I would have to assume a number of people were innocent. I guess it was like how people can look at a youtube video of a guy tripping and falling now and laugh, these people just enjoyed suffering. The ancient Greeks used "the copper bull". It was a hollow copper bull and the person would get inside to be roasted to death by a fire underneath the bull. But the worst part was that the bull's mouth had a system of whistles in it so the sound if the persons shrieks were the sound of an angry bull! I'm glad I didn't live in those times!

Those punishments in the past were extreme to the level where they served no real purpose and ended up detrimental to society (murder and pickpocketing got you the exact same death penalty, so might as well stick to murder!) and thankfully England moved beyond that. Sadly, right now they're overcompensating and being far too nice to the point where it's once again detrimental to society.
