Ironically enough apparently Franz Ferdinand was said to have been the most supportive of giving the smaller nations inside the Austro-Hungarian empire independence
@Talyrion
@Talyrion 3 года назад
To be precise, he was aware that the empire was in dire need of reforms, and was in favour of more autonomy for the various nationalities living inside. However, it kind of made him a prime target for those seeking independance, since if he were to succeed, that could mean less support from the people to completely break away with Austro-Hungary (while the usual heavy-handed autocrats would only fuel that desire).

The general in charge of Russian forces in at battle of Tannenburg, Alexander Samsonov, committed suicide after the battle. Samsonov and his staff tried to escape, first on horseback and then on foot. Trapped in a nearby village, he ordered his men to escape before slipping into the woods with a revolver. von Spee, that german admiral off the coast of Chile, wasn't the first to go down with his ship. He had to watch as his two sons died as their boats sank before his did. Horrible stuff.

The reason the casualties from battle were so high in WWI is because the Generals were using battle tactics developed by Napoleon over a hundred years earlier against military weapons that were designed to wage war on an industrial level. The American Civil War was as deadly for almost the same reason and there were European military observers on both the Union and Confederate sides who obviously failed to learn anything.

That and Europe still had a class system that allowed some men to make decisions based on their blood rather than competence, and said that those men were worth more than the hundreds of thousands they sent to die. If there's one good thing to come out of WWI, it's the abolishment of the class system and a respect for human life that simply didn't exist before.

It's the reason that Germany by the end of WWI had some effective strategies, alas used far to late with the whole stormtroopers and tactical attacks at different points rather than just do an en-masse assault and pray for a breakthrough.

Yes but not only. In fact, there were a lot of european wars in the 19th century. For example, crimean War, two Wars between prussia and denmark, another War between prussia and austrian-hungarian empire, other Wars between austrian-hungarian empire and Italy, in Africa, the boers War, in the early 20th century, russian vs japan War... And in 1870, a war between prussia and France. In fact, not only the tactics were wrong, we can't put all the blame on the generals ; those Times were insane in terms of inventions, innovations, etc. That said, they tried and sometimes learnt from those Wars. For example, the british learnt to use camo uniforms due to the modern rifles the boers had. But sometimes, you can "learn" wrong lessons. In 1870 war's, there was a lot of movements. So, both French and prussians believed the ww1 would be a movement War too... Then, After they won the ww1, which was mainly (but not only) a Static War, the French believed that the next War would also be a Static one. And it was not.

13:20 The unintended problem of the era of treaties that preceeded WWI, and ended up creating a solid state of peace between the many European nations (which was led by Germany's diplomatic efforts by the way), was that almost every country that could ever be involved had defensive treaties with either Britain, Germany or Russia.

It’s not that the generals didn’t understand that technology had made older strategies far less useful, it’s that they hadn’t come up with a sufficient way to overtake the enemy who is entrenched. The options were to not do any offensives (which wasn’t tenable for leaders because that’s not trying to win the war it’s just trying not to lose more land) or attempt to out will the enemy despite the horrifying casualties. Once the tank and military aircraft were invented and improved they were a hugely successful tool to overtake enemy lines and that’s when the war started to be lost/won

As you correctly suggest the development of machine guns and barbed wire meant that it had become much easier to fight a defensive war with the odds tipping against the attackers although trench warfare was not new and had been a part of the Russian Japanese war. The first weeks were not the trench warfare that now epitomises our memory and it really started after the German advance was stopped at the Marne. However one one the big factors in WW1 was the development of artillery which was becoming more accurate, quicker firing and of longer range which is why armies dug themselves underground where it was much safer. Artillery accounted for most casualties in WW1.

The first King of Belgium Leopold had been married to Queen Victoria's cousin Princess Charlotte who died in childbirth along with her baby which is how Victoria ended up as the heir to the British throne. Also Leopold was Victoria's husband Prince Albert's uncle and Victoria's mother's brother. That's why Britain was the guarantor of Belgian neutrality in 1914. Germany as a nation was only 43 years old and Italy as a nation was only 53 years old.

The reasons for WW1 are complex and historians continue to argue the reasons. In one sense they can be traced through many centuries at least to Charlemagne and his legacy of Empire which evolved into the 30 years war in the 17th century and the occupation of the Balkans by the Ottomans. A more immediate influence was that of Napoleon contributing to the development of the Austrian/Hungarian Empire, accelerating a desire for German unification, fuelling German/French conflict and resulting in the creation of Belgium as an independent state for which Britain and Prussia guaranteed neutrality in 1839. But for the German breach of Belgian neutrality in 1914 it is unlikely that Britain would have joined the war with a small army at first which despite a lack of artillery was professional and experienced and played a major part in stopping the German advance at the Marne.

Bosnia where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated had been a part of the Ottoman Empire unit just before WW1 when it was annexed by Austria. Since Bosnia had both German and Slavic ethnic people this caused conflict with Serbia which saw itself as a Slavic country. Dissident Slavs formed terrorist groups to fight Austrian rule such as the Black Hand Gang and Serbia trained and armed them which is why Princeps and his colleagues had explosives and firearms and why Austria accused Serbia of the assassination. Other Austrian ministers had been killed in previous attacks.

World War 1 explained as a bar fight: Germany, Austria and Italy are standing together in the middle of a pub when Serbia bumps into Austria and spills Austria’s pint. Austria demands Serbia buy it a whole new suit because of the new beer stains on its trouser leg. Germany expresses its support of Austria’s point of view. Britain recommends that everyone calm down a bit. Serbia points out that it can’t afford a whole new suit, but offers to pay for the cleaning of Austria’s trousers. Russia and Serbia look at Austria. Austria asks Serbia who they’re looking at. Russia suggests that Austria should leave its little brother alone. Austria inquires as to whose army will help Russia make them do so. Germany appeals to Britain that France has been eyeing Britain, and that it’s unwise for Britain not to intervene. Britain replies that France can look at whoever it wants to, and that Britain has been watching Germany too, and what is Germany going to do about it? Germany tells Russia to stop looking at Austria, or Germany will render Russia incapable of such action anymore. Britain and France ask Germany whether it’s looking at Belgium. Turkey and Germany go off into a corner and whisper. When they come back, Turkey makes a show of not looking at anyone. Germany rolls up its sleeves, looks at France, and punches Belgium and Luxembourg, who had been minding their own business at the end of the bar. France and Britain punch Germany; Austria punches Bosnia and Herzegovina (which Russia and Serbia took personally); Germany punches Britain and France with one fist and Russia with the other. Russia throws a punch at Germany, but misses and nearly falls over. Japan calls from the other side of the room that it’s on Britain’s side, but stays there. Italy surprises everyone by punching Austria. Australia punches Turkey and gets punched back. There are no hard feelings, however, because Britain made Australia do it. France gets thrown through a plate-glass window, but gets back up and carries on fighting. Russia gets thrown through another one, gets knocked out, suffers brain damage, and wakes up with a complete personality change. Italy throws a punch at Austria and misses, but Austria falls over anyway. Italy raises both fists in the air and runs around the room chanting. America waits until Germany is about to fall over from sustained punching from Britain and France, then walks over and smashes it with a barstool and pretends it won the fight all by itself. By now all the chairs are broken and the big mirror over the bar is shattered. Britain, France and America agree that Germany threw the first punch, so the whole thing is Germany’s fault. While Germany is still unconscious, they go through its pockets, steal its wallet, and buy drinks for all their friends. And 17 million died.

Well in WW1 case, Russia was way weaker than you would expect, basically a (very populated) agrarian nation fighting industrial nations. Germany didn't totally invade Russia (as it didn't need to), but took a territory that contained 1/4th of the Russian population and 1/4th of its industry. So yeah, in some cases you can invade Russia. As opposed to that, people just underestimate how good was Russia in the early 1800s and during WW2, Napoleon and Hitler both attacked that country at a time in which they were powerful, and thus could use the tactical advantage that represented their huge and "extreme" territory to its full extent.

One comment on the assasination in Sarajevo. Today we know for sure, because all historical research shows that the assassin Gavrilo Princip can't in no way be called a South Slavic nationalist. He was a Serbian nationalist, a member of a six-man commando organized by Colonel Dmitrijevic, pseudonym Apis, head of Serbian military intelligence. The weapons they were equipped with (pistols and bombs converted from military grenades) came from the arsenals of the Serbian army. Dmitrijevic himself was already the main organizer of the coup d'etat in Serbia in 1903. As a result, the Serbian king Alexander and his wife and all members of the Obrenovic dynasty were overthrown and murdered, ending the more than 100-year-old conflict for the Serbian throne between the Obrenovic and Karađorđević dynasty. Everything indicates that the Serbian authorities knew about the attack on Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and Dmitrijevic himself informed the Russian military attaché in Belgrade, Colonel Artamanov, and the Russian envoy in Serbia, Count Nikolaj von Hartwig. They probably assured him that in the event that the Austro-Hungarian authorities found out who was actually behind the attack on the Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne, they would then present the situation to their superiors in Saint Petersburg so that it would appear that Austria-Hungary was looking for an excuse to destroy Serbia "Slavic Orthodox ally" of the Russian Empire. These facts were already discovered by Austro-Hungarian investigators in the summer of 1914 when they interrogated Princip and his four accomplices from the six-person group captured after the attack. They were fully disclosed in a public trial in the fall of 1914. The reason for the assasination was the fear that when Franz Ferdinand took the throne, he would start a reform policy of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in order to strengthen the element of the Habsburgs' South Slavic subjects (Slovenes and Croats). Such a policy, which Franz Ferdinand said loudly, that he would implement it after assuming the throne, could turn out to be a fatal blow to the plans to build "Big Serbia" and seize areas inhabited by Serbs in Croatia (Slavonia) and Vojvodina and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Especially that Austria-Hungary was much more attractive in terms of economy and civilization than Serbia. And in 1914, the ruler of Austria-Hungary, Emperor Franz Joseph I, was 84 years old, and it was clear that Franz Ferdinand's accession to the throne was closer than further. These facts were revealed at the trial. But of course, the First World War was already underway then, and it was all sold as Austrian propaganda. All the more so after 1918, the defeat and collapse of Austria-Hungary. Out of the group of six assasins, none survived the First World War. The same happened with Colonel Dmitrijevic. In 1917 he was suddenly accused of organizing a plot to assassinate the then Peter I King of Serbia. Brought to a secret Serbian military tribunal made up of trusted officers, he was swiftly found guilty, sentenced to death, and almost immediately put in front of a firing squad. Although the reasons for his execution aren't entirely clear, there are many indications that the aim was to get rid of the main organizer of the coup and slaughter in Belgrade in 1903 and the attack in Sarajevo in 1914. Perhaps he could have said too much about the ties to these events of the Serbian ruler Peter I from Karađorđević dynasty and other Serb politicians. Son and successor Peter I, Alexander, King of Yugoslavia from 1921 , will die in October 1934 in an assasination in Marseilles, France, organized by political opponents of Croatian and Macedonian nationalists with the support of external enemies, this time by the military intelligence of fascist Italy. Ironic. Interestingly, in the 1970s, historians of the then Yugoslavia officially confirmed that almost all the Austro-Hungarian results of the investigation were true But of course it was of historical importance then. Although as it turned out the idea of Yugoslavia these lies and conspiracies did not serve either after 1918 or after 1991. In both cases, as soon as the external circumstances ended, conflicts and wars began which brought misfortune to many people and largely exposed the illusion of the so-called "south - Slavic unity ". In 1914, and especially in 1918, no one wanted to admit that the direct cause of the greatest conflict so far in the history of mankind was the conspiracy of a Serbian colonel who in 1903 had already organized a coup d'état and slaughter, which then caused many governments and rulers, privately and publicly they believed that everything that happened in Belgrade is evidence, that Serbia is the country ruled by 40 ordinary robbers headed this time by the new Ali Baba - the new Serbian king Peter I, from the Karađorđević dynasty. However, I think that more than 100 years after this war, we no longer need to speak out.
