I've been consciously not straying too deeply into the world of musical theatre and jazz on this series as frankly if I swam in that ocean I might not find my way back to shore again... I've chosen to look at 'You'll never walk alone' by the great Rodgers & Hammerstein however as it's one of those songs that has transcended the boundaries of the theatre walls and become a classic in its own right, becoming part of the cultural fabric of our time and even helping to strengthen Liverpool FC's mythology, becoming their anthem of pride.
What makes it anthemic? What's there in the music that gives it the feel of a call to action, to resillence and musters a spirit of hope and community? My hunch is that a key component is the use of clever bass rises and falls, shifting pedal points that lift us in suspenses and propel us in an always forward trajectory.
Thanks for your continued support in these videos. If you'd like to suport me even more you can head to my patreon site via the link in my bio where you can get exclusive access to a new series called 'Learn from the Masters'!
Thanks for watching!
