THISSS I recently got into DR around 2020 (?) and I was not prepared for how toxic the fandom is. I was shocked too, like how is a fandom of a queer, POC show so hateful…? As someone who's been in kpop, jpop, thai idol-actor fandoms... yeah. Stalking is still a problem in Jpop idol world, but at least Japan as a whole is strict about following the unspoken rule of 'do not bother others'. There was a jpop idol group who cancelled several tour shows because the fans in the area were being disruptive when using public transport on the way to and from the concert. So stalker individuals still exist there since the law about stalking is as shitty as most countries, but you won't find crowds of 'fans' following and mobbing idols.

I feel like Gamers are definitely a tad bit more toxic than kpop fans. Kpop fans are delusional and care way too much about achievements. Gamers break their stuff, have way too many meltdowns, and can be very very vile. Anime fans are crazy, I don't think they are as crazy as the other two.

I had a majority of them call people tasteless because their preference over music styles is different. Then I was like, “What if my preference is some old school music? You call that tasteless?” That’s another reason why I took a big break from Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for years! I mean I listen to some modern pop for fun, but saying that it’s better after relying on award counts or marketing is a no-no NOT to modern pop fans but to us!

You are partly right, but you also have to see the side in which Taylor is one of the most hated artists or the one that has received the most hate in the pop and music industry, in general. Many of her criticisms of her are made with little respect or insulting and denigrating her. As a fan, many times I have seen completely valid criticism of Taylor (an example, the attempt to clean up her image by collaborating with Ice Spice), and despite the fact that she is someone I admire a lot, I have known how to respect them because they have been done with RESPECT, but I have seen many times that fans of, for example, Kanye West / Ye denigrate her, claiming that Kanye is better, and I think that you may think that one artist is better than another or you may like him more, but that is not why you go and discount another artist, since at the end of the day it is a matter of taste. In conclusion, the problem is part of certain swifties, who often don't even know how to control their fanaticism, but also fans of other artists or the press (although that last one is another story, for many years they tried to throw her off just for dating many boys) who often denigrate her, and her criticisms that are often completely valid, end up losing seriousness or meaning because they are clearly guided more by hatred than by objectivity I THINK I TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY, BUT IT IS A SUBJECT THAT I REALLY LOVE IT

You know there are toxic people in every Fandom, and people who defend celebrities are equally bad. I don't know why you have to associate yourself to the Fandom to listen to her music. You can just listen and enjoy her albums generally. Generally I've noticed that the fan accounts on yt are very mature in terms of this(literally everyone celebrated when she broke up with racist matty healy)

I mean some fandoms are definitely worse than others though, some fandoms also have way more terrible people in them compared to others, and therefore have a lot more toxic stuff happening in them, they're more parasocial, more needy etc, So yeah there are fandoms who have way more bad apples in them than average, and that constitutes them being "worse", Maybe it's because the toxic behavior is normalized, maybe because the fandom attracts bad people, it depends

If you choose two random fandoms and compare them to each other, how do you know which is the worse of the two? Do you do a deep dive into each fandom and study every issue that's occured and do a full blown comparison? It's easier to say the one you see more of is worse because you're more exposed to them. A fandom you rarely see in the first place probably isn't going to be the one you consider the "worse fandom". The smaller fandom or the fandom you personally don't see as often as the other could be the "worser" of the two but because you're not exposed to it as much as the other one, the other is considered the worse one.

I think 4chan users would have been a better place holder. While 4chan user also encapsulates other things besides gamer, I think its a more specific potent of the toxicity she was describing. Plus, there is a more clear documented history of all the shit they have done and organized. I believe a big chunk of gamergate was campaigned directly from 4chan anyways. To me, what makes them so bad, to which what she was sort of showing with her examples, is that 4chan users tend to just be extremely edgy. They are not afraid to spam and flood their victims with gore, porn, extremely racist shit, and whole bunch of other hurtful things. I've been on the tertiary of the Harry Potter fandom for a good 10 years. It is really nice that the days of people mindlessly praising these books Are over. People acted like the books were an intricate master piece because of the headcanons they made up that were inspired by tiny obscure details in potter world.

to be fair, have you seen the other nominations and winners in that category from previous years? they aren't beginners either, they have insane connections in the industry if you individually research them. her getting a nomination would be completely fair, she is also a beginner in the film Industry

Something I really like is how many kpop fans protect their idols right to privacy. It is a massive thing in army, the rule is don't approach BTS unless it is an official event army have been invited to. If they are just out doing their thing and you spot them, you pretend not to know them. Bit different from directioners who hacked airport security to stalk 1D back in the day. If some army did they the fandom would come down on them like a ton of bricks, its just not okay.

What's nuts is there are clearly full grown adults in the mix who also think like this. They freak me out the most. Fans in general have developed a sense of entitlement and as you said ownership to characters and scarily real people. Like when someone basically says you owe us access to your personal life because we made you famous.

i disagree, I find most of these people are in the mid 20s-30s, trying to re-live their teens by not maturing and being the worst possible person. It could also be said 'revenge' for bullying they may have faced in their teens. The internet can allow them to almost get away with the crap that wouldn't have in highschool
