Recently I have been filming some content with Total Headturners in Epping. They deal with GT40 and Cobra replicas, but they also have some other oddities in their lineup. One of the more strange is this - the Iconic Autobody 387 Speedster. It's a Boxster, with a major makeover. But is it worth buying?

I personally love the 356, so this appeals to me. I do think it needs tires with more sidewall/smaller wheels to complement the classic looks, but overall I like it.

Yes, and get rid of that stupid racing suit. You look like an idiot in an attractive car. Yapping is fine, but show the car while you do it. Edit the vocals over the exterior video. Adobe Premiere is your friend. Having a friend help with external shots is the key BTW. Thanks for making the video.

I can respect a retro conversion like this even though £60k+ is never ever going to be within my reach. It has been done with the Jaguar E-type so what the heck.... why not with a good old 1948(ish) onwards Porsche?? The relatively modern donor car is a plus for maintenance, reliability and road safety so....... if I had the cash, a retro look on a modern chassis etc would tip in favour of the original. Sorry to those purists out there - just my opinion is all so don't hate. Thanks for yet another interesting upload. Stay safe folks 👍.

Honestly, no I wouldn't. I'd take about a quarter of that 60 grand, and use it to build a Chesil Speedster, a replica of the original Porsche 356 based on a Beetle floorpan.

I did some driving for Jay in this video. This car really got some attention out on the road, way more than any Porsche I’ve driven. Absolutely awesome looking car and very well finished.

I guess this is the point. Generally kit cars are for those of us who don't really like to confirm. Yes, you could buy lots of nice cars for 60k, but they are unlikely to be that unique and will just blend into the automotive background. If you drive past in one of these, the car enthusiast (let's face it, no-one else really matters!) is going to be scratching their head trying to work out what it is. Is it a 356 (bit too big), is it a kit, is one off, is it a new Porsche model. That's the fun in cars like this, not what you could have had instead.

You are correct it is much larger. But the original is dangerously small almost cartoonishly tiny. This makes more sense than the 356 or the boxster.

I don’t normally like kit cars like this, but this was done right, and it shows. Usually there are certain angles and details that really let me down, but this one looks great from all angles. You get what you pay for- certainly true here.

I’d argue that the negative opinion of the one van driver is invalid, he’s likely just a jealous troll, I got some similar responses when I had a completely standard 996... from people I’m fairly sure have never even sat in one... ask a bunch of car enthusiasts, and in particular Porsche fans for a truer idea. I’m a Porsche fan and I love it, I love the 356, I think it’s a thing of beauty, but they’re big money, and not in anyway practical in the modern world... I also love the 987, it’s a brilliant thing to drive and can be easily daily driven... a cosmetically challenged 987 would be the prefect candidate for this.

sqd8r well there were two parts to my comment... I was firstly explaining why I thought the first van driver’s option was probably worth shit. Second part of the comment was my thoughts on the car, I can summarise that, I think it’s awesome if you have the money. Gorgeous looking thing!

i have a 356 and a boxster 986 and i love this!! best of both worlds!! Better than a 356 fiberglass copy!

I love this car you've presented us in this video. The shape of the car looks very good and close to a 356. A bit steep price wise but still lovely. I have been planning a 356 replica... but not the usual VW beetle floorpan type. Fibreglass body with a bespoke chassis to take some OEM suspension (MX-5 or MGTF?) and make it mid engined with a nice light punchy NA 4 pot (Rover K VVC or Honda B16?) transversely mounted. No brightwork, roof cover, windscreen or finished interior - just a very visible rollover hoop and possibly a wrap around wind deflector. A proper rough and ready "outlaw" on a budget. This is no 25k budget replica... more like 10k and most of that being the bodyshell.

I saw an old 911 on a TV show yesterday and thought, that's just not old enough to be cool. The 356, on the hand oozes cool, but I'm not a fan of vintage cars, because of all the compromises you have to make by losing modern features, not to mention the difficulty obtaining parts, etc. This offers the cool old styling with the modern convenience, so, for me, is the best of both worlds and worth every penny.

I love it. The 2.7 is a great little engine, makes you a better driver if it is a stick. Timing your shifts, keeping the regs high, juicing it into the corners without being afraid the snake may bite you. The Boxster is a corner car, kind of like Ducati vs Japanese bike, sound and cornering is what gives it a soul...

That's what I have wondered for years? The boxster is ugly and overpriced. They could take the original and make this out of it and sell them. Power is not an issue. I will add power if I want it.

I think it’s great that there are companies offering modifications like this, personally I can really appreciate it but wouldn’t spend that kind of money on it even if I had it, yet I would spend a similar amount of money on a RPM CSR 996 EVO. Cars like this will always divide an opinion but I think you have given a fair review and a great base car to start with, I have a 986s and for me the older looking interior of a 986 might have suited it more, especially with the center console delete? Looking forward to seeing your up and coming reviews as always, especially being a Porsche fan.

I can see why some would find the value in doing this. Buying an original for the average Joe is just out of the question price wise. You retain the boxter essentials of handling, but you get a classic look from the outset. In America, getting a classic car to handle like a modern car, is well, beyond expensive. Some average Joe's could not really ever afford to do so. So in the Porsche world, this really is a reasonable bit of kit.

OMG Jay - I watched this video yesterday (loved as always by the way) as I have a 987 - same color scheme as this one. Had the WORST nightmare last night that I had this done to my car and completely ruined it. Itried to get them to reverse it, but they said it was too late.....heartbroken, then woke up in sweats. Taking a perfectly good and pretty 987 and doing this conversion is I think in bad taste, sorry. Thanks again for the PORSCH - A video. Keep them coming!

if you find the right salvage boxter, low miles... runs strong... body damage... not a lot of suspension work needed... this could be a good solution.
