This week Trena refinishes an old rocking chair. Some of the staining would not come out. What do you think of the way it looks?

I have one like that. It belonged to my great grandmother. It has served 7 generations of our family. It was refinished for me when I was expecting my daughter. It’s hard to think how long ago that was🥰. She is a grandmother of teenagers now. The chair is going strong but it could use a touch up again.

I've never heard this referred to as Morris style before. I just thought they were arts and crafts or mission style. I have this same chair. They're timeless.

People involved in the arts and crafts movement, will be accredited for the design feature of certain objects, William Morris was one of the leading figures in the Arts and Crafts movement, so it's quite reasonable to think that the chair is in the style of Morris. Charles Rennie Mackintosh, was also a leading figure and you will quite of find design that are in the Mackintosh style, but are Arts and Crafts. Not sure where you live in the world but George Clarke who is an architect over here in the UK, has just finished his latest series on amazing spaces, In it he goes deeply into the arts and crafts movement, if your interested and can get to see it, it's very interesting.

Love this chair, definitely in the style of William Morris one of the male leads for the Arts and Craft Movement, that then led us seamlessly onto Art Nouveau. However people also need to be reminded that it wasn't just men who were pioneers in the arts and crafts movement, May Morris, Mary Seton Watts, Margaret Macdonald were as important if not more so. It was there designs for fabrics, wall coverings and glass that made the movement more accessible.

Heck yes, I'd accept this; I love Arts & Crafts furniture. Very nice job by the way. Incidentally, I'm not sure "Morris chair" is correct. A Morris chair is usually a reclining , adjustable easy chair that has pegs or a rod to keep the back at the chosen angle for comfort. Thanks for all you've taught me. I look forward to your videos!

Back when I was in college I bought an oak swivel chair that had been painted a kind of military gray. I needed something to keep me focused during summer break instead of doing stupid things college kids do sometimes. I wish I knew more about refinishing furniture but I just did what I thought I could on my budget. I still have that chair 50 years later and it still looks good. Amateur luck, but had I had access to this video then It could have been even better. Thanx!

I have a chair like this too. It came from the garage/ barn of a farm house that was near our home almost 40 years ago. It had been home to some varmits ( seat of the chair) and perhaps a dog had chewed on the back of one of the rockers. I think I paid $50 for it, but maybe not even that. It needs a lot of love, but I temporarily "fixed the seat and covered it, cleaned the entire chair, snd we are still using it as is. One arm needs to be glued where it joins the bac, but it lives on as is. I wish I had Trena near me . I found an old picture of on of my great grandparents homes and there sat an old rocker on the porch very much like mine. I was thrilled. This one has rocked 3 grands and one great grand since I've had it.

Thank You for sharing the restoration of this chair with us! Watching this was relaxing and very educational. I have learned more important details of furniture restoration from your videos than anyone else I watch. I would adopt a sturdy handsome rocking chair like this one, with or without a seat, in a heartbeat! One of my Great Uncles had a chair like this with a brown leather seat, and I always loved sneaking a few minutes in that special chair. I love that you have the experience and skill to notice the rough front under-edge that catches on clothes. It's the small details like that which can make such a big difference in restoring a piece of furniture. This is another lovely restoration! ❤ 👉🏻 I would love to know how you constructed your spray booth! 😄

Seeing you, with such care & expertise, doing an excellent job of repairing & refinishing all these pieces of furniture I used to own when I lived in San Francisco & Mill Valley, California USA. The SF house had many old pieces, and I added more as people were cheaply selling them or gotten free. All usually needed work (that you are doing). My brother, John, was supposed to help me with the fixes, but didn't, so most did not get done. Other people said they would, but I quickly found they had no idea how to do it. Can you imagine how I felt when one guy was using very course grain sandpaper & scratching the wood because he was going across the grain! I yelled, "Stop! ...and never had him "helping" again! It was obvious he had no knowledge about properly working with wood! [See separate Comment re this rocker]

If anyone is interested there is a yt video on the “Craftsman” origins. It’s called “Craftsman Bungalow” on Vox. I found it fascinating since I have my Grandfather’s Rocking chair similar to the one your sprucing up with a thick leather cushion. Along with the writing table and barristers book case, also the most essential keyed liquor cabinet. They were custom built for him by a storefront shop with local craftsmen in my area. The order number with his name is written on the back of the bookcase. It even has a secret compartments for sensitive documents.

About 30 years ago I built my first Morris chair. I drew up my chair in autocad and used Norm Abram's TV show New Yankee Workshop to get the joinery details correct. I made that first chair from South Texas Mesquite we milled from dead trees. Ten years later I made another matching chair out of white oak as the Mesquite situation had changed for me. I took the Shipley approach and fumed the chair using ammonia. That was an experience! Id love to make a rocker and that one you are working on would be perfect. I love the curved back and how it fits into the uprights. Im also on the verge of making new leather cushions for my pair in the living room. I really enjoy watching you work and to listen to your thoughts on the jobs you do. All my best!

I. Did one like this ,50 ‘years ago,re glued all the joints, and striped it right back to the bear wood,it was made in the 30,’s,the squab was missing ,but it was all bees wax ,and dust polished in,a gallon of meths ,wire wool, and soft brushing, soon gave up that white oak worn look, I just used to heat up the bees wax ,add a little meths in it, and brush it on hot ,and chase it with a hot air gun ,on low a heat ,give it a day to set ,then the hard work begins, brushing in and removing all the surplus wax, slowly bringing out all the wood grain, with a good hard wax it allows the marks and dents to look like they were ,part of its history and blend in,and the new squab I made a green leather with upholstery, webbing and springs,I did this as a gift, and my friend was over the moon.just sum thing to do in the winter evenings.

Love them. I think the style is Mission, the Morris chair was a Mission style recliner with an interesting push button mechanism that via springs, wire & metal armature reclined & raised the front apron. I had one I got as far as repairing the mechanism then had to pass it on as life changed. I did refinish the two Mission side pieces, one side chair & one short back rocker. These were all cushioned with leather upholstery & reattaching the upholstery in that old oak was challenging. Your work is amazing!
