Worm lizards have the common name "lizard" though they aren't really lizards as they aren't classified in the same group as lizards - though, this could always change. Worm lizards are, instead, classified in their own group which is currently placed alongside snakes and lizards in the Squamata Order of reptiles. There are somewhere between 150 and 200 worm lizards species alive today. They get the common name "worm" not only because they live underground but also because they have ringed sections, called annuli, surrounding their bodies which allow them to move in an accordion-like manner much like a worm!
