Not only is this army the worst Warhammer army I have come across, but it was also one of the cheapest! Bought on eBay for a whopping $1 per model, that's one of the better deals I've gotten in a long time. This is a really exciting project and I want to turn this Blades of Khorne army into something real fun for the tabletop! This week the focus is going to be on a super nice older BloodThirster that will fit right into this army.

By far this is the worst army I’ve seen, and not because of the pieces that look ok. The army as a whole is almost completely wrecked, some of them are even beyond repair. The bloodthirster, he was the best, and I’m not knocking the paint job at all. There were parts missing of course, so those had to be fixed, but the rest of the army looks like melted goo. So In my experience, no, there aren’t worse armies out there.

As the original seller, a bit of a back story. I have been buying and selling Warhammer for 15 years. I also do professional painting jobs and commission for fun. About four years ago, a fellow wargamer gave me his 9-year-old son Khorne army after he passed away for free. It was his first army and was using it to learn how to paint. I placed them in simple green but ironically moved to Reno NV shortly after for work. When I returned back home to PA beginning of last year, I discovered them and put them up for sale (I was downsizing at the time). Ironically, If I had them with me in NV, I could have walk a mile to the house and said: Free army, here you go. Please remember, we all start somewhere.

This certainly marks the first time that a seller has come forward after a video that I’ve made. Thank you for sharing, I really appreciate it. It’s very unfortunate and sad that your friends son passed away. Hopefully I can do a little justice to the army by fixing it back up. Being from Reno at the time as well, crazy coincidence. Is the danger really on the level of "no glove airbrushing" and "brush licking" or more along the lines of using propellant sprays in your spray booth? ;)

@@deebernaers137 jokes aside I think it’s a pretty legitimate fire hazard. I haven’t looked into it much as I don’t use an ultra sonic cleaner. My understanding is the ipa should be bagged and the cleaner filled with water. Probably a lot more dangerous than rattle cants in a spray booth.

Having owned that old school blood thirster I'm 99% sure there was no missing parts to the hilt from whip. I remember pinning it as it just sat in the u shape of the hilt. Great job on it.

Honestly I've seen, and was expecting, a lot worse. Could have got a persons first army where they didn't know anything about painting or assembly. Were the models still in one piece that army would have looked reasonable presentable compared to a number of other armies that I've seen.

I prefer the original dog headed bloodthirster, but great paint job anyway. You can mix milliput with play doh at around 50%. Helps with making it easier to mix the milliput, and the hardener from the milliput will harden the play doh. Saves you using more of the expensive milliput, and can still be sanded.

The sand did really make it feel like the model was standing on that base in a natural way, and made the whole piece come together. that detail in the book and the carving on the altar has to be one of my favorite features of this piece.

Best way to use Milliput, is mix with rubbing alcohol. It becomes a paste. So you can brush it like paint, into layers. It's far more forgiving, if you don't have sculpturing skills.

I've tried that a few times and just haven't been able to get the consistency quite right. Sometimes it seems fine and I can fill small gaps, but more often it seems like it's not breaking down the milliput and I have to go in by hand anyways. Idono, something to keep trying!

Cool video! Casey the guy who owns alclad paints turned me on to oven cleaner to strip models. Omg! It stinks but it works in seconds and it's plastic safe..I don't know about resin safe. I use a carbon infused dust mask and the odor isn't a problem. Btw this works as a great general cleaner around the house but don't use it on anything painted or varnished..obviously.

I have fond memories of Kenny Boucher’s video from maybe four years ago when he eBay-rescued this model. I’m impressed that you picked up where he left off, and amplified it, restoring from a worse place, telling more of a story and making a better video. Bravo!

Hey, can you show more pictures of what you're describing? Like, you call it the worst army you've ever seen, yet we hardly get a good look at it. Then you start with the bloodthirster, only show 3 seconds of it spinning around and then talk about stuff you could easily show with your hands on the actual model, instead of just showing you talking into the camera. not trying to sound too mean, i know these videos take alot of effort. but you need to realize you probably spent alot of time looking at the army but we havn't, so just throw in more footage :)

I think a cool bit to add at the end would be a before and after shot. Prior to resto and then after with both on your spinning display so we get a really satisfying view of just how far you were able to bring these models back. Cool stuff man

I just bought a 2000 point ork set off someone online. Good 80% of it is unpainted... The rest made me want to cry. Bright, and I mean BRIGHT orange ork skin with very elegant looking hot pink pants and purple shirts. None of which is even done well, very sloppy. There is even an Ork with what seems to be a green stuff sculpted smurf hat on him.... Which I had a laugh at and decided to keep on

Finished prints should not have that much white lines. Maybe try cleaning a good bit more in, or change IPA. Also make sure all IPA has evaporated before using more UV lights on it ;)

Two words, chain thong. Really dig the figure, using the head as a hilt is inspired and the paint turned out great. Not a fan of the sand all over the base though, but that's more of a difference in artistic choice than anything.

I’ve never had a problem using in in the sonic cleaner, but making a pact with khorne for extra security is always recommended :)

I am glad to see someone who knows what they're doing using isopropyl alcohol to strip paint. Because I wasn't sure if its a good idea. I use it to remove small areas of paint with a cotton swab. I it works well. But it does remove the primer too. So the small area needs a complete repainting. But it's still a good eraser for a basically almost complete model that somehow you make a big mistake in a smaller area. Better than a complete model repaint.

Love your videos, been a fan of minatures (old D&D player). Love the aspect of Warhammer but never played. After watching 30+ I have questions. 1. When you say 'playable level', does then mean complete or painted? Do the minatures have to be painted for you to play with them? Heard 'points' in reference to the size of the army, what are points?

Thanks!! To answer your questions. 1. Playable level, or tabletop standard is kind of a base line measurement for tournament play. Usually 3 color minimum. But really it’s like saying I painted this model but not to a very high level, but still awesome for gaming. Most people like to play with painted minis, but honestly if you’re playing casually then it’s not an issue. 2. Points point to, again, competitive play. A normal game of Warhammer is 2000 points, so each unit is costed in a book so it’s relatively balanced when each player has the same amount of points. So a set of 5 of one minis could be 150 points and another set of 10 at the same points would be, theoretically, evenly matched. It’s not a perfect system, but it works well enough. I hope that helps :)

Excellent job with the Bloodthirster!, I just recently bought a ton of plastic space wolves on ebay that had horrible paint jobs so would you recommend using 70% isopropyl alcohol on them with a sonic cleaner?

Nice find! I would recommend lAs totally awesome or something similar if you are going to be doing a lot of models. The iso will heat up too much if you run it for too many cycles, the alcohol can catch fire if it gets too hot. If you need them all done even faster, and you can find it. 97% or higher isopropyl alcohol by itself will remove everything as well. Without the sonic cleaner.

I don't understand what's wrong with the army? It looks fine when you're unpacking it. I mean, I see the broken models, but you can just glue them back together, because minis. Is it because I'm colorblind that I can't see what the big fuss is about?

Well for example at 1.43 those khorne blood warriors look reallyy bad. it's like grey with red splattered everywhere and the gold is just yellow but there is also black showing through (how!??) and its put on the miniature like someone just stabbed it with a brush.

What Ultrasonic cleaner do you use? I'm trying to find one that works well and won't break my bank, is there any features I should or should not look for?

Famili is the brand I have, I think it was $30 on Amazon, something like that. It’s not really meant for heavy duty use, and it’s not completely waterproof, but it does the job well enough at a food price. Just make sure whatever you buy has a timer on it. You don’t want to cook your models by leaving them in too long!

as someone who owns 7 bloodthirsters (yes i made a demon Angron and 7 bloodthirster squad) I can confirm that there were no parts missing to the whip, the flat end just slotted between the 2 prongs next to the skulls... the conversion still looked EPIC though

I've had a few thousand points of Nids in my garage for the past 12 years because when I bought them they looked as beat up as this army. Been trying to fix them up lately, and this gives me hope that it's possible!

Nostalgia! I still have this old Bloodthirster from when I started out in the hobby about 20 years ago. Cool work! BTW I read that using an ultrasonic cleaner like that could potentially be quite dangerous. The isopropanol alcohol has a low flash point, which means it creates fumes that could easily catch fire from a spark of sratic electricity or if the machine malfuntions. Also, a basket in the cleaner is recommended in order to prevent damage to the transducers.

Can you go into locking the pigments with varnish? They fade horribly when I take that approach

I'm sure I can work it into a video at some point. When using a varnish though, try and spray it from pretty far away and don't over do it. it needs to dry and not soak into the pigments, so it locks the layer in as is instead of penetrating it and then locking it in.

I like it better for gap filling, but you can’t beat green stuff for sculpting. The major difference is that milliput can be smoothed with water, and it’s sandable once it dries.

Would you be able to recommend a primer for models? I am having trouble keeping paint on my resin parts

My guess is that there is still some mold release agent on your resin. A good practice to get into when working with resin is to wash it and seal it before you prime. Dish soap, water, and a toothbrush should get rid of the mold release agent on the resin, then a quick seal with a varnish will prevent the primer from soaking into the porous resin. The kind of primer shouldn’t matter after that, just use whatever you have, I imagine that will help with your problem though :)

I use vallejo metal color metallics, they are airbrush ready and already pretty thin. They apply insanely well, very worth having around!

it's gonna be interesting, probably a whole bunch of bubble wrap under and in between the wings, and then separate from the rest of the army, in a bunch of peanuts. As long as the box doesn't take too much abuse it should survive just fine. I've shipped similar things and not had any issues, but it's a pain to pack up that's for sure!

Unless it was intentional, you didn't clean that base nearly enough. Bag it with IPA or mean green (my method) and throw it in the ultrasonic cleaner. Run it a couple cycles, then scrub with a toothbrush and a final rinse.

In rescued a carnifex that was missing his head arms and legs. What little there was has been HOT GLUED together. Gave him a spare carnifex head I had, 4 deathspitters and the legs from my hive tyrant since my tyrant was a flyer.
