Hello everyone, MT here with the return of the World Triathlon Series in Leeds, United Kingdom! Highlighting the Elite Women’s Race that took place all within Roundhay Park.
This was among several other events that were taking part throughout 2021 where the government were doing their long-term experiment of how to welcome back mass gatherings safely as the country was coming out of the pandemic lockdown. However, I will have to say is what I was annoyed of how they were having to do sudden last-minute changes. Simply as when I was there, they gave no notice to the people watching as they did slight changes to the routes compare to the ones that were first published on the internet, making it really confusing of where to go to see the action. What’s more, all ticket holders were allowed into the park to see the action up close; therefore, no shots I’m afraid of the transitions that had happened.
Anyways, back to the action; the athletes began with the 1500m swim around the waterloo lake (two laps of 750m each). On the first lap, they all were pretty much together but the lead racers began to create some distance ahead of the others on the second lap before they climbed out to do the first transition, moving from swimming to cycling. The racers got split up into a mixture of groups with Maya Kingma from the Netherlands and British girls Jessica Learmonth and Sophie Coldwell leading ahead while the rest of the pack were chasing behind in bigger groups. Everyone eventually went through the final transition, off their bikes and into their shoes for the running stage. Once more, all the athletes were separated into several small and big groups with Maya, Jessica and Sophie still hanging onto the lead positions and they maintained it until the end with Maya taking the Gold medal, Jessica taking Sliver and Sophie having Bronze.
Overall, this year’s may not have been completely satisfying as it had been in previous years but it was at least good enough to get out and about and be able to see an event like this again. We can only hope for better years ahead along with better events and without having people the need to maintain physical distance from each other. Hope you all enjoy this and stay safe!
