World Population Growth | Cinematic Data

This 3d animation visualizes the world population and its growth between the years 1950 and 2050. The underlying data is from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
The population of each country is visualized as a "mountain." The more volume a "mountain" has the more population there is in that country. Note that each country only has a single mountain or mountain range, there are no valleys. That's because the population data is only mapped to the overall volume of each country's mountain - the mountain peaks within a country are all located in the center of that country, not where population is high.
The taller a mountain the more densely populated that country is. Countries with very low population density have barely perceivable hills, visualized mostly in blue. And again, the location of these hills is simply in the country's center, not where population is concentrated.
Population growth is visualized in a magenta color. The more magenta there is in a country the faster its population is growing.

My favorite part is how Egypt's mountain towards the end totally looks like a pyramid.

Just found your channel! Honestly all this stuff so amazing I have so many questions! - how did you learn to do this? - what program are you using? - do you work in VFX as a job? Or a hobby? Would love to know :) subbed!

Thank you, glad to hear it! I've been doing 3d and CGI for nearly 20 years, so I've had plenty of time to learn about it. These days I do everything in Houdini. I work as a professional 3d generalist, but it did indeed all start as a hobby, in the early 2000s.

Is it animated using like a sim?
@Digipiction
@Digipiction 2 года назад
The animation is based on an existing data set, so there was no simulation necessary. You would only simulate if you needed to create data that doesn't exist yet.

I hope I'm alive to see this population growth. With Africa is slowly but surely getting their economic independence back and China/India surpassing billions will be world I want to see.

why are north usa and north china so bright
@Digipiction

All countries use the same shading: it starts off blue at the very base then turns yellow as the mountain gets taller. Since the mountains have different heights and steepness (depending on that country's population density) the angle in which they are hit by light also differs.
