THANK YOU! I am a volunteer firefighter as well (well im still in training, but i have all my bunker gear, my pager, and i respond to calls) i hate when people say volunteers arent as good as full time firefighters, both have to be trained to NFPA standards, and volunteers in very rural areas, do some things that a lot of full time firefighters, like those in cities, will never do, my fire department is small, but we live in a small town on mount desert island in maine

Last time I checked, a fire fighter is a fire fighter. He puts out fires, assists in accidents, rescues people and animals, etc. Volunteer, paid, they're all the same. If you save my house from burning down, you get the same respect regardless of whether you get a pay check or not. Volunteer departments cover a vast percentage of area that can't be easily reached by paid departments which increases fire protection coverage. You're all in the same boat. Don't rock it so bad everyone falls out.

Dr. Burton Clark has some pretty interesting articles up about when to call Mayday. He points out that it's rare that firefighters are unfamiliar with being in a real mayday situation - trapped or unaware of where you are. These are deadly situations and pride or courtesy should not delay making the call because if the situation gets worse you will become a bigger liability. Real life and training exercises show that firefighters usually put off Mayday until too late (i.e. the Charleston Nine).
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 12 лет назад
that sounds correct :) 100ft (or maybe 98 or so) at horizontal line and below - that's what we regularly do at the state's fire-fighting schools and at our station. I have some pics and vids of it, I'll send you a link in a few minutes

Holy crap guys. The one guy wasn't ragging on the volunteers he was stating a fact, I literally lived in a fire station for a year, one of the busiest in my area, we take pride in what we do. We didn't catch 13000 calls. We caught about 1 short of 800 with 50 jobs and I beleive 70 pins. Or the other way around. A company can have a million calls but don't meant anything without protecting the property and lives we do it for. Paid guys owe a lot of their training to volunteer stuff and sometimes

us volunteers take pride in what we do as well, yes most career firefighters get more on call experience but thats only because most full time departments are in cities where more stuff happens but that doesnt mean career firefighters are better than volunteer firefighters, so i dont know why people are arguing, because NFPA requires us to have the same training, doesnt matter whether youre career or volunteer, we are all firefighters, we're brothers and we're suppose to look out for each other

Our "Class A" pumpers pump 1500 Gallons per minute or 5678 litres. HOWEVER, I have met firefighters from London who used to laugh at how much water we apply to extinguish a fire - until thay came over and saw the difference in construction between the US and UK. US construction is largely wood frame (for dwellings), while my friend from London stated that almost all buildings there are mostly brick or stone.
@JonathanH1253
@JonathanH1253 12 лет назад
yeah we do and in my fire departments case, we have ice water rescue training, which is something that a lot of full timers dont have, unless they are in a place with a lot of lakes, yes full timers get more calls, but we all have the same training, volunteers still have to go to a fire academy to become SCBA certified, we still have to take EVOC in order to drive fire trucks,

All this is Ladder truck is, is an older model of a tiller from what they use to do now they make both trailer hooked models and one peice models etc. But if you want to see a better one look for it. It's a ladder truck, engine, rescue, hazmat, tanker, etc. all in one and weighs over 65,000 without any tools on it which can make it weigh over 66,000lbs.

The 110 foot Tillered ariel at my station can be extended to full legnth and support 1000 pounds (453.592 KG) from the ground (approx. -20 degrees) to 90degrees while dry. It can flow 1000 Gallons (3785 Liters) per minute with a 500 Pound (226.7 KG) load at any angle. This is a Spartan/Quality truck with an ariel by Ariel Innovations.

***** our version at my local fire station in the UK is roughly the same size as this one but we have all the tools that we have on our main pumo including lengths of hose, extraction tools smoke fans and many TICs (thermal imaging camera), they can only accommodate 2 fire fighters but when that leaves the bay the main pump which carries 5 leaves before and we always have more fire engines on hand, we have got over 25 stations in our county and its not a big county either, we have loads of specialist engines including a massive Mercedes Unimog that can travel almost anywhere so I would say its on par with the american ones apart from 1 perspective, the American ones look way cooler

@azul8811
@azul8811 12 лет назад
@hockypimp Actually, NYC has but a handful of tiller trucks in service. At one time, they all were tiller apparatus... for the very reason you mention. I don't recall when the 1st Tower Laddders were placed in service, but I believe it was the mid 1960's. The plan was to have 1/3 of the trucks tillers, 1/3 rear mounts and the remaining 1/3 tower ladders, but that's not what happened. Now they are mainly rear mounts and tower ladders.

@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 12 лет назад
still the US Tiller is wider, and here really every inch counts; e.g. a Pierce Tiller has 96" body width - already by that it wouldn't fit through some of the roads. For real, if we drive through the small roads, we don't even have a hand's width space. Any source for the statement about the strength? I unfortunately couldn't find much. keep in mind that we also have 170 ft and 367ft Aerials! Our pumps usually reach up to 3800lpm, which yes is less than yours, but not that much, right?
@Jakerz64
@Jakerz64 12 лет назад
@shadow200196 what are you talking about? what truck ops are occurring while they are responding that the guy steering the tiller could be doing instead? He can and does still do any truck ops once they get on scene. its a great apparatus for areas that are harder for ladders to maneuver
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 12 лет назад
we don't have tillers over here, but since our average 100ft Aerial Ladder truck is much shorther than the american ones, we also get around turns easier; Still, some FD here have Aerials with a steerable rear axle, but that one isn't steered by so. at the back but it is automaticly while driving, and to park on-scene it can be switched to manual and then steered from the cab
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 11 лет назад
our station would be big enough (besides the other rigs we have three 100ft Tower Ladders at the station), but the historic city center has too small roads so a Tiller isn't an option for us
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 12 лет назад
you knwo why we'll never get a Tiller here (am from Europe). It's simply not compact and maneuverable enough. On the same size of truck we have 170 ft ladders (btw. the biggest Aerial here has 367 ft). There's simply no way a US size fire truck makes it through a 1000 to 2000 year old city center. And btw even some of our comparatively small Aerial Ladder truck have 4-whell steering to manage the smallest roads

I actually looked up the UK ARP. Small but effective machine. But it looks like its very short on tools. I highly doubt the UK ARP that I looked at had ALL of the essentials that a truck company here in the US should have, such as spare bottles, extrication equipment, tools, smoke ejectors, heat cameras, hose, etc, not to metion a fraction of the manpower. Not knocking it at all, but its done for a reason. Size doesn't necessarily mean showboating. Every location has different requirements
@paulcorbinful
@paulcorbinful 11 лет назад
200' would make it one of very few verrrrry huge ladder trucks. Probably is the usual 100' or at most 125'. Also, it looks like it has its own pump which means it could be assigned as an 'engine' if dispatch wanted to... but not likely.
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 12 лет назад
here in my city the Volunteers usually arrive at least 5 to 10 minutes after the paid FD has all it's dispatched trucks on scene, even if their stations are much closer to the scene. Same with really big emergencies. The only ones arriving behind the Volunteers are the EMS services (but not the local EMS but EMS from all over the state) and maybe the Federal Agency for Technical Relief

back in the year 179 no one thought about the size of that future thing called fire truck :) well in most streets they'd fit through, but especially in the inner historic city center even we with allwheel steering get very close to the buildings' edges. I don't know how many ours do while discharging a certain stream, just that the bucket carries up to 1190 pounds and the ladder can lift up to 8800 pounds. btw we can extend the ladder to the full 100ft length both a 0° and also at -17°

@GayBoyRunning: Just in case you are nottrolling, I;ll spell it out for you. With the tillered ariel, you can turn tighter corners than a truck half it's length. The entire point of the driver in the rear is to allow that 100 foot ariel to negotiate streets that most other fire trucks can't. If you have ever seen a competent pair of drivers take one of these through a crowded city street, it would make your jaw drop.

Dear, you are simply misinformed. Tillers are exactly what a congested streets city needs. Its turning radius its the same a tractor has, the rear driver (the "tiller") makes this truck ultra maneuvrable. Besides, a NFPA tower its 3 o 4 times as strong as an european one, and the gpm from the master stream are at least twice as big (2.000lpm v/s 4.000lpm, or 500 gpm v/s 1.000 gpm). See how a tractor truck maneuvres, and the tiller its even superior with its rear axis driving.

Pretty bombass tiller. It wouldn't be used to get a cat out of a tree though, we don't do that anymore. Ever seen a cats skeleton up in a tree? Neither have we. I've also seen some tower ladders with independent rear axles, able to go sideways down a street.

You may be a tactical gear guru, but if you haven't driven a Rosenbauer, you HAVEN'T driven the best, so stick to gear. The Rosenbauer Aerials Division produces the highest quality aerial ladders and platforms available in mid-mount or rear-mount designs. They offer ladders in 60, 75 and 109 ft. lengths, and platforms in 85 or 104 ft. lengths.

@thelolmachine27 its because dr's get into it for the money. dr's make 200-300,000 a year after 10 years of college. firemen make 50-60,000 depending on the city. also firemen arent required to carry a million dollar malpractice policy because people sue dr's left and right. drs also have an amazingly high workload. they can be at the hospital 12-18 hours a day EVERYDAY seeing people non stop.
