What is the incredible crime is that he is so busy from projects coast to coast. Not that I begrudge him the work, its just People Come ON! This guys is like a time machine to hand skills and old knowledge! He should have 20 little apprentices, in the old school fashion learning this skill....Doesn't matter if they are 12 or 44... People should line up just to sweep his floor!

Another video "outta the park" by Mr.Dave. I've been watching this channel for awhile now and the video quality keeps getting better and better. I don't know if Mr.Engels is doing the camera work or not, but somebody is doing excellent work. The lighting is gorgeous! If you've ever looked at the old movies by the great cinema photographers you'll notice the texture of the lighting adds so much to the shot. Mr.Dave's lighting is just really good! Look at the lighting in John Ford movies for an example. Also the camera technique such as the slow closeups, the multiple camera positions and the macro closeups add so much to the quality of the video. Rarely is there an out of focus shot....most are spot on. Not only are these videos expertly crafted, but the subject content of Mr.Dave's craftsmanship just makes an enjoyable watch. What a pleasure! Thank you Mr.Dave for your expertise and your attention to detail in the capture of your work!

What a great lesson for me. That was the coolest sizing method I've seen yet on diameters. No caliper, no test fitting. Just shaving until the lines merge :) Certainly felt old school and traditional. Like something I'd see in a museum history lesson :) lol :) Thank the Lord for supplying you w/ talent, desire and drive. God bless you sir, Sincerely .............................. Steph

Measuring by circumference should presumably be 3.14 times more precise than measuring by diameter. That's assuming that the circumferential measurement is taken with care. I was a little concerned about hand rotating a washer welded to an old bolt. The method seemed loose enough to surrender back the added precision gained by going the circumference route. However the proof of the pudding, and all that. The object was to turn the ends of the hub slightly oversize, which was accomplished.

There are numerous wood turners on You Tube that do nothing more than turn wood into bowls. As beautiful as they may be, they serve no other purpose than just another decoration. You, on the other hand actually use your lathe to turn something of value and usefulness. You're an artist on another level of utilitarian craftsmanship that's great to see. I commend you for all you do and love watching your videos.

It's kind of a challenge for a viewer to even contemplate communicating with a content producer such as yourself. Can typed black & white words ever get my point across? Will you even see it? Your videos are very well produced on many levels. I wonder if you know it. You don't talk something to death, you just SHOW it and count on the viewer to figure out the point. I'm a computer programmer - I didn't know spit about wooden wheels - but I always wanted to. Now, I feel really good when I anticipate the next thing you're going to do. I get to have all the fun and gain all the knowledge, and you get to do all the work - how great is that? Seriously, I do see all the effort involved, including the hardest part - making it all look easy. Thanks so much for sharing.

@@EngelsCoachShop Dave I stated that my love has always been cars, I didn't mention that was cars built before the mid sixties. Back when they were simple, much like what life was at the time. I love to sit there looking at an old piece and imagine how life was when they were built. Do you ever sit there with an old carriage and think about how simple life was when they were built. Sure they didn't have all the life changing devices we have these days, but are we really any better off then our ancestors? They worked hard every day but from the size of most families they found some time for life's simple pleasures also . Any way keep enjoying what you do. Dean

Hi Dave!! New subscriber from from Australia. Came across your videos a couple of weeks ago and have enjoyed them immensely. I don't have the kind of background that you do, but i have come to appreciate the advice you give. I am a sole trader and the tips you give on quoting jobs has been most invaluable. Sometimes, you can only do the best with what you have in front of you, and the jobs themselves can throw curly ones at you after you get started, that you haven't counted on. So, you just give it your best and move on. And yes, you just have to keep going when the job gets repetitious and not very challengingly stimulating. I like your saying, "Just get 'er done" is very valuable advice. Our vocations are not charities, but, there are aspect that just cant be measured in dollars and cents.

Look forward to your videos every week. Visited with my Amish neighbor this afternoon and asked where they get their wheels, if someone local does repairs. He showed me wheels on his carriage, they are fiberglass!!!!. Appears to be one piece, no gaps where spokes meet the hub. He said they have gone to fiberglass as it is cheaper and holds up better in the weather. Not sure how they attach the steel tires. Their wheels come from Pennsylvania.

There are times when surface cracks are acceptable because they were caused by wood drying out over time and they don't effect the material's integrity/strength to the point it will fail. A full split however is a different kind of animal and one mistake novice turners make is to forget that a depth of cut actually must be halved since it takes it from both sides. . Indeed many forget this rule and it's especially true for metal turning lathes because often don't account for this reality due to there dials/gauges arent not set up that way since taking a 1/1000 off is made by cutting 1/500 instead. Looking forward to the next installment and how those spokes going back in order as well as in the proper direction is the trick in getting it right.

I worked in a bicycle shop in New Mexico when I was younger and when someone came in with a bent wheel , it was part of my job to lace a new wheel on the customers old hub. Bicycles use an offset ( as well as a two or three cross over ) on the spokes but only the rear wheel is dished to accommodate the freewheel or gear cluster and keep it in line with the front wheel Im not sure why you dish these wheels , especially now that you have offset the spindles. I assume there is some mechanical advantage like moving the wheel closer to center.

My nurse went to bed so I hit play on this video as back ground whilst I re-wrapped and once again turned a finger into a stupid white pointer thing. Dave just has a nice voice so I didn't follow all to hard, because honestly half stitched is painful. I got stuff wrapped and came up for air around 8:01. Wait those spokes are off set! What the Heck! Once against, from the beginning. Wish I was 17 and could be his hammer holder...
