Interesting harmonic progressions are all about suspense and release and therefore require mini harmonic bridges between chords. Not only does this song have that in spades it's also about...BRIDGES! Or at least uses a bridge as a metaphor anyway. So really Paul Simon was on to a winner from the start....
He says of the song that it came very quickly, so quickly in fact he was taken by surprise not really knowing where it had come from. As with many songs, the conception is just the start of the story though as it's the combination of Art Garfunkel's stunning vocals (which Paul would forever regret gifting to him) with Larry Knectels astonishing piano playing that lifts it to its timeless classic status.
Surely one of the greatest chord progressions of all time!
