JHF set a dangerous precedent so Harley Reid is well within his rights to just tell West Coast to go to hell and head elsewhere. It’s called complete credibility into question now
It's this simple , the draft is to help struggling teams rise up to make a more competitive competition. The rule should be if a draftee declines a club they are taken out of that years draft and can try again next year ! In Corne's example where is fairness a bottom team is forced to take a top teams number 4 pick and hand over number 1 or forced into a multi club deal ? This is what the draft is designed for, to stop the top teams being a destination team, hogging all the talent , hence never falling from the top. if they think that is ok withdraw the salary cap and let a club like the Eagles use all their wealth to entice all the best players , but then everyone will say that would be unfair for 90% of the AFL.
I agree. But how much leverage will the club have if/when their number 1 pick decides he wants to go back home and won't put in the effort to train/prep properly for games. Will they get more out of it rather than trading for multiple top 10 picks pre draft? Genuine question since I can't remember how similat past trades went.
@@tastyj111 If he wants to go back home after 1/2 seasons they would get top compensation just like the Roos got for Horne-Francis. And for the kid not to put in the effort he would just hurt his chances of going back home to a decent club. Personally I think they would be better off trading if they can get 3 in the top 10 for him, he might end up great or maybe end up like 99% of top 1, average at best. His style of play is great against small bodies , but against big, strong AFL mids maybe not as dominant.
Roos didn't get top compensation for JHF The players will turn out to be good in wardlaw and sheezel However strictly based on compo I don't see how losing jhf and pick 1 and gaining pick 2 and 3 and a future 1st is fair compensation for someone that was touted as highly as him Also if you think about the trades they were offered for him before he was traded to Port, being adelaide offering north being pick 4 their own future first and 18 in that draft yr I just don't see how the jhf trade could be considered fair compo (obviously the kid is going to be a fantastic player as well) I agree with you also Reid has done them a favour if the reports are true, trade the pick for as many top picks you can
@@widesreentv That is a decent observation! Lets break it down . Wardlaw (3) in the limited games he has played in his first year has shown close too if not equal to what Horne-Francis did. Sheezel (2) should win the 2023 rising star even though he is playing out of position , even if he doesn’t has shown 5x in his 1st year compared to Horne-Francis . So the Roos got picks 2 and 3 + 40 and 43 + future 1st rounder +now considering what we have already seen from the Roo’s picks I would say that is pretty good compensation. Horne-France has shown glimpses of talent playing in a stacked team pushing for top 4 , but will he end up better than both of the Roo’s top 3 picks with out even taking into consideration the future 1st round pick ?
Kane cornes saying its unprecedented how bad west coast are is stupid. Its never as bad as you think. They are bad this year, but i wouldnt be surprised if they climb in 3 years. People forget, they are a powerful club. They have 100,000 members and a multi million dollar team. They have a lot of strength off the field. Clubs like West coast, adelaide and collingwood dont flounder low for long.
Cornes is all for players tempering the draft openly. Most past top picks went to clubs that performed bad that season. Its there to make the competition even.
Completely agree. Kane Cornes is saying that the extreme situations aren't relevant but they definitely are. Player agents are already showing how they're starting to flex and manipulate the competition. Paul O'Connor has been said to have used his muscle to ensure that coaches he represents get players he represents. The AFL needs to stamp this sh-t out quick smart or it'll just become a circus.
if you don't want to play AFL at the highest level then don't bother nominating for the national draft. The whole point of it is so that ALL clubs get access to the best young players in each state. Stop ruining the draft by pandering to the players being drafted because they need to accept the fact that's how the draft works, that's how the draft pick allocation works in order to give the lowest clubs the best opportunity to get great players into their list to rebuild and eventually compete in finals. If you don't want to play the game then don't nominate, it's that simple. If the club with pick 1 decides they WANT to split it for 3 first rounders than that is their decision, individual players should get no say in where they get drafted to otherwise what's the point of the national draft?
The media really want him to declare he won’t go to the eagles, who are by far the biggest club in the competition and won’t be down for ever, 3 years of hardship and perseverance and they will be a powerhouse once again.
@jackwitcombe765 Collingwood is the richest club and as far as members we don't have this years numbers for WC which is interesting tbh. As it stands rn Richmond have the most.
Wrong, The West coast Eagles are the have over 100 thousand members the most of any club. They are getting on average 40 thousand a home game and are the richest club in the afl.
@@mathewpople101and Collingwood averages between 50,000 and 90,000 per game.... the pies draw twice the attendance of not only the Eagles but every other club and have done for 100yrs!
If west coast drafts him he goes there. It’s a ridiculous argument that Kane is making here. The top draft goes to the worst club - that’s how it works. West Coast will bounce much more quickly than Kane is saying, but that’s a separate argument.
@@ogidy001 Eagles will be top 4 in a few years......All the young players that have gained experience while playing against AFL clubs during last year and this year, will give them a massive boost. I know last year and this year were bad, but it will help.
If anyone can forgiven to be bitter in the media, it would be Nathan Buckley. I hate the Pies but I have an incredible respect for Bucks, class act through and through. There are no words I can speak higher enough than Nathan Buckley He lost the back to back 2002/2003 grannies to the Lions: didn’t complain once He lost the 2018 granny to my boys (Eagles) by 5 points: didn’t complain once When asked about the Dom Sheed goal and the missed free kick: didn’t complain once When asked about the runner accidentally running into play which gave Yeo a goal: didn’t complain once When every media outlet was hounding him down every day and night before leaving the Pies as coach: didn’t complain once I can’t stand the Pies… but I take my hat off to Bucks for handling hardship like a champion. Only very few could maintain that level of integrity through such footy heartbreak. Kane Cornes: bitches and complains every single day
If you get drafted by west coast then grow some balls and stick with it. Sick of these kids whinging about what club they get drafted to, they have no idea how lucky they are to play footy for a living. If they want to move clubs after 3-4 years then so be it.
West Coast will draft him and keep him. They have the best record of keeping guys from Vic or SA and they come WA ppl- think Wirrapunda, Braun, B Waters, Butler, Schofield, Hurn, Shuey, Gaff, Duggan, Cole, A Selwood etc etc etc All premiership player other than Gaff who missed in 2018.
The draft has always been about evening up the competition, through helping struggling clubs. It was not set up to serve the needs of new players. No one in their right mind will draft the tassie kid mckerrnen(?), because theres too much risk that he'll leave when the new club starts.
What BS, so you think he is going to be playing VFL until 2027? Of course not, some club will back in their system, every expert in Australia, said Ollie Wines won’t be at Port more than his first contract.😊
I say if you want to play professionally, and earn big dollars in a nation-wide competition - then you have to be willing to play wherever. That's the condition of the job - just as FIFO jobs require you to be willing to go from city to city. If you can't handle that - then go find another career. Also, the vast majority of players, due to population numbers, will usually pop up in VIC - which means the higher picks are more likely to come from there. And if you're a struggling club, finding yourself down the bottom, you are the very reason the draft exists, and if you can't build yourself back up by being the most deserving of help due to your location, then you might as well just scrap the entire national competition altogether.
Kane Cornes, normally a big fan of your commentary... But far out your call on Harley Reid is horrid. As said repeatedly in this comments section.. the draft is there to even the competition. Look at Hawthorn in 2001. They were terrible. And then won three flags in a row. Why not go to the biggest club in the league. Great stadium. Losing by 100 points and still has 40000 members turn up each week. I'd like to see you have this point of view if it was Port mate.
Kane Cornes listened to about five points as to why he’s wrong and should shut up, and just said “yeah, I understand that, but…” He’s a professional troll.
Why's Kane saying if Reid goes to WC he won't taste success for 5 years? It's a 2 year contract. Hardly the end of the world. Scary to think what might happen to the comp if all the best players can dictate where they go.
They weren't even 2nd last, let alone wooden spooners. They were 14/16. Massive difference to dead last, with 1 win, and one of the worst percentages in AFL history.
@@debuthunter5389 Average losing margin of over 10 goals and only defeated fellow bottom teams, sure maybe slightly less dire, but still horrible. Dark year for WA football.
Kane once again feeding off a story that probably isn't true. Reids coach came out today and said hes happy to go anywhere. Once again media filling lies. And people forget West Coast don't have to draft him as number 1? Back in there club to retain players which they have a good history of. They either draft him and stick fat with good history of retaining players. Don't draft him as pick 1. Trade pick 1 for multiple high picks.
WC would be better off trading pick 1. As good as Reid is I don't see a bona fide superstar and rarely does pick 1 live up to the hype. Two top ten picks for #1 would certainly be doable and shores up WC aging list. Definitely poor form from Reid though if his words are true.
Hahahaha 5 years before the Eagles will be any good ! Wow ! Eagles should split the pick. How do you think Harley would feel playing for North Melbourne now. And we are only 6 rounds in the season. Cornes, your football brain is about the size of a Dung Beetle !
Cornes wouldn't be surprised if the saints brought in Membrey this week.... Membrey has a knee injury and is 3-4 weeks off according to the club. I know the saints might be a bit irrelevant for other fans, but knowing whats going on with all the clubs is this blokes only job.
The injury list gets printed on the AFL website midweek, it’s incredibly easy to see exactly where players are at, of course some clubs do some fudging but that’s a separate story.
I love how Cornes keeps banging on about i "he's the next Dustin Martin'. What pick did Martin go to idiot and wasn't his club a complete basket case for 30+ years before 2017?
Cornes looks like a crazy Bafoon now. Harley has been drafter to West Coast and is very happy to go to the richest club in the AFL and the club that has played more finals than any other club since the inception of AFL in 1990.He also said they wouldnt win more than 5 games in the next 5 years. Lets see how good his prediction will go lol. He might have to don a Pinnochio nose on the Sunday footy show if that doesnt happen lol
Football players move from Brazil, Africa, Australia and Asia to go Europe Basketball player do the same, rugby players do the same. How is it in the AFL that a player says i don't want to move state. What does that say about the competition, It's called a national draft, if he's not willing to move state then he shouldn't be in contention. The AFL needs to step in and stamp this nonsense out.
Some of these commentators are clowns like Kane Cornes. How can it be said that the West Coast Eagles won't be good for Harley Reid? What rubbish. All clubs do not stay on top, and much more is being made of the fact the Eagles are on the bottom. Let's be real as a club there are ups and downs. Draftees are familiar with the fact that #1 goes to the bottom team. Perhaps we need to take the arrogance out of this, and the Draftees accept being put up for draft with the knowledge of what could happen and accept how it goes after all, it is putting them onto the field in the top league. Seems this kid may already believe he is more than he is.
When Tassie comes in, that's 18 rounds, plus rivalry round (showdown, derby etc) gather round, that's 20 games. Plus two more random, bang 22 games, done
Thats what we have now, everyone plays once, the rivals all play each other then there is gather round (random matchup) with a few more random matches.
So fucking what cain, wuy should harley reid, get drafted to melb and get gifted a grand final, he should earn his place in the game, and so what if he,d be a better player at melb, wwhat about all the other pick one,s that have had to start at the bottom, your just talking shit now
How about AFL gives bonuses to these draftee contracts higher the order u get drafted higher the draftee bonus to the starting wage ( which i believe are all set at the minimum right now , apologies if im wrong on that ) . So if u get drafteed at number 1 u get say 150% bonus wage ( all the bonuses would not be included in salary cap too ). So if you get picky and want to go to good club in your home state and say no thanks to the rest of them u might end up only getting a 60% bonus and go pick 6 or 7 rather than pick 1 or 2 and get 150 % or 120 % bonus .
@@stallon720 I found this " “Picks 1-20 you're on a base salary of $105,000 a year, 21-40 you're on $95,000 and 41 and up you then go onto $90,000 a year, and rookies are rookie listed at 85,000 a year,” so no different bonus between pick 1 and 20 .
The solution is play everyone twice and don't complain about too many games, compared to what the US basketball season of 82 games. Pathetic effort AFL.
If I don't want to play for a club, you can't make me. I support who I want and play for who I want. Liam Jones showed it's your choice the AFL can't make you do anything.
Hmm unproven young bloke wanting to choose where he plays 😂 ... Sounds familiar.. Kane shouldn't be feeling this... You play where you are drafted.. simple
Chris Judd come to the Eagles when the Eagles were 4th from the bottom ladder, He left Eags with an Afl Premiership and Brownlow medal and a hot Chicky Babe, I can see where Juddy went wrong Aye Kade what do you reckon hahaha
Freo are currently 4th from the bottom of the ladder, the eagles are miles away from that level of footy. Judd was drafted by a far better West Coast side. To add to that they won 7 games the year before Judd was Drafted they’ve won 1 game this year.
I'm beyond playing age, but always been a South Melbourne/Sydney Swans fan and wouldn't have wanted to play for any other club, money or not. Pity there's not a system where kids could play for the club they grew up following. It would have to be somehow regulated so that the top clubs don't wind up with all the talent. Maybe some potential draftees are from W.A. and would Love to play for them if they followed them from juniors.
If you get drafted, even if it's for the Suns, but then work your way up, you can play for any club you want eventually. I don't get why players wouldn't want to just do it that way.
@@SilentHotdog28 For years now, the culture is ingrained in people to accept wherever the draft sends you. Young players are prepared for it. It wasn't always like that. Before the AFL, Melbourne teams had zones. So if you lived in suburbs XY+Z, you played for the team attached to that zone. Still didn't allow for you to play for the team you followed as a kid but anyway.
I hate wce but if you dont want to be drafted to wce, dont enter the draft. Weak players with the go home factor. Look at other sports, players go to other countries for their whole careers...
