@@malmsey1541 450W for a bit more than 7 minutes while being rested in an one all-out effort? For an ex-pro such as Gaimon it's nothing spectacular. The best I've ever done was 436W for 5 minutes at the weight of 65kg. I was never a pro, smoked from the age 13 till 21 or so and honestly I don't think I am particularly gifted. And obviously, never came across doping as well in my life. So yeah, such numbers are absolutely achievable for someone who spent cycling for well over a decade at the professional level. You'd be surprised what a structured training over many years can do. People here should stop this nonsense about him being doped.

This video is going down and at 14:43 that climb always redlined me. Phil makes it look so easy. Kanan is a masterful slog also. I met Captain America there one year, he asked me what are the good rides and I told him Decker Canyon and Hidden Valley. I asked where he was staying and he said in his car, and I replied; "YOU TOO!!! He was with Floyd. I love Phil's comment of Bike Fit Companies and Why do the pro's use Tucson for winter training???

I think him trying to speak at the end says it all. Perhaps Phil has been training a lot recently and has some fatigue in him. That is to say he can put out good power (even for him) and his heart is not really able to beat very fast. I know for me, when detrained or tapered I can hit the high heart rate but when I have been training a lot I can make good power but my heart rate never comes up real high. My heart is almost not able to. Low hr doesn't just mean low o2, it may mean your heart is super strong and pumps way more blood per beat than someone with a higher heart rate. That was a real hard effort by Phil, I just don't think he could have pushed much harder. Not on the day. Perhaps if he tapered a bit more for it and then he could have done faster and perhaps more with the higher heart rate you suggested 170-180

Wow, nice job! i'm excited for this years videos. I have a question about heart rate. first, i know everyone's HR is different, but how close were you to doing your max effort for that amount of time? did you have more head room as far as HR is concerned? I know that your focus is watts/time, not HR, but i am still curious. I'm obviously not anywhere close to you in terms of fitness and conditioning, but i've had several rides where my average HR was 170 for over an hour. is that common for you as well? or do you get to a point where sustained effort near max power output doesn't necessarily mean you are close to max HR? thanks for the hard work you put in.
