I really liked how this video wasn’t “OMG, never use these color combos, they’re hideous” but “If you like these colors, here’s how to elevate them to something that looks really on trend and professional”.
This whole craze for gray it is very hard to get it to work without it being depressing and looking like the inside of a battleship very informative video thank you happy holidays
Yes! It's not talked about a lot, but I heard it mentioned in a graphic design video (if I'm understanding saturation correctly). He was looking at a design that wasn't really working and took all the colors out. There was no high contrast between white and black. Was all similar grey colors, so he said that's why design wasn't working.
@@libertyjayne I learned to do this when I was majoring in graphic design -- removing the colors to make sure that the design still looks good when black and white -- but to make sure that the design is still accessible for people who are color blind.
OMG, you brought back some of my worst decorating days. When I first got married, mind you I am talking about the 60’s. I had a dark fake wood bedroom set that had the headboard and night stands trim in red velvet. Thinking I was so cool my first apartment I got heavy dark velvet red curtains, red rug and to sophisticated the look chandelier inspired lamps in red. To make it worst my brother in law said my bedroom looked like a brothel. Now when I think back, what was I thinking. Horrible, simply horrendous. But to my defense pre you tube videos
😮 That's the scariest story I've ever heard🤣 OK I lied you know back in the day it looked good but what can we really do about times changing besides saying what was I thinking😜
Well, look at it this way; I'll bet that this experience as a very young woman actually propelled you into being far more creative, stylish and aesthetically -minded in your personal style in dress as well as interior design than you may have been otherwise.
I'm so sorry but I was also thinking 'brothel' just from your description haha. But hey it's better and a lot more fun to take a risk and maybe make some decorating mistakes than to always play it safe with a boring neutral look. Personally I'd choose 'brothel' over beige any day!
You used more and better words to describe what’s going on in design than anyone I have ever seen on RU-vid. I’m excited to be subscribed and look forward to watching your videos.
I’ve heard it before. That term or another word used in its place. It’s interesting to learn about this stuff even though it’s not something I entirely understand.
The turquoise and brown took off in 2006 when Vera Bradley's bag print became popular, they did have a lot of bridge colors in that pattern. Thank you again for breaking down the details and sharpening my eye for design.
I think I liked that co,or combo for about five minutes, and for some reason, I just went off it. I like to see the pretty interior designing done with it, sometimes I like it, sometimes i don’t, but it was just a combo I wouldn’t do. I think it’s because certain shades of pink and turquoise that people paint their houses with literally make me sick and want to throw up. Whenever I see a pink house, I have to turn my head away until I’m past it. I haven’t seen any turquoise houses in years, thankfully, but I think that’s why I’m not really into turquoise anything in interior design other than a vase or a small rug, nothing BIG. 😄
Baiyina, your spirit is so dynamic, honest, and forward flowing and the bonus is your dope style and insight. You’re as cheerful as a morning mimosa Thank you!
When my late, ex-mother in law moved from Florida to Kansas City, she moved into a brand new condo subdivision, and my ex-sister in law and her picked out all the finishing touches, and that included mauve carpeting ALL over the house, including the bathroom. It was the 80’s. My ex and I found a condo for rent across the way, so close we could holler across the front porches at each other. Our entire condo luckily had a strange mustardy gold browny beige carpeting all over. It wasn’t the prettiest color, and even though I liked the color mauve, I just didn’t want it as wall to wall, every room in mauve carpeting.
The worst I was ever guilty of was the “Regal” combo of Wine/burgundy, royal blue, emerald green and gold. It was heavy and made the rooms look small, old and heavy.
When I was in 9th grade, I let a friend talk me into taking an Art class instead of Foods and then she ended up taking the Foods class. I’m not the least bit artistic even though my dad and two brothers are, one even worked at Hallmark as an artist, but I’ll always remember my art teacher telling us to look at things differently, and she even mentioned rocks how just superficially, they look like one color but if you look at them more closely, you’ll see there’s all sorts of colors in that one rock. After that, whenever we went to the lake to canoe and swim or fish, whenever I picked up rocks, I looked at them with a new perspective and didn’t take them for granted like I used to.
I actually hate the grey-on-grey variant that is currently raging. I may have been intrigued for "a minute," but I, now, find it unnatural and hideous.
@@tamboogie2 , I so agree with you on that, too. And especially a white-on-white kitchen. When I walk into my kitchen, I want to see spices, warmth, nature -- those kinds of colors. I do not want to see lack of color that makes me think, "Where's my Lysol wipes." I, also, hate the Open Concept, live-in-your-kitchen designs that designers and builders are telling us is paramount for home worth. Seriously, in a country populated by the super fat, where-the-food-is has been deemed the best social gathering spot in a home, and must be visible from ALL points of the home. I hate that so much! "The best" gathering room in a home need not be the kitchen. Bring back if not closed kitchens, semi-closed kitchens. Just my thoughts
I love your explanations and photos for further illustrations of your point. You're my new favorite designer, and you're helping me spruce up and update my own home, thank you!
I really like the way you approached each color combination. I like that you gave suggestions for making it work. Really useful helpful video. Thank you.
OMG yes- I was an art major and people don't talk enough about varying the saturation, value and intensity of colors in a room! You need a good mix or your eyes get tired.
Swede here! I don't know if it's a colour combination in that sense but a lot of Swedish homes are just grey grey and more grey. I feel like it's very cold if it's not done properly and they just look unpersonal. Like something out of a magazine, no one is meant to live there!
It can be very cold, so maybe adding a few wooden pieces mixed in there or just wood furniture would warm it up have you tried Sharon she's so fabulous she has great ideas of how to warm up a gray living room check her living room out
@@purpleflowers149 Gray and brown: groundbreaking! not really, i was being sarcastic a la The Devil Wears Prada. How about some yellow? mustard? some red accents? orange instead?
OMG, love this video! Color is hard for me, so I appreciate you breaking it down. I had no idea people like to turquoise and brown or red and black. I did red and black in my bedroom (middle school and high school) and it was quite harsh. Let’s just say I can never go back to that. Yet with the professionally done rooms you posted I can see how it could be beautiful.
I painted my MBR a color I love - a kind of dark blue spruce. But something’s off. This video has me thinking I need to add tons of white etc. to see if I can get it to work!! Otherwise it’s mire painting in January!
Great original and throught-provoking content as always! I think you hit on a point with the first colour combo, something that often bothers me in design. That is, when the colours are too simple and saturated, without any variation in between. You really helped me put a finger on what makes the balance work or not.
A black outfit with gold(en) accessories/jewelry can look very elegant. especially when the jewelry is minimal - just a thin necklace or a brooch and maybe a thin bracelet or ring. but in interior design... can be overpowering or depressing. or both.
I always appreciate your insight. I actually use black and ivory throughout my home with red accents and have utilized red and black in patterns, just as you described, without knowing why it works. I gained so much information with this video. Thank you. Please do a video on how to use gray. My husband bought two beautiful sumptuous, gray, leather chesterfield sofas and I don’t know how to best use them because I’m not a gray girl. Ugh! Thx again! 🥰🥰
This channel is such a gem. Thank you! I am just now exiting my turquoise phase, though it's still my favorite color in the world it looks dated with all my dark brown furniture. I'm currently looking for a paint color to better accent the pieces.
I really like how you explained the concepts and then provided solutions that are very good. I made the mistake with the red and black study, and I really hate it.
I have a red and black kitchen. I love it! Red is the dominant and I have silver or white that is the bridge. It looks so fresh, clean and sophisticated. Add in the red cookware with the silver and I love being in my kitchen!!!
Just randomly stumbled across your channel. I'm not a decorator. Just a typical random dude who doesn't care much about the topic of color and decorating. But, your scientific break downs of color and their comparison /contrast really is intriguing. Very valuable info! Also, I never considered how styles date over time. Specifically colors as well. I'm a new subscriber and will continue learning this topic. Thank you.
I love this video!! So much good advice! I feel like I have a good eye for color and design, but hearing you spell things out with words and pictures helps me understand why I instinctually often didn't like these combos.
These are GREAT pointers! I have seen this over-saturation before and couldn’t put my finger on what was wrong. I got it when you said you need a “bridge” and to vary the hue. Thx
I used to check out your videos a while back before I understood the importance of subscribing. I recently stumbled on your channel again and I am so glad you are still at it and delivering great content. Thanks for posting!
Great video....it's kinda a thing you see and instinctively think those colours don't work but you don't have the expertise to understand why....great to see the examples you gave of how these colour combos CAN work...would love another video on this subject....also ready made curtains and some bedding comes in some colours that are really garish.
I'm with you regarding saturation and introducing bridge colors and pattern--but neutrals-- ***shudder*** Neutrals stress me out--even when they're well done and use in a thoughtfully put together room. I look at it and I can't breathe and just want to RUN. I'll be glad when the neutral craze runs its course and takes a backseat to colors that have some life to them.
Thank you! This helped me a lot. I’m trying to set up my RU-vid video filming space and was getting overwhelmed with the decor. New subscriber here! ♥️
So beautiful video 😍😍♥️ Love that u put photos ,the problem & how to fix it 🙏🏻 so informative . Thank u so much for sharing. Glad I found your channel 🥰
OMG! sounds like something i'd like. XDD I recently started to like sage/muted hues of green.. and rust color is ... ok i guess. i prefer copper instead XD Though personally, i'd make a mix and match of styles and items and not over-use one of them. ... However, i'd have to keep in mind my partner's likes/dislikes and asthma/allergies and have something minimalistic. ;p
I'm just changing over to sage greens, creams with touches of muted pumpkin and paprika. Working very hard not to over do the 'spices'. You are correct that if you over do it then you end up with dank and depressing which I do not want.
This is brilliant! The turquoise and brown hit haarrrdd. That wat like, the entire colour scheme in my grandparents new home and it was painful to see. I love the suggestions to freshen it up!
Red gives me nightmares. Yeah, turquoise is too much for me too - I tried that in my 20s. I like neutrals as they are restful to the brain...but I agree what you said about it in having variations and texture. Color is personal choice as we have associations with each color in our memory and so you can't say this color is not good for anyone. Each color is like an emotion and brings out either feelings of serenity or passion or aversion so be careful in the choice of applying bright colors to your walls. I have found if I want a darker color maybe to one wall will be enough and not the whole room.
I'm just changing over to sage greens, creams with touches of muted pumpkin and paprika. I'd love to see your take on these colors and it would be very helpful if you could share some of your favorite colors for walls in your video's. Perhaps you have...I'm new here and getting caught up! I love your videos!
My dining room has dark teal walls and (red-toned) walnut flooring, with gold/orange and black accents (including a large art deco print). I was inspired by pictures very similar to what you showed. In the guest room, I used a much more muted version of that color combo: a desaturated seafoam and brass color scheme in an otherwise beige room. The inspiration was the colors of verdigris to compliment the art nouveau print in that room. What about the pink-purple combination that dominates decorating for girls' rooms? I'd love to hear how you'd work with that. Great series!
I would like to hear your thoughts on the modern take of orange and pink together that I'm seeing. Also, peach and any other color. Peach and green, peach and blue, ...
My current apt has teal/turquoise as my accent. I combined it with lots of white and light grey/silver with medium hardwood floor. LOVE IT! For my new home I'm deciding on a "happy" color for a white/grey/brown/black palette. I want to use my traditional African decor pieces (black + brown + white). I'm thinking mustard yellow or forest green. Or both ☺ It would be a change since I have been more into jewel than warm tones.
You are amazing. You re the only decorator on RU-vid with whom I never disagree and I always learn something as well. Also how do you get prettier and younger looking as you age?
Oh my, I have a brown and turquoise room Lol. My grandkids fight over the OTHER rooms. They said the brown and turquoise room isn’t “comfortable “. I just found your channel and am enjoying the short insightful videos 👍
I have just discovered you and am seriously happy to hear all of your tips and information. So interesting, and beautifully explained. Thank you! (And THANK YOU for NOT peppering your speech with "kinda, sorta very, like, you know what I mean?" which I keep running into and it makes me ill).
OKAY!! when you said my two of my foiur favorite colors that i loved (red, black gold and blue) i screamed at my computer "WHAT DA HEYELL IS WRONG WITH BLACK AND RED?? THOSE ARE MY PRIMARY COLORS IN MY APARTMENT!" you broke it down with the white, and grey. so i agree with you. black and red are strong, dominant colors so yeah it has to be broken up by a soft neutral color. i truly agree with you! i use a lot of Asian flava in accessories.
Yes to all those you mentioned as well as a few of those mentioned below in the comments. I’ll add one more, mint green and coral. I dated a guy who had a condo in FL and he bought it furnished, guess what the theme was? Mint and coral seashells, sea horses and crabs etc. HATED it! That goes for all the bridesmaid’s dresses I was forced to wear in these colors, back in the 80’s!
Thanks for a great video. I've never understood black and red when we have so many other colors! Merry Christmas. Bet you are glad to be out of crazy town this year. :)
Another color I can't stand is Brown and burgundy you are right these colors seem dated I guess you just got to know the strategy of mixing the colors but most of my co-workers I talk to always runs to these colors, I'm like geez Louise explore other options, and what really makes me mad is they try to tell me to get these colors, but to each their own if they want to stay in the 80s and 90s let them be, I must say all designers or interior decorators are not the same, I do follow a few designers/decorators who also has given me tips on decor, I do remember you saying something about vertical blinds being dated and a lot of people don't know this and still have this in their home but to each their own maybe they can't afford other options, another thing is I have a lot of great decor ideas however when they come to my home they end up copying my ideas so now when I go to their home they home look just like mine instead of being unique on their own and this is so sad, oh one more thing I noticed a lot of comments on people having rhinestones and mirrors however when I look at my co-workers homes they don't got none of this stuff and they homes it's just an old school wooden cocktail tables or a glass cocktail tables just very old school no mirrors though it's nothing wrong with the little bling just don't overdo it, a lot of women are doing glam because they like it and some are doing it out of competition if you notice silver and gray is in right now including with the celebrities it's saying I'm a diva but some I love these folks homes who claim it's glam is not really glam because you got Glam and then you got tacky and I don't say nothing but in my mind I'm thinking this is ratchet I do have a few Glam pieces matter of fact I prefer rustic glam because all Glam is just cold to me it's not family friendly it's more for a living room or when you have company only room not for everyday living because when you look around that mirrored cocktail table or dining room table May crack and then you're going to be pissed 😆
Great video! I really hate the bold blue and sunshine yellow look popular in the 90s! I remember my Mum painting her walls both colours for opposite sides of the room lol 🤮
