Wood boats built from wooden boat kits are something that boat building enthusiasts have used for years to build small wooden boats ranging from wood kayaks to wood sailboats and even wood powerboats. In this video I visit Chesapeake Light Craft - the leading supplier of wooden boat building plans and wooden boat building kits to learn more about what is involved with building wood boats from kits. They specialize in supplying wooden boat kits for beginners.
These small wood boats look amazing and are relatively easily assembled for first time boat builders from plans or complete boat kits at home, or built during week-long workshops. These wooden boats are then sealed in epoxy resin and fiberglass to protect and strengthen the wooden structure making a very sturdy and lightweight composite boat!

I was 68 and my friend was 70 when we built a CLC Peeler Skiff in his barn in 2014. It was a wonderful experience just building the boat. My family and I have been using her on Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island for the last 8 years. We'll be putting her on her saltwater mooring in a few weeks so we can enjoy 2023 and catch some of the Striped Bass that are moving into the Bay as I write. The Peeler Skiff is a great family boat and is rugged and very seaworthy. I'm really glad we built her.

Paul Gartside the naval architect/engineer said that a guy who built houses and read a book on boat building COULDN’T build a wooden boat , unless he was “compelled” to do so … after reading books ( Dave Gerr & others ) for 2-1/2 years before retiring , this old home builder actually built a wooden boat of my own design, got the boat division of the Virginia DWR to approve its construction, and had it featured in the Dec. ‘21 online version of Wooden Boat magazine … I was “compelled “ !!! … just like CLC , you never know till you try !!! 😊

there is many advantages to build your own wooden boat 1) a wooden boat is much quieter than a fiberglass or aluminum boat 2) a wooden boat is tailorable to your taste and needs ( you have so many designs available and each design is tailorable ) 3) the choice of power is illimited ( sail, gas, diesel, electric, shaft drive, I/O, ) and the engine choice is not limited to GM 4) the proudness to have built your own boat THIS IS PRICELESS very good topic very good video.

Along with factoring the time to restore the Whaler vs building a new Wooden Skiff, you also need to factor in the Cost to power the Whaler vs CLC Wooden boat. A 60-HP outboard is about $8,000 vs a 15-HP outboard is about $3,000. If you only have to buy a 15-HP then you could use the $5,000 in savings to pay for the CLC Peeler Skiff Kit!

My dad made a Chesapeake Boats single person kayak and it is still in great shape and hanging in our garage. We take it out a few times a year and enjoy it. He really enjoyed building it with his buddy. They're both 60+ and enjoyed hanging out together in his buddy's workshop. It's a pretty nice little kayak, although I kind of think I'd just buy a plastic kayak if that was what I wanted. It's just kind of easier than all the work that goes into a wooden kayak.

I just built a wooden stitch and glue. The only benefit I can see to making your own is if you want it to have unique features you cannot find in any local boats that you have access too. In my case I wanted it to be extremely tiny to fit on a car roof rack. Stitch and glue boats take endless hours to make but the end result is totally worth it. I sell the plans for my boat design on my site for only 15 bucks and it took me about a month to design and a month to build. The cost ended up being around 500 bucks.

I built a 15 ft wooden mud boat for duck hunting. It’s lighter than most aluminum boats, and with a Kevlar and glass bottom it is supremely durable and handles rocks and logs well. Additionally being able to customize all the dimensions has made it much more versatile than a factory aluminum job boat.

My first boat was an Olympic Finn sailboat built out of mahogany. It was a 15 foot racing dinghy built in Poland. The Lumberyard Skiff…by Old Wharf Dory is going to be my next boat project. I’ve completely restored a 15’ StarCraft and honestly all the time I spent, I could’ve build a really nice and slightly more capable boat (the LYS 16). It has a pronounced bow to take big waves at displacement speeds. It’s designed to be quick to build, durable, and cheap.

I am 99% sure you can stop your membership at any time. Since the boats are their rentals, I am sure they coordinate a way to bring you back if you break down, I think our local one reserves in half day increments, so you'd use two reservation slots to reserve a boat for the whole day. Many locations are only sunup to sundown as well but I'm sure a local franchise could provide more info.

Having owned and lived on a 34' wooden Bahama Sloop for 4.5 years, I can say it is an adventure. I bought the boat around 1987, it was made in 1957 by 2 expert's eyes best guess it was made by the Albury boats in the Bahama, (British Loyalist who settled in Bahama back in the day or so they said), this guess was based on the equality and precision of the wood working and materials. One of the opinion who was the best informed one was a "Ship Wright" named Red Hughes who was the best in the South Florida area. She was a Carvel Planked, Long Leaf Yellow Pine probably over Oak, there were 2 sections of plank that were replaced with Philippine Mahogany cause it was the best available then and there. The craftmanship and work just for that little task was insane. Red (the shipwright) was the best, his resume was a fat photo album with pictures of Trumpy Yachts (nothing to do with the political figure, google Trumpy yachts if you like) and included work he did on The Calypso (one of the several iteration of the mans boat an early one that was obviously wooden. Red re-caulked the entire boat (not caulking like you buy at the hardware google calking carvel planked wooden boats). The work was done a Nuta's boat yard Miami River and there was a Cuban fisherman with his two boys (men in their 20's or 30's) and he came over with his sons so they could see Red caulking, (apparently there is an art to this and when it is done right the sound is quite unique) the fisherman said he heard the sound and stopped the work they were doing on their own boat so his boys could see what a master caulker is like. The story is too long but, if you are talking a "real" wooden boat, strap in your going for a ride. Wonderful thing called life and experiencing it is the only way to go.

I’m thinking if it’s deeply encased in glass and epoxy resin it shouldn’t be nearly as bad as a traditional wooden boat.

We built a CLC Peeler Skiff in 2014. There is absolutely no more maintenance on a resin and fiberglass encapsulated plywood boat than there is on a plain fiberglass boat. The epoxy resin used is more durable than the cheaper polyester resin used on most commercially built molded fiberglass hulls. Modern polyurethane marine paints looks like gelcoat and and seem to be almost as durable. Our Peeler Skiff lives on a saltwater mooring in New England from May thru October and still looks almost brand new. The only maintenance has been a thorough cleaning with a sponge every Spring, a coat of Turtle Wax on the outer hull, and a fresh coat of antifouling paint below the waterline.

Would I Consider A Wooden Boat? Yes I have owned wood boats before I like wooden boats I would love to build a wood boat particularly one called a nova scotian dory It a Grand Banks type dory I live in South Louisiana and few would even know what a grand banks dory even is Wood boats can be a art of craftsmen Maybe wood might not be the absolute best most modern material That has nothing to do with anything anyway :) Yes I would own a wood boat

You'd be surprised the amount of people that would rather just buy the wooden dinghy over building it. I don't know why retail of wooden boats in America basically stops at the kit stage.
@WayneTheBoatGuy
@WayneTheBoatGuy Год назад
I think there just isn't enough of a market for it because the labor costs would make them much more costly than aluminum or plastic which can be manufactured with significantly less hours of manual labor.
@scharftalicous
@scharftalicous Год назад
@@WayneTheBoatGuy cost of labour? This is the age of robots (or at least not paying them), a fully finished wooden boat should be the cheapest kind of hull. I'm working on this at the moment in Australia but I got to franchise to America sooner rather than later.

Quite frankly, your money and time is better spent rebuilding the Whaler. What needs to be done to that hull you've got is not that bad at all. A restored Whaler is a very desirable boat that will hold its resale value. That being said, the CLC Peeler Skiff is a good looking boat. If you build it, you're building it for yourself and I wouldn't expect much in the way of resale value.

I an seriously thinking about building their Southwest Dory. I want build it as a solar electric powered motor launch (600-800 watts of solar canopy) with a EPropulsion 3.0 Pod motor. Should have a nice hull speed around 6.0-7.5 mph and with a 100 48v battery about 3-4 hours of run time at a reasonable speed.
