Worm lizards have the common name "lizard" though they aren't really lizards as they aren't classified in the same group as lizards - though, this could always change. Worm lizards are, instead, classified in their own group which is currently placed alongside snakes and lizards in the Squamata Order of reptiles. There are somewhere between 150 and 200 worm lizards species alive today. They get the common name "worm" not only because they live underground but also because they have ringed sections, called annuli, surrounding their bodies which allow them to move in an accordion-like manner much like a worm!
Scientific Name: Suborder - Amphisbaenia
Range: Africa, South America, Europe, parts of the Middle East, and North America
Size: 6 inches (15cm) to over two feet (61cm)
Diet: small invertebrates like ants and termites as well as small vertebrates like mice and voles for larger species
Lifespan: unknown

While traditional Linnaean taxonomy does classify squamates into 3 suborders (lizards, snakes, and amphisbaenians or worm-lizards), it has been agreed for a long time that this is phylogenetically incorrect. Instead, since some species traditionally considered lizards are more closely related to either worm-lizards or snakes than to other lizards, worm-lizards and snakes are within the lizards and should not be classified separately from them.

Exactly. Snakes are closer relatives to monitor lizards than tegus are, for example
@billyr2904
@billyr2904 Год назад
Amphisbaenia is no longer classified as a suborder and is now an unranked clade, because it turns out there closest relatives are lacertas and tegus.

I live in Florida now but most of my life we lived in Va. And in Virginia we found a couple of these types of creatures. We always called them worm snakes. I love that you chose to talk about these. So fascinating.

I wonder if this category of animal is something of an evolutionary intermediate between lizards and snakes.
@AnimalFactFiles
@AnimalFactFiles 3 года назад
They're still trying to figure that out! How worm lizard fit into the "tree of life" so to speak is a debated topic
@billyr2904
@billyr2904 Год назад
Leglessness evolved multiple separate times in the order squamata, that there's no one group of reptiles that have lost their limbs. Snakes are more closely related to iguanas and monitor lizards than they are to worm lizards.
@sikamaru666
@sikamaru666 3 года назад
They look so similar to caecilians. I guess caecilians are the amphibian worm lizards. So I guess you have legless lizards, worm lizards and snakes and apparently all evolved from lizards at different times.

Does the Eurasian Slow Worm fall into this category?
@AnimalFactFiles
@AnimalFactFiles 3 года назад
I'm pretty sure they're separate as slowworms are in infraorder Anguimorpha. I think this is part of where the classification becomes confusing, though, and has been a reason this is still debated

Amphisbaenian or worm-lizard. However, yes it sounds like amphibian, but it's a reptile.

I can’t do it. Well I could, but it wouldn’t be as good: 1: I am only like what, 10? 2: I can only record things off of my iPad 3: I am very shy, thus I don’t like projecting my voice much.
@AnimalFactFiles

@@theanimalshow6538 I'll tell you a secret: I'm *really* shy, too. And when I was ten I was even more shy. It's okay to be shy. And as for the other stuff, honestly it just takes practice. I know that sounds really boring, but it's true. At the same time, it's okay to change your mind and decide you don't want to do something later on down the road. When I started this channel it... wasn't great. And there are still things I change to this day. It's a process
