I was totaly blown away by the WOW video of this chanel. Imagine: in mid 2000 it was normal that the devs tell you:" well you finsihed the boss.. but we dont like the way you did it. So you are banned" I mean back then, you using an exploit was your mistake. Not the programmers that gave you a broken game to play. Not that's the programmers job to fix this kind of stuff. It's always a happy time when I see others take inspiration from Summoning Salt and down their own WR progression vids! Great job! I would just give a couple of suggestions: 1.) Maybe up the volume on your own mic a bit. It was much more noticeable at the start, but your own commentary sounded very muted compared to the BGM or in-game sounds you may have had going at the time. 2.) I might turn down your speaking speed a notch. It didn't feel rushed, per se, but you were speaking very quickly and it's hard to follow at times. These are merely suggestions, though. If you're satisfied with your setup, don't worry too much about it. That category sweep sounds super-interesting, and I imagine you might want to do the other games in the EB/Mother series, too.
@Abyssoft
@Abyssoft 3 года назад
You weren't the first to bring this up, and the points you made were ones I took into account early one, if you check my later videos after this one the rate of speech and volume issues got sorted (or at least better!) I know the DKR video I'm still speaking a bit quickly, but all the videos after that I think I've hit my groove; let me know what you think!

@dimensionalhero9183 3 года назад
From what I remember about most speedruns, the time ends at the last "meaningful" input in the game. Y'know, beating the final battle. Like how in NSMB2, the credits are PLAYABLE but they don't matter. Ness going home is gameplay, it just isn't gameplay that can really be improved upon or worked with. Or I'm wrong and people just don't wanna play the walk back home.

@greenaum

It's not like there haven't been perfectly good random number generator algorithms about for use in computers for decades. Seed it with something like the exact number of machine cycles it takes the player to press a certain button, or collect entropy from other movements. But then feed that into an RNG, perhaps calling the function every menu-open or whatever, rather than just simply incrementing it. That way you get "random" numbers that jump all over the place, not just increase within a small range. Japanese game programmers seemed susceptible to this, not having heard of, say, a linear-feedback shift register, that can produce thousands of seemingly random numbers before it cycles back round. Random numbers is basic simple stuff, they should have done much better.

I think it would be good to try and space out the segments a little better. I know it's nearly an hour long and you probably didn't want this to be 1.5-2 hours, but some of the pacing is really hard to digest. For instance, from 6:20 to 8:29 you rapid-fire a LOT of stuff that should have been explained. 6:25 - who is this TASr? When was the run done? What was the time (in relation to the current WR)? Was this TAS a big deal to the community at the time? What site was the TAS uploaded / was it hard to find the TAS? Why was Nemi the only one who integrated TAS strats into an RTA setting? Was there an active discussion on boards about incorporating these strats? 6:38 - No, I don't. You talked about the stopwatch glitch for 3 total seconds several minutes earlier and didn't really make it out to be a big deal, that it was just a specific Runner's strat and not the meta strat that everyone used at the time. With you compounding a lot of information into very fast segments, it's hard to know what information is important to the actual progression of the speedrun and what is just random factoids. 7:18 to 7:32 - This is a TON of gameplay that is just glossed over. As this is meant to be a progression video, it would be nice to get a brief understanding of the base game. You mention in this part about a "dupe glitch" despite never having mentioned it before and then continue on with the WR route without mentioning when this glitch was found, how it was performed, if the aforementioned Japanese runners used it (earlier you said they only used Stair Glitch and Twoson Skip), etc. 8:06 to 8:14 - What glitch? There aren't stairs there so it is correctly "another" out of bounds glitch as you stated, but what is the glitch. How is it performed, when was it found, and all that stuff I've mentioned before. 8:20 to 8:24 - Who are these runners? How close did some of the runners get? Were they all Western or was the Japanese scene still active? Were any major glitches found in these 11 months? Maybe these are just nitpicks, but I think a video that is trying to go over the ENTIRE progression of EarthBound's world records should be a deep-dive, not a gloss-over.

A 53 minute gloss over eh?

@@Tekenu Basically, yes. A large portion of this video is nothing more than "new route was found, these runners fought over the record". There is very little depth discussion about the runs themselves. The obviois comparison is Summoning Salt but I think it is valid here. Watch one of his vids and you'll notice what I mean when I say this one FEELS rushed.
