Well done Sophie, that was full of real life sailing and u did a great job , Ryan isn't looking real well, perhaps his solo sail really burnt him out hope he gets that smile and energy back soon. Thanks for sharing 🇦🇺🌈🌞
Tip: Put a couple of shackles chain between the anchor and the swivel. This prevents breaking the swivel on the achor shaft. They are not designed for so match force. Have great sailing and always 4 inch water under the keel.
I found that you should put a few chain links between the anchor and swivel. The swivel isn't designed to take sideways tension ( as it can if swivel is attached directly to anchor.
Catamarans can be very uncomfortable in certain conditions. When rounding an island/headland, it's always wise to stay further offshore and avoid any clash between wind/swell/current/shallows/changes in the sea floor. When climbing a mountain on an island I have sometimes noticed a zone 1/2 mile wide where the water is far more turbulent.
Interesting video with some great visuals. I have never been seasick in thousands of mono hull miles, but came very close on a catamaran coming back from the outer barrier reef. OPB is the way to go. No marina fees, no repair costs and no weather worries.
Thanks Martin! It’s good to be back ☺️ We’ve worked A LOT in April and May, and it was nice not stressing ourselves too much with the videos. Nice to see you here again! 🥰
Glad to see your still getting it, watched M Falcon install some of Ryan's batteries yesterday without a hitch, so great Engineering. Back in 1975 the Captain & his wife bought me a fine meal at a fine restaurant in English harbor. As a peon suckered me in to signing up for one more year. Am pretty smart, a year later in Bermuda realized we were not going through the Panama canal & quit, that Engine room job.
Just watched your great video and I was very surprised at how much the cat was rolling and pitching. I thought they were supposed to be much more stable than a monohull.
Hey guys. So glad you guys are doing great. Just read an article on Yahoo News about you guys. Great job. And you guys are so right. The highs are too high to worry about the lows. Fair winds.
I have never seen the point of anchor swivels? All they do as you correctly pointed out, is add a potential point of failure to the anchoring system and provide little or no benefits in return. If you have an anchor swivel, I strongly recommend that you remove it and replace it with the appropriately sized bow shackle installed the right way. If you really must use a swivel, do not connect it directly to the anchor, instead use a short length of chain between the anchor and the swivel.
OPB. Great episode. Content was spot on with a great subject and good humour. Good choice of music that complements the video mood. I suspect that your videos are 6 weeks or more behind as we met you in Jolly Harbour a couple months ago. Ryan: I checked out your Dakota Lithium batteries and they sound very good. A great website. Don’t get to stresses over work. You guys are in the Caribbean. “Be happy”
Yes, we are about six weeks behind for now, but we will be catching up very quickly, as we spent most of our days in March, April and May working a lot and didn’t film that much. We should be back to almost real time in four weeks 😅 Right as I am typing this, we left Bermuda for Nova Scotia. We are so excited to make it to Canada, finally! Say hi to Gisele from us 🥰
That looks a good anchor (for that size of boat). As to the chain, it looks like 5/16" or 3/8" galvanized, which should be good, for what were calm conditions. Would ask where they bought their chain? It should ideally be stamped "HS" (high strength). Have heard of some very inferior, cheap Chinese chain getting put on boats with unfortunate consequences. This could have led to the loss of the entire boat so count yourselves very fortunate.
When getting anchor chain for my last boat boughtnin the USA, tbh, I was not At All Impressed with any of the Chain or Galvanising I Saw in any of the Chandlers, withbAll,of it looking like Cheap, Weak Chinese Crap. so I started looking for American Chain Suppliers with Anerican Steel and Anerican Galvanising, and found some Certified very high quality From a Trucking Suppliers, so ordered enough for an all chain rode. When it was delivered, its very high quality and excellent Galvanising was so good, the Boatyard asked ne for details of the supplier. It worked a charm with the strains of powerful Tornadoes. 👍🙂🇬🇧🏴🇺🇲
That was really fun! Crazy set of events. Was reloading the sail into the boom pretty difficult? Seems like that would be a thing. Sounds like the owners were in really good spirits about the whole thing :) Thanks for another fun episode! F
I really wanted more about the anchor chain breaking. From what I heard, it wasn't under excess load (ie, wasn't holding u in place in a gale on a lee shore) - it was under normal steady operating load, and no shock loads. Did u find iether pc of the brocken chain-link? Was the chain a cheap imported brand from China - or from proof-tested stock? How old was it? So many questions. For me, if that chain broke under 'normal' use, there could be no thought of it ever being put back on the boat. However expensive chain is, it's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy ...
First time I see a catamaran with in-mast. Do they like it? We like ours A LOT!! Also our main sail ripped like that once on a passage. My handy Sailrite saved the day and a lot of 🤑 Nice video btw 👍
Chain. Always insist on Certified high quality Calibrated Chain with each link stamped, and zguaranteed NOT to be Chinese. There's very good Italian Chain, which is one among only a few makers that are fit for purpose. watch the Galvanising of chain abd anchor, and get them regalvanised before they start rusting, which is not that expensive, and you are set up for more reliable years of use.
Lol, Sopihe! You are the best! I left you while you crossed the Atlantic eastwards, you had a shitty time, and I was too. Thinking I had enough with my own shit, I unsubcribed you. So satisfying to see that you still can handle shitty things with humor. ;-) I´m now back as a subscriber. Btw, I hope Ryan recover from the shit he had to deal with westwards the Atlantic. That was real heavy shit, not any easy task to overcome. :-/
Van Morrison did not approve this! We were born before the wind Also, younger than the sun 'Ere the bonnie boat was won As we sailed into the mystic And when the mainsail became torn We did not morn But when the anchor chain parted The entire crew became broken hearted As we sailed into the mystic But as we entered the harbor We had no fear For the Bar was near As we sailed into the mystic
I have been missing quite a few of these lately. My bad. Love the boat name and this version of the song Into the Mystic. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hQ_ccgOkJdI.html and no I have no connection with them. You have both come a long way from the noobs I started following a year ago. I think you got this. I prefer your boat btw. I don't trust cats. Just me. Happy trails.
I know… sometimes I look back at where we were four years ago, and I can’t believe how much we’ve done 😳 we wrote a 350 pages script on how to get started in the sailing life, and we’ve looked back at everything that happened since we first left. Crazy! We’re actually on our way to Canada as I write this and we plan on sailing to Quebec in 2023 :)
