. Or typing "50 50 split to each flank?" during the countdown to almost every battle? My Warships username is Lin3. @@TrangleC My friend, I can understand what you mean. İ myself have about 1700 battles played in WoWs over almost two and a half years. Not even close to a significant amount when you look at how long it takes to get actually good at the game. I have a ~50% winrate. I'm as average as average can be. But let me give you a piece of advice. Learning maps is important, yes; but it is far more important to learn your ship. Or your ship type more specifically. I'm not talking learning the general characteristics of a ship line and sticking with it, I mean learning what your ship type is capable of, and more importantly, what it is NOT capable of. Allow me to give you an example. The Smolensk is a fast, arguably stealthy DPM machine, that sets fires like it's mother is Hestia, the Goddess of fire. But I find that the true value of the ship is being played as an open water gunboat, meaning staying on the flanks and whittling BBs down with your insane rate of fire. No smoke, just maneuver to avoid incoming fire and I assure you, it'll work. What I'm trying to say is learn what your ship can do. Don't rely on a set 'strategy'. By doing just this you can significantly improve your performance in battles. The additional benefit is that over time you'll also learn how to counter your opponents because you know what *their* ships can/cannot do, making working against them easier. I'm in no way a good player. Hell, I'm decidedly average. But since learning how to better play specific ships, I've found my performance has improved and much more importantly, I've started enjoying games more. I hope this helps, my friend. @@TrangleC I could have written the exact same comment. Its just that i never realized what exactly it is that makes me quit every time. But after reading your comment I now understand that its exactly what you are writing about. When i play a game of Starcraft and i lose i know exactly why i just lost and i can take a quick look at the replay to see how this situation developed. I get an idea what i can look out for in future games and i feel that i learned something from that loss. Thats absolutely not the case in World of Warships - i mean there are games that i make stupid mistakes in and i know why i lost but those are tactical blunders. Strategically i dont think i really ever learned anything. When i watch guys like flamu talking about central positioning in a BB it makes perfekt sense and i watch him suceed. When i try to immitate it i simply get crushed and i have no idea what i did different - just to name one example out of many.

@@lint8391 Thanks for the offer, but I found that teaming up doesn't really help me. It isn't the fault of the people I team up with, it is my own weirdness, which is the issue. When I play such games together with others, I am too busy trying to be useful, trying to watch out for my division mates, trying to not embarrass myself and so on. All that worrying and trying hard makes me play really shitty, much worse than when I am alone. And then I get nervous and have a bad consciousness, because I'm fucking up the battle for my division and team mates. I joined a beginner friendly guild (or whatever it is called in WoWS, I don't even remember now) and a bunch of really good, experienced players with great stats took me under their wings and played with me. But I have to admit, I didn't really learn anything from that. They went left, I went left, they went right, I went right, but still, everything remained looking random and luck based to me. I never understood why we went left or right and in battle, they didn't have the time to explain to me why. To be honest, despite them being experienced and successful players, I rather got the feeling they just followed their guts too and didn't really know why they went left or right either. Sometimes it worked out, sometimes it didn't. Still seemed random. I don't do scroll-zooming. That is one of the things I learned from Jingles and other RU-vidrs. As I said, when it comes to the basic tactical stuff, how to run the ship, how to aim the guns, how to avoid torpedoes and so on, I dare say I am OK. It really is the "Big Picture" stuff that eludes me. Knowing where to go, why, how to react to greater developments on the battlefield and so on.

Though Mino still has a faster reload with bigger guns. Smolensk only has 130mm guns. If Mino had HE there wouldn’t be a point to playing any other ship.

The Smolensk isn't as OP as people claim, my friend. Yes, you can have some fantastic games in her, but overall she's not technically OP. At least IMHO.

normallyChallenged I even have a Smolensk and yeah it’s not as bad as it used to be. The IFHE nerf means you either trade shatters for fires and radar is more common with the RU cruiser split. Not to mention Thunderer can cit Smol at all ranges with AP or HE. And the MVR can delete smol with AP rockets. While strong she isn’t as OP as she used to be. I’m usually more concerned about enemy Thunderers and heck my own Thunderer can carry where Smol just can’t. Heck even Nevsky is more terrifying than Smol.

@@wtpiv6041 EXACTLY. Running into BBs like the Thunderer or Conqkek, or hell, even the Jean Bart with its reload booster means instant death. The Smolensk isn't OP anymore. I set in average 6-7 fires a match and get about 40k fire damage and 20k otherwise. So totally about 60-70k per match. Shatters absolutely rule my damage output. But if I take IFHE that 11% fire change gets cut to a pitiable 5.5%. Hardly a worthy trade.

@@wtpiv6041 except thunderers cant hit behind islands. Their angle of fire is more angled than Smolenks, and you can't see on smoke. To kill a smolenks you HAVE see it. Plus its a maneuverable smalls ship.

To be fair, sometimes in the heat of battle when you're doing amazingly you can lose yourself to the sense of invincibility. Had that happen in a previous Ranked season in my Bismarck. Crushed over half the enemy team, capped, had a big points advantage, then got put in a 1v1 situation with a Hipper. I had my hydro running and he was about to sail out in front of me, broadside. Had I turned away and lured him out, I would have won and he would have been powerless to stop me. Instead, the shit for brains sailing the Bismarck chose to take a duel, face to face, failed to kill the Hipper by about 800 HP, then died to torps. Over 200k damage, two caps and 4 kills. It was one of those severe and sudden rushes of shit to the brain I still have trouble comprehending...and I was the guy responsible xD

@@RPGTKingpin Not entirely that. Notice C isn't being capped so I was thinking "Hm, they are not spotted, so far away and I don't see C getting capped". So I was getting ready to bow-in because bailing would have landed me in spotting range of the Saint Louis. Turns out I was wrong.

Yeah, there are some pretty interesting map designs that often get overlooked. Fault Line is a great example. It has a big rock shaped like a lion head and the town to the east of the map is very cool

it would be a shame if a dozen or so armour piercing shells happened to 'accidentally' hit a house

Tier 5-8 MM is the most fun. Tier 10 games... meh, most people barely leave their side of the map. Just drive forward a little and park, camp for 15 mins.

He was careless earlier too. That Musashi early on was well spotted and he knew he was likely to have guns pointed towards where he back out, and that could very easily have sunk him. High risk, high reward kinda player it seems. Lotsa fun when it works, but it's safe to say this game is an "after the fact" pick. :)

@@aerokiinesis It's a TEAM game. Sure, here, he may have carried his team, but that doesn't happen always. You're not just toying with your own time and effort here. You have to keep that in mind when you think about getting cocky and nearly throw it

@Doktor Schnabel Yeah, got to my had, but I was half-drunk at 10 in the evening after a day of work. Looking back at it there are imperfections, but hey, this was still impressive. I did get better about the whole showboating thing in the past 10 months. Still, a drop of good whiskey or vodka and I tend to slip back slightly.

they'd still need line of sight on him, and if he can run away a little faster or equal to their speed while they're trying to cap.. he wouldn't have been fired upon, yeah its not cool to hide into a corner but the radar wouldn't have lit him up the smoke still would've covered him at distance.

There are so many people I see that say they disable chat. So you can't assume teamwork. But there was 0 reason to use or sit in the smoke. He's extremely lucky the French cruiser kept shooting AP

@@dawfydd Except for one point (Re-watching this with friends who got into WoWs just now). Saint Louis was at 12.2km when you see him closing near the island. There was a very real chance of getting caught with my pants down if I ran. Without the Nevsky's intervention (And I didn't know where the ship was, nor its stats, really) the smokescreen put me in an excellent position.

smoke was fine. staying IN it was bad... especially when originally he thought the Nevsky was following the Saint marie, but he should have noticed that C was being capped, which meant the nevsky was in C, and very close to being in radar range. he. fucked. up.
