240mm Mortar 2S4 "Tulpan"("Tulip")
shoots with cluster bomb,actively-reactive, high-precision shells and nuclear shells - up to 18 km range ability.
Automatic recharging system.
Based on chassis of mine minelayer, which may also protects the crew from radiation.
Weapon are indispensable in assaulting utterly fortified targest and city combats - when a very exact shot is needed.
Shells which're shown there:
130kg high-explosive shell, charge weights -32kilos;
cluster bomb have 24 high-explosive shells-covering by 1 shot 4 football fields area;
correcting shell 1K113 "Smelchak"("audacious") - the flying shell use target illumination within 3 sec (such time doesn't allow the emeny to use jammers) to correct its course, may hit circle 2-3 meter diameter at maximum range with 90% probability.
Military use examples:
Afghanistan - hit the caves at 1 shot in 90%,
Chechnya - fortified avenue of approach at petroleum refinery.
The largest NATO Mortar caliber - 120mm (2times less)

Actually the use of the mortar would be against prepared positions like bunkers, infantry-made cover and buildings. It is very accurate and with it being 240mm it can easily defeat most surface and near subsurface fortifications. It also can be used in the defensive posture, attacking a set area like a valley in coordination with other SPGs and artillery pieces to saturate an area. Infantry don't win wars, artillery does.

@Nickael7 So the HCP cap in the end stored how much of the energy actually intended to be used for the railgun? From your description, that 7%, be it the fastest reloading process or not are still stored in the HCP to be discharged into the railgun correct? If we assume 15% velocity boost thanks to the railgun for example, that would take what? 30% of the energy of the original shell? So if we take a 15MJ shell that's already over 4MJ of energy and that fits to the HCP within tank volume?

A mortar is a type of artillery. The reason for not having it be a typical howitzer is because of range. Mortars can drop explosives on close to mid-range troops with deadly accuracy, while howitzers are for mid to long range support.
@IonoTheFanatics
@IonoTheFanatics 12 лет назад
@Nickael7 If most of the power is still coming from the diesel engine charging the capacitor through the alternator then it's still limited by the exact same problem that made standard railgun unfeasible for tank chassis size to begin with since basic railgun is powered in the exact same manner. So what exactly have we achieved with the system then?

@IonoTheFanatics

@Nickael7 But here's the thing, since the projectile is not in contact with the rail when the explosion occur and thus the energy can't be converted directly to lorentz force to propel the projectile, WHERE DO YOU STORE this energy while waiting for the projectile to reach the rail section?
@IonoTheFanatics
@IonoTheFanatics 12 лет назад
@Nickael7 Which then brings to question, why convert part of the explosive energy into electricity when that very same energy can be converted directly into propulsion for the projectile? That may make sense if the conversion from it into electricity (which is not specified how) and then into propulsion in form of lorentz force is more efficient than the explosion itself as a propulsion but the railgun typically have efficiency about 20-30% which is not any better than gunpowder to KE, so why?

Whoa. Not so fast. It's not YET out of service, it has a special purpose. The 2S4 Tulpan saw service in the wars in Afghanistan in the 80's and the siege of Grozny. Pretty effective in taking out large buildings there by actually striking the ground floors! It's actually more effective than an ordinary howitzer because of the almost-vertical attack angle mortars can provide.

@IonoTheFanatics
@IonoTheFanatics 12 лет назад
@Nickael7 Indeed it is something good if it works, the only question is where do you fit this diesel engine to power it? 15% of the 15-20MJ that tank gun projectile can already project out currently for western APFSDS shell is still at least 2MJ or more. Where do we find a compact diesel engine that can produce that kind of output of energy within reasonable time and still fit into a tank?
@IonoTheFanatics
@IonoTheFanatics 12 лет назад
@Nickael7 If the initial explosive could provide the energy to do multiple energy conversion (where energy loss is expected during conversion) then why the hell is it not providing the propulsion force directly which would save the energy lost during the multiple conversion.
@IonoTheFanatics
@IonoTheFanatics 12 лет назад
@Nickael7 Sure, but where does the alternator obtain the energy to convert to electricity to start with? If it draws that power from the explosive event, then that consumes the same energy that directly propel the projectile out via expansion which leads to no net gain in propulsion, so it has to be from somewhere else. where does this energy come from? and heat conversion to electricity in direct mean traditionally are done with thermocouples, except those are EXTREMELY inefficient.
@IonoTheFanatics
@IonoTheFanatics 12 лет назад
@Nickael7 And if we assume standard energy generation or storage density that we can currently achieve and the tank's volume, then the majority of the propulsion power can't possibly be coming from the electromagnetic propulsion so why exactly would they call it a railgun if most of the work to get the projectile velocity is actually done via conventional explosive expansion in the gun chamber?

a lot of people here saying that this thing is slow and can be easily taken out and destroyed. But the russians aren't stupid, there are other support vehicles like BMP's and tanks around to protect them, they travel in regiments, and a lot of these mortars firing several rounds with cluster shells can devastate a large area in a matter of minutes. This weapon has a good record in combat.

@Nickael7 Incidentally 4MJ assumes full efficiency railgun which is of course not the case, if we are being ABSOLUTELY generous and say it has 50% efficiency (which is unheard of) that's 8MJ at least that have to be stored and discharged. So this all fit into the HCP cap with sufficient density that you can cram it into a tank space?
@falstoffe
@falstoffe 14 лет назад
These 240mm's are only used in an Artillery Division at the Front level or higher. It travels in: An artillery division, consisting of six regiments and an anti-tank battalion. Three of the regiments have 162 130mm M46 guns (total) and two of the remainder have 108 152mm D20 howitzers (total). The other regiment has 54 240mm mortars. At the lower levels, they have formations of 120 mm mortars and smaller howitzers. These just supplement them.
@IonoTheFanatics
@IonoTheFanatics 12 лет назад
@Nickael7 So essentially the railgun is powered by the base vehicle engine? since 93% of the power comes from it? And this coming from a solution that supposed to alleviate the problem of gathering enough power for the railgun in the first place since most tanks generator or APU doesn't produce much power at all? And that still doesn't explain how this reverse induction coil supposed to work to generate the electricity, so you have copper coils that picks the massive heat spike, and then?
@krashly71
@krashly71 14 лет назад

@IonoTheFanatics 12 лет назад
@Nickael7 Incidentally of course you raised attention to an interesting point, if the railgun boosted the gun's final projectile velocity by 15% ie: 85% of it is still the chemical process really, then why exactly do you call it a railgun when it's actually propelled by chemical reaction for the most part? and only assisted via EM propulsion? It's a curious point since gun adapters that boost projectile velocity via various method normally doesn't change the gun classification to the adapter.

@nedeljko031 The thing I don't understand is why use a mortar over a howitzer for this size of gun? I would think a comparable sized cannon would do a better job. @Nickael7 250K volt? in a 6x6x12 dimension? and that's with capacitance of what? Or is that classified as well? Say we assume a 15MJ projectile, we want to boost that by 15% in velocity, that'd be 30% or more energy at least so around 4-5 MJ, assuming best case scenario of hypothetical 50% railgun efficiency that's 8-10MJ. and this will fit into just 2 of these HCP cap units you say? I mean you see now why i am very skeptical of this whole thing?
@IonoTheFanatics
@IonoTheFanatics 12 лет назад
@Nickael7 So let's get this straight, we converted chemical potential energy from the explosives, into mechanical energy and we store it in both the altenator and the rest into capacitors, and then we convert it back again to lorentz force by discharging it on the rail when the projectile reached it? And the explosive's chemical energy is supposed to be converted to electric how exactly? Because the basic question one would ask then:

@Nickael7 Actually they used thermocouples array in radioisotope generator, but back to the question, so you have an external diesel engine to power the railgun through the high efficiency alternator. Ok, great, and then where do we fit this thing into the tank? A tank already has it's generator and APU in the most compact form possible given you have to cram a myriad of things into chassis designed to be as small as possible, so where does this diesel engine fit?

Dora is an 80cm railway gun, not a mortar. If you want just the biggest projectile launcher, it's known as the Little David mortar. 900+mm caliber. Takes three days to set up and it's original purpose was as a heavy defensive weapon, with AP shells designed to sink battleships in a single shot. Ultimately used for test launching bombs.
@Treblaine

Counter battery fire would be a big problem with this, especially considering the troops are expected to work in the open and it's so immobile. It doesn't help that the parabolic (rather than elliptical) trajectory of a mortar round (compared to howitzer) is easy to deduce the origin. This would be very dangerous to field if there is any enemy artillery in the area but shouldn't be a problem against militia and rebels who lack radar or sound monitoring equipment.

This is why in every major invasion from WWII on, the first thing the invading army tried to do was wipe out the other's air power. Germany tried to wipe out Britains air bases. Japan tried to wipe out America's Carriers. In Iraq, airports were the first targets of the US campaign...face it. Teh tactics of every General shows. He's right.

@IonoTheFanatics Say, instead of 125mm gun we use 90mm lower explosive canisters to achieve similar performance, we power it up with a railgun assisted tube that gives 15% of extra muzzle velocity. Yes part of large work is done by the explosive canisters, but 15% extra velocity is already something good. If sabot achieve normally 1750m/s with railgun assistance you get 2012.5m/s. In larger bore gun it achieves higher damage not only by velocity, but as well for heavier rods and larger area.

@JackarundaTrue , well, in ancient manuals "mortar" is a piece of artillery able to elevate the barrel up to 80-90 degrees, but usually elevation is set at 45-60 degrees. Mortars were and are used to send explosive munitions at medium distance, but falling with a nearly vertical trajectory hitting the "roof" of targets, where protection is thinner. Cannons (=artillery) are unable to reach such elevation, but they can fire at "zero highness", i. e direct hits

quick notes: how long does it take to get it ready to fire and how long does it take to reload? usually quick firing ability is essential, unless this is used like a missile would be. another point: how long does it take to get it maneuverable after firing? mortar trajectory is very easily spotted and anti-artillery measures (firing at the position, missile, air strike etc) are a serious threat to mortar units. trained in a mortar company.
