I watched this game live. Honestly, the most biased officiating I have ever seen in all the years I have watched hockey. A testament to the Canadians that they still won.
I remember that game...correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there were 8 or 10 straight penalties against the Canadian women's team. There were 2 or 3 instances they were 2 women short. That ref was pressured/paid off to give many penalties to the Canadians.
happydragon5077 An American woman refereed that game after the Canadian squad okayed the Olympic committee's choice. Canada probably could have insisted on a neutral referee but chose to go with the American, likely because European women's officiating was known to be pretty incompetent.
If it wasn't for the ref that game would have been ten nothing. The US had more pp time than even strength. Every time the game was 5 on 5 Canada completely dominated play.
@KoivuTheHab Obviously an exaggeration for comedic effect. 13 Canadian penalties against 4 U.S.A. penalties and literally every article written about the game not by an American noted that so many of these penalties were not warranted at all.
We aren't Yanks. It isn't the fuckin 1700's anymore and I don't think there are a lot of us who currently play baseball for the New York Yankees. If you want to continue to generalize a whole country based on what some of our people did, then I hope you don't mind me calling you all maple-syrup drinkin canooks eh? It's a hockey game. Calm the fuck down.
I still remember Hayley Wickenheiser's fiery speech after the game. How the officiating was so obviously atrocious and that the Americans laid our flag on their dressing room floor. But our Canadian ladies still won!
Ya, the video doesn't really do that statement justice. I remember watching this game, it looked rigged. So many phantom calls against Canada. It should be up there with worst reffing in history.
WhatWereTheyThinking well considering the ref was banned from officiating international tournaments again for all the penalties called on canada it makes sense. There was like 2 penalties against the US
while i dont agree with alot of the comments made here. i also dont agree with most of the penalties called in that game. like that tripping call near the start of the video, that was just blatant blindness. and alot of the other penalties i couldnt hardly see in the video, but i watched it on the day it aired. I am an objective american. The canadian womens team were just better that year. Regardless of all the penalties forced on them.
Bryan Adams then you probably live in fucking Florida and sing songs by the sea shores and do your fuckin nails well we Canadiens fuckin demolish all the us teams and play fair and hit the gym keep wearing your damn sun glasses wimp
@@derekgravel6969 that was quite rude. Hope you grew up in the last 4 years! I watched this game live and yes the reffing was TERRIBLE but regardless, this comment was quite a bit worse!
its a fine line between incompetence and outright cheating...this is a tough one...cheating as in 1972 basketball or incompetence as in 2012 women's soccer, this hockey ref is a little of both, definitely incompetent and perhaps overwhelmed by the situation. .perhaps an NHL referee should have been used ,luckily the team being cheated won
I certainly remember watching that game and the American ref who did everything in her power to help USA win on their home turf. As a long time hockey fan Ive seen more than my fair share of biased officiating in international hockey but nothing like that game. 11 penalties called against Canada 8 successive powerplays in a row including two 5 on 3's
Are you joking? The empty net shot that bounced off the post was caused by the ref. If the ref was not there then the Canadian D would have kept it in the zone. Rewatch the replay buddy.
The bottom line is that you'd have to be blind or in denial not to realize what was going on with the referring in that game. As an American, it was embarrassing to watch. We don't need refs like this in sports, and with wins both before & after that game shows the American woman's hockey team sure doesn't need the refs help to win.
More Americans voted against trump than for him but because of the silly way our election system works he won. But even if every single american supported trump that doesn't mean that you should judge them. There are players on my hockey team who supported trump but that doesn't mean that I treat them any differently to my other teammates.
DannyOG you can't defend Americans for this election you elected somebody who is actually now supposed to be the embodiment of all Americans and that how I see all Americans now
Canada has 1/10th the population of usa too! That means the usa should have 10 times better of a team and should score 10 goals for every 1 that we do, but they dont...Canada rocks!
I watched this game live with some buddies and we were all infuriated by the refereeing in this game. It still upsets me some even to this day whenever it happens to come to mind. The Canadian women were shorthanded for practically half the game it seemed. Who the hell were the IDIOTS that decided to allow a U.S. referee to officiate this game, and why wasn't she replaced after the first period when it became so apparent that she was doing everything she could to help the U.S. team win? Absolutely ludicrous, and hopefully nothing like that will ever be allowed to happen again. Justifiably the Canadian women won in spite of it all. I don't know what happened to that U.S. bitch but I hope she was banned from refereeing ever again. The referee was on the U.S. teams side, but GOD was on the Canadian teams side eh.
And my last topic..I play triple A here in Ontario and we have NEVER lost to an american team at a tournament. I think we're something like 15-0 against American teams. (I've only been with the team for 1 year.)
I remember Pat Quinn saying this game was the best coaching he’d seen in his life - Danièle Sauvageau did an incredible job in setting the calm, focused tone for her players to play off of.
I remember this game, they called an offside when a Canadian picked up the puck in the neutral zone and skated in on a break away, I just laughed out loud
Man... I was only 3 years old when this was played, but the Ref's favouritism infuriates me as a hockey player who has played in high school and had things like this bullshit called against us becuase the Ref was alumni to the other team
i watched the game & the ref totally ruined that game, even with all the cheating by the ref, the usa still lost, if i was american player the ref would of pissed me off probably would of hit her she just made them look foolish, what an embarressment, thats worse than badminton in asia
It was Canada vs Stacey Livingston. I watched it live and then CBC replayed the game at midnight. Still as sweet watching it the second time. And Stacey Livingston? She's now the Supervisor of Officials for the Women's WC and the Olympics.
In the 02 womens game the penalty minutes were 26-8. I think the title of worst reffing ever belongs to the 1972 summit series, game 6. The west german ref called 31 pim against Canada to the Soviets 4.
I have to wonder if there was any kind of investigation into what had to be the most incompetent reffing in hockey history. She was worse than the east German guy in 1972.
This U.S. team in that game decided to draw upon the almighty soccer gods and while invoking Das Boot, screamed DIVE DIVE DIVE at every opportunity. And it almost worked. A young Julie Chiu saw this happening and decided that it was far better to play with class and be awesome and lose than try and embarrass the refs any time anyone got near them, Guess who got one of the biggest cheers during the medal presentations in Vancouver.
Let's see what the US has. Football. The NFL is made up by 99% Americans. Basketball. The NBA is made up by 80% Americans. Baseball. 65% of the players are Americans and 27% are from around Mexico. So the sports are mainly played by the US. Hockey? Well that's different. You have multiple powerhouse teams, so you actually have excitement. Canada and Russia are the top teams. Then you have the US, Sweden, Czech Republic and Finland as more top teams. After there's Switzerland and Slovakia. And
@hampzuz That's SO BS!! Usually our refs are, if ANYTHING, "congenial". BUT THAT game was played in the STATES! NOT Canada! As Female hockey players, we appreciate, AND respect the European game.! No difference. With the women's game, the only difference is, it that in Canada, we have a WAY bigger participation rate! Can you imagine if the Russians "got on board"?? My city:75,000. Womens league=300. Girls league:250. Girls playing in "boys" leagues? 30-ish?
@crazyperson3245: "hampzuz" talks bitter towards Canada but at least we walked away with a silver medal last year. I wouldn't be surprised if they blamed Canada because Sweden lost to Russia in that semi final game. Robin Lehner (Swedish goalie) actually went as far as blaming Canada for a Russian goal that was scored because of what he thought was a miscall by a linesman. I'd also like to point out that that linesman was American.
Sorry, you young folks don't know this is not the worst reffing in history, im young but my dad told me everything that happened in 1972. My dad was in moscow luzhniki ice palace during game 8, the soviets picked one of the biased referee clearly to call penalties after penalties of team canada, During few minutes soviets are already on the power play canada down 2 guys mahovlich. My dads mom had a ticket to go but she stayed here in canada where it was safe
@SelfAccountable thats a bit general dont you think? And the whole college statement is kinda, well, pointless. Everyone knows the U.S has bigger, better more expensive colleges than Canada, so why wouldnt these talented women play wher they can get a free education at a more prestigious school, cause its not like a woman's hockey career will pay the bills till you die. There is no high standard womans version of the CHL or equivalent league, so the closest thing is college.
@SelfAccountable hmmmm, you know the EXACT same thing can be said about young american hockey players? they call come to canada to learn :D personally, i dont care about womens hockey half as much as i do mens, but i guess i can say thanks to the united states, as they helped us win in 2010, my only question, is if its "your" countries training that makes canadians so good at hockey, why didnt americans get gold?
Americans are way to competitive for their own good. Im american and this is absolute bullshit reffing. Theres no way america can compete with other northern countries im sure we cheated to get to the gold metal match, as hockey has too low of a fan base to encourage people to actually play the sport much. We are not as bad as other countries think of us, but we NEVER admit we're wrong without a fight
@TheSportsfan102 And let me guess. The American Women Gymnasts would be "The Bull Sharks"? LOL. But on a serious note, the only reason why U.S. Women's Gymnastics has really excelled since Mary Lou Retton was because of our Coach Bela Karolyi. Bela Karolyi was the actual Romanian Coach when Nadia Commaneci won those Gold Medals. And Nadia would never go anywhere without him, she wouldn't let anyone else coach her! Now that he's retired, His Wife has taken over, and she's carrying on.
@TheSportsfan102 I don't know how else to put it. But let me explain it to you in plain, simple English. You, Canada in General, dominate the Winter. And we, meaning the United States, dominate the Summer in terms of sports. Hockey, Luge(Shuffleboard to us Americans), Ice Skating, Skiing are your sports. Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, and Track and Field is where we have the edge over you Canadians. So you won the Gold Medals in Hockey. BIG DEAL! It's like us taking Gold in Basketball.
@coolguy12333 What happened?? All your comments got removed and yes I know James Naismith helped invent basketball in 1891 in Springfield, MA USA I think we established that. Oh and hockey was invented in 1850 by British Soldiers who were stationed in Nova Scotia. That's where Canadians got the game and later modified it to add some more rules, just as Americans did to basketball.
@coolguy12333 Wasn't it an american college that asked Naismith to assist them in creating basketball? I mean different countries help create things for other countries it's just the way of the world. Step out of your ethnocentric ways your just another reason the world is the way it is with not wanting to accept other countries. I mean what would Canada do if Britain hadn't brought them Ice Hockey. I'm not sure what's with Canadians like you who are so discriminative of other nationalities
@RADDEC40 it can look damning but there are three factors as play. First is for the the athletes every game/event is a home game. There is a reason it is called home ice advantage because the crowd cheers for their country. Second is that there is slight diffrenteces in every track/rink/trail/whatever and to be able to practice on the rink that will play on is a benifit. Thrid is what you are alluding to and that is bias but notice that Canada had more penalties than USA this year...
lol this post makes me laugh Tells Canadians to get some humility after throwing comments out like "nice losing 8 straight before getting lucky as hell" and "lucky goals". You may be knowledgeable when it comes to baseball being from St Louis, but if you were a real hockey fan you'd know the goals Canada scored were just a result of hard work and making their own breaks This game was a joke. The ref was an idiot. I think it was 8 straight penalties at one point. Pathetic.
Alright you're obviously missing my point and taking this way to much to heart. Let me make myself more clear. I am in no way undermining mens hockey, I'm saying the NHL has gotten lazy, boring and slow. Now junior hockey is great, I like agression as much as the next person and all Im saying is without all the agression in womens hockey its easy to appreciate the other skills they show. I in no way insulted mens hockey, your the one attacking womens hockey. Thank you
Woah, just like the whole "omg us americans must all be cheaters" comment you made, you're taking what I said out of context. I never said mens hockey was all checking I said womens hockey has toned down the agression enough to appreciate the talents they possess with the passing, game plays and accuracy of their game. I never once said the mens game was all hitting and checking you misunderstood. But I did say the NHL has become a bore because their game has gotten slow.
Well actually, I think womens hockey is great =] It's more brain than bron, the women don't need to hit to show their real talents they can play a clean game and show their true skill with stick handling passing and so on, thats more than I can say for the NHL which I'm sure we can all agree has become a bore since the lockout. Second of all as a Canadian, I don't think all Americans are cheaters nor do I think that's what this video is saying so calm down eh? =]
Women's hockey counts because they're athletes who are better at this than probably every single guy who posted in here. Anyone here represented their country internationally like this? Anyone? No? HAHA! That ref was biased and a disgrace; USA doesn't need to win that way, it was just her being stupid and not the team. Anyone sensible saw that. Canada kicks ass at hockey and I'm proud of our girls who won more gold than our big, bad, NHL men's teams. You go girls, Canada owns at hockey!
first off, many places in Canada, unlike what you may think, such as where I live, don't even get cold enough in winter to build ice rinks. Also, if it doesn't snow in half the USA, they should still have 2500 ice rinks with 5 times the people playing on them therefore 5 times more of a chance of getting good players. But of course that's not the case since USA sucks shit at hockey!
Really? Have you EVER watched a competitive soccer game in your ENTIRE life?? 6second rule? NEVER seen , either called, NOR warned. My daughter played competitive soccer in Ontario, and Michigan.. Seen lots of physicality, but never that call... Whatevs... we still won the bronze.... (without homies)
@Potts132 O.K. then. But let me ask you this question. Did the Russians do away with the Hammer and Sickle in 1991 when the Soviet Union was broken up into 11 Different Nations? Once upon a time, my country was a part of that Soviet Union as well. But the fact that we practiced our own religion made us comfortable..
@sk8r4lyf6969 The reason why the team from Montreal call themselves "Canadiens" is because it is the French word for Canadians. Being that Quebec is the only part of Canada that is French(I could be wrong), and Montreal being in Quebec, that is why the Canadiens call themselves :The Montreal Canadiens".
I take it you didn't actually watch this game. It was unbelievable. I've talked to many Americans who said the ref tried to win the game for the Americans. No country should ever have a game reffed by a fellow countryman in the first place, especially if she's incompetent. Despite the home ref, Canada still won.
Wow! You're correct about the refereeing being bad. Canada got every break. Unbelievable. Can't we just get along as neighbors. Stop you're petty jealousy. You're still pissed that we had the cahones to take our independence from John Bull and not wait another hundred and fifty years until they "granted" it to us.
...it's true...the peace thing. I live in a small community in saskatchewan. when i first moved to canada the city was so nice. not much crime. but when the city grew in the last 10 years all of a sudden this city has highest crime per capita. And there's many places i would have trusted 10 years ago that i no longer trust now.
wrong, if Canada has 500 frozen ponds and ice rinks, than using my logic, USA should have 5000. The fact that we have 500 times more doesnt mean we should have better players, it means we are exceeding the US, which is very hard to do for the fact that we have 1/10th the population. The US doesn't dominate sports neraly as much as they should for their population.
how can you as an american hockey supporter chirp canadians .... obviously we train in the states and we play on your hockey teams , but that doesn't take away from the fact that we ARE canadian and are better hockey players i'm talking about men , not women LOL
@SelfAccountable oh and just to be super clear, not all women go to american colleges. And it's not pathetic, we created it, we're the best at it, and have put out the best players, regardless of gender or where they were trained, and i don't think you can argue the latter.
Haha. I love how the canadiens have the stomach to complain about the reffing. Thats nothing but hilarious. The country that ALWAYS gets the refs on their side, with or without complaining, whining, cheap shots and so forth. Thats, as I said, nothing but hilarious.
uhhhh... canada got more golds then the americans. it doesnt matter how much silver or bronze you get, its how much gold you got. you dont go to the olympics to win silver of bronze, you go there to win gold and be number 1 not 2 or 3. bcause if you aint number 1, then your not the winner.
Guys you should shut up about how the ref were against Team Canada. JWC final Canada - Sweden. Two or three really ugly tackles on the GOALIE. The ref did NOTHING. Just like those wimpy Swedish players. Only Victor Hedman tried to do something and stod up for his team.
I take it you never saw the game, I watched it, this is the worst officiated game ever. The penalties on Canada were ridiculous. Also because of this game, the refs for the games in 2006 had to be from a neutral country so they wouldn't have this debacle again.
You know what's funny? On ESPN during the strike, the poll asked if you would miss hockey if it were gone forever. All 50 states said the wouldn't miss it. So we should get out of hockey and give Canada at least one thing they can be good at........how the hell did I get here to women's hockey?
NHL consists of 24 American teams and only 6 Canadian. Canadian teams usually end up in finals so... that shows it. It makes sense because hockey is a CANADIAN sport. That's why canadians are the best in hockey. and yes the NHL consists of mostly canadian players.
hockey is played all over the world. Though the other leagues aren't at a high level like the NHL, they're still not bad at all. There are rarely any competitive or noteworthy football leagues, basketball leagues or baseball leagues outside of NA
I still remember that game and what I consider ether the most incompetent or bias reffing in hockey history! wost than that east German guy during the 72 summit series. was there ever a enquiry into the officiating of that game??
I guess you didn't read what I wrote. The poll on ESPN said that NONE of the 50 states cared about hockey. NY is a part of the 50 states. Yes there are people who will miss it but the majority in every state doesn't care about hockey.
Figures Americans would try to cheat their way to a gold medal but they lost so hahaha! I'm Canadian and I love both countries but I really dislike most of the people in the States because they are power hungry and arrogant. I'm thankful that I'm Canadian!
As an American, I say that the Canadians more than deserved that win. The terrible reffing was so blatant. But it is a shame people posting here has to say that America sucks because of something like this. You're no better than the ref in this case.
im pretty sure basketball hockey and football were invented in canada football had two versions on in canada one in usa and when canada played the US the US thought canada's rules were better so the played by those (canada won the game)
I wonder if anyone did an investigation into the reffing of this game. It was worse than that east german ass during the 72 sumit games. It could not have been more one sided. Even the U.S. players must have noticed.
yeah they should sportsmanship, but what was canada suppose to do? just smile and not do anything? obviously they were happy and jumping all over the place. wouldnt you be if you won gold in your home land.
ummmm... anyone who actually watched this game saw how terrible the officiating was. Unfortunately you can't actually see the calls in this video. It actually was an embarrassment, and probably bad for women's hockey.
The refs were the worst in the recent NHL playoffs. All they did was help the Canadian teams cause they can't play worth a shit. Sharks vs. Edmonton and then Calgary was horrific. Dallas vs Vancouver was a joke too.
Oh and another thing about American and NHL hockey. The reason why american teams win is because of the ratio of american teams vs canadian teams in the NHL. Most of the top players in the NHL and the world are canadian
@sk8r4lyf6969 not sure after your poor spelling and wording, its because US schools offer scholarships for sports more than Canadian universities, Canadian schools concentrate on academics.
It's a call that is NEVER called. To say that the ref was biased is wrong to say that that she fucked up is correct. It was a call that shouldn't have been made in such a big game.
@ jt094 I totally agree with you on this. The second goal for the Americans shouldn't have gone in. The Canadian goalie, Kim St. Pierre should have been out challenging the puck
I remember this game, the officiating was a joke. America needs to cheat to win, that'll be their legacy from now on. And they wonder why they have a bad reputation! (haha!!)
The ref of the gold medal game. The IHFF a new rule called the American rule. The rule states that the game officals can not be from the countries playing. It all because of this one game.
