This 3d animation visualizes the world population and its growth between the years 1950 and 2050. The underlying data is from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
The population of each country is visualized as a "mountain." The more volume a "mountain" has the more population there is in that country. Note that each country only has a single mountain or mountain range, there are no valleys. That's because the population data is only mapped to the overall volume of each country's mountain - the mountain peaks within a country are all located in the center of that country, not where population is high.
The taller a mountain the more densely populated that country is. Countries with very low population density have barely perceivable hills, visualized mostly in blue. And again, the location of these hills is simply in the country's center, not where population is concentrated.
Population growth is visualized in a magenta color. The more magenta there is in a country the faster its population is growing.
