Drop Forged Survival: It's a pocket machete! *Uses it like an Axe*
@cwthemachinist
@cwthemachinist 7 лет назад
This is a knife, a folder at that. Even with their labeling of "folding machete" logic should dictate that a folding machete would be a light duty machete at best(small branches, vines, green growth). This knife, the way you were using it, was coming up against a dead stop with all of that momentum behind it. That force gets imparted directly onto the hinge pins and lock mechanism. A light duty folding "machete would not encounter these forces because it wouldn't be chopping through dry, hardwood pallets, against the grain. It was being used as an axe, which isn't a fair test. It's like saying this chisel made of glass won't chip concrete without shattering and it should because the manufacturer called it a chisel.
@ArtietheArchon

Saw it here first, folks. A folding knife will break if you try to break it
@freman007

Although someone has probably already mentioned it, the story I was told from an Opinel dealer was that Opinel used to have a large plastic bladed Opinel knife that dealers used to keep on top of their display cabinets. People would come in and look at it and go "wow, can we buy one that size?" Eventually the question got back to Opinel HQ and they were like, "well we already make the handle and Virolock for the plastic blade, let's make a steel blade that fits the handle." Thus the No. 13 was born. That was what I was told anyway. However it is a scaled up Opinel knife, which means it's a good slicer, probably a decent kitchen knife, but by no means a hard use knife.
@DropForgedSurvival
@DropForgedSurvival 8 лет назад
Haha interesting story. Most folding blade can't handle this type of work but... Advertising lead me to put it to the test. Nothing more. Very nice slicer indeed.
@nic12344

Where did you see it advertised as a machete?
@roadwary56
@roadwary56 7 лет назад
Big fan of Opinels. Got many of them. Not this one yet, yet being the operative word. Opinels are awesome chore knives in and out of the kitchen, for camping, hiking (for the light weight yet rugged construction) gardening, great/king slicers for rope, webbing, etc.. The tradition and history of these guys is very cool. Being able to lock the blade up in either the open or closed positions is handy as hell. The ability to be locked closed for safety around small children is unique. Locked open for obvious reasons when desired but usually the retention by itself is good enough for me but the added security of the tumble lock in open is useful if using the point vigorously. The machete claim...well I wonder if this is a legitimate claim by the manufactures. I have read where it is more of a novelty in the 13. Anyway I think it may be useful with thinner vines and blackberry thickets. It is absolutely not designed for that kind of abuse. Only a formidable fixed blade of titanic proportions would I abuse on pallets like that. Remember what the knife was originally design to handle, otherwise it is only silly entertainment. Try an ESEE Junglas for that task. A hatchet works better. I wonder then if that claim was by some knot-head here in the US sector of Opinel. Machetes are not used to chop pallets dude. Again common sense says it could be useful to clear some light vines and blackberry forests. First off use your noggin, a full tang would be challenged in your test. You must be inexperienced with knives to be taken with what the reality of what that knife was designed for. Use it in the woods for vines as machetes are commonly used for. Damn right machetes are NOT used as pallet wrecking. Real dumb demonstration. Sorry to say.

I've got a bunch of Opinels of various sizes as well, one I own for 30 years now. They're easy to sharpen and will last a very long time if you don't abuse them. Although it's sharp, the giant No 13 was first produced in the 1970s as a promotional item to be used in shop windows. I bought the No 13 when it was on sale in France and tbh I've never used it for any other purpose than decoration :-)

@DropForgedSurvival 8 лет назад
I personally don't consider a 1/2" thick wooden plank from a pallet heavy or hard chopping at all. 5" diameter or larger tree where I grew up learning what hard chopping is. This shouldn't be a terrible challenge and for the blade itself it did well. Just the hinge and lock failed. All I do is test products and see what happens.. I feel machete blade needs to be longer to realistic brush clearing.

Original machetes are designed to cut vegetation,sugar canes,corn etc,they are not meant to replace an axe and all of these machetes,are made from thin steel stock.However,the overbuild US made machetes, with thicker steel stock then yes,these are chopers with a machete profile look. I didn't dislike this video, but the dislikes I see are propably because you tried to chop wood with a heavy folder.Of course it would break. No you wouldn’t because it’s clearly not made for that sort of work it is not an axe or hatchet. If you did use the opinel No.13 as a machete you would use it like you would a Latin machete it’s for lighter work. If you wanted a machete that’s more heavy duty and can do things axes can do you’d use something like the condor Golok machete. opinel knives were originally peasant knives there basic the lock on the knife is basic it is NOT the Tri-ad lock it’s pretty obvious opinels shouldn’t be taking abuse like that. It all comes down to common sense which you clearly haven’t got any. Educate your self. In my opinion this video should have more dislikes and should be taken down.

Yeah saw that just thought it was interesting, check out the European site they just say it's good for BBQ due to the wooden handle not conducting heat. Really liked the review :)

A machete is used on high grass and vines not chopping wood smh i almost died just looking at the damage made on this knive that was meant for cutting not chopping
@williamj3459

It's meant as a display unit. They don't sell it as a machete.

LOL. It is not sold as a machete. It is said that many clients use it as a machete. What if you use a Fiat 500 as a Hummer ?

your just gonna break it, three words "tramontina machete Brazil" 😀 to say real machete is for light use is bull shit! Tree after tree not a mark.
@adammcguinness9950
@adammcguinness9950 3 года назад
I’ve used my Tramontinas in ways that would make people cringe but they are super tough machetes. I used my 26” yesterday to cut a green branch down, 20cms thick, not a problem. I dulled the tip but that was from hitting the ground.

I'm not french but you disrespected the philosophy of use for this knife. Machetes are for green limbs not for hardwoods. Sick of these unrealistic destructive tests. Opinels are a peasant knife that have a simple elegance and to be used with love and care. Do yourself and buy an axe.

Olight drill a hole through the head of one of their torches to demonstrate its strength. Just cause the manufacturer says/does something, it doesn’t mean you should. Way to ruin a great knife....👎🏼

If you reeeeeally wanted, you could just have batoned on the blade without puting too much pressure on the handle .... just say. Still I saw these knives skin big fish like no other. That is its real purpose and stop batoning with knives!
