Ok, my two cents... Maybe your server had decided not to put your waffle order in with your original order so that the cooking staff would not prepare the waffles too early risking the chance that they would be served to you at room temperature rather than hot off the griddle. However, your server, it would seem, did forget to keep tabs on your table in order to input the waffle order at the appropriate time. Possibly his original intention was good, but his memory was not. Just "food" for thought.

This was exactly what I was thinking. When I served, I never tipped the cooks in any restaurant I worked at. He knows the service wasn't good. I would have probably tipped the same. I rarely tip lower than 20% even when bad, but I usually tip way more than 20%. I find the tip feature when you pay everywhere annoying.

I tip more sometimes for terrible service. There’s terrible service for a reason, not by accident. I prefer bad servers and single moms and stressed out waiters because I enjoy showing grace and love toward people who are already struggling as it is.

I always tip at least 20 percent. I don't think it's right that restaurants do not have to pay servers the actual minimum wage. I looked it up and the federal minimum wage for servers is $2.13 an hour! That's not much. There are people that just don't tip. Or what if the server is having a bad day? I worked a full time job and sometimes I worked when I was sick, grieving, or just not up to par. I still got paid my full wage.
@TheCuriousCorrespondent
@TheCuriousCorrespondent 3 месяца назад
That's Part of the problem now... Food Service Places Can't Afford the Higher Wage Without Raising their prices Drastically to Cover the Extra Pay Out... There's Nothing Wrong with Having Wait Staff be tipped as Part of their income...They Shouldn't be coming to work when they are sick anyway. Service is a Special Talent and Not Everyone Should Be doing it... I Was Great at it until the regulations and computers came in and told me how to do my job...That's When I left the industry.

I was a waitress for years a long time ago. I was very good to my patrons. The tips weren't shared. The lowest tip I received was a penny! And that is considered an insult! So as time went on, I learned how to keep them happy and I started getting larger tips,whether it was rush hour or empty. And some of the customers weren't so easy to get along with! The best tip? 50.00 if I remember right. Love watching John! May God bless you!
@patrickaquilone

God told me years ago that my tip is not about their service but about my witness. I can not tell you how many waiters and waitresses I have had the opportunity to share with because the average amount people tip in America is like 6%. So when the bill comes I pray and always start at 20%. There have been times that God has had me tip 100%. And again I have had a bunch of opportunity to share with people about Jesus because you stand out. I also am super super nice as if Jesus was at the table watching me.
@patrickaquilone

Also when I get something free I determine what the bill would be with that item and then tip on that amount.

It's nice to hear your testimony...but too often, church folks are the most entitled customers we waited on. They expected special treatment because they were "OF God"...or something........they made bigger messes than some families with small kids did...and they tipped very low...usually just threw a couple dollars on the table and walked out. No Matter how many there were, sometimes groups of 20 would saunter in on a Sunday After Church...they Expected Immediate Attention. Sundays Are Notoriously Slammed After Church...but the group of 20 thought they were special... We Never Liked Church People...

As a waitress I can say that in our computer system, there is not a way to punch in your waffles and have the computer hold the order for 15-20 minutes or whatever. However, a good server would have checked on you and as you were nearing the end of your first round of food, I would have asked if you were ready for me to punch in your waffle order. He obviously forgot about them and tried to cover it up.

Love your comedy. About tipping. Being a server is a terrible job. My daughter was a server in her younger years and sometimes even great service, she'd get NO TIP. People are terrible. Since he owned up to his mistake, I probably wouldn't penalize the tip because i also like to leave bible tracts. If the server is absolutely awful, i may penalize their tip, but never go leaving nothing. Remember too, they are often paid less than minimum wage, so tips are a big part of their income.

I've been in the food industry for 20+ yrs. For hold items, you can't put in or the cooks wouldn't make it and be cold. He did fail by not checking on you. But he did make up for it by putting on the house. Gotta give him Grace. But your 18% tip was fair.

He may have put your original order (including waffle) in the computer, but perhaps put a hold on the waffle. And then he went over to the computer to “fire” the waffle. I did that often when I worked as a waiter when people ordered multiple courses and didn’t want them at the same time. If that’s the case, then he didn’t forget to add the waffle to your order…he just forgot to “fire” it and tell the kitchen to cook it at the appropriate time.

John Had To Get Up and Ask for the food!!!... That's a Cardinal Sin in the Food Service World. . NO EXCUSES!!!!! Servers Need to be in Constant Contact with the Table... Servers Need to be Awake and Aware to How Long food is taking to be ready Hence My Abhorrence to the whole computer system for food service. A Glitch Can Happen & the order seems to go through, but Kitchen doesn't get it. I Had it happen repeatedly when I was the server. This Server Needed to be Watching the Table Closely... Then as all folks were done eating, clear the plates, fill coffee and ask if they were ready for the sweet stuff....or tell the table "I'm going to get your sweet stuff now...if You're Ready. It's all about communication between server & guest...the table should always know what I'm doing and why...I should always know what my table needs and anticipate the things they may need.

Maybe I should clarify a few things about "Tipping" and my credentials. I started as a hostess seating people, did banquets, bartended, managed fast food and restaurants, worked in hotels and resorts and seen every system used for tipping there is. So with that being said...if I don't make enough money combining my hourly wages and tips together I would find another job and management is a completely different subject. So...the laws and rules of a state and an establishment can be very different depending on where you are period. I have been paid less than minimum wage for working less than full time hours and I also have been paid hourly only no tip. If there are more than 8-10 tipped employees at that establishment, you are taxed an allocated 8% of your total food sales(especially credit/debit cards), it is literally taken out of your paycheck making cash the better option for the server when it comes to taxes. There are several other occupations that accept tips for example like: Hairdressers, Hotel Doormen, Room Service, Taxi Cab Drivers etc, etc...but they do not have to pay 8% of their tips in taxes...which is basically unfair to servers in the restaurant business because it is considered a crucial part of our wages, otherwise we can get a non-tipping easier job for minimum wage. John stop causing so much trouble with your tipping issue and either tell the server they are blowing it or tip 10% for minimum service...Lol !!! You are really just trying to see if anybody like me will set it straight right...jeeze come on with the jibber jabber and just slide them some cash they need it....

Personally, I wouldn’t withhold the tip from the server. People make mistakes, it’s not like he intentionally walked away and was like “not doing that.” He also may have known the kitchen staff wouldn’t have waited to make it, so he withheld the order. On top of that, he acknowledged that regardless of the chase, he messed up and he set it right. At that point, I would’ve certainly forgiven, and probably tipped a little extra. Sadly lots of people wouldn’t have owned up, so the fact that he did I believe is a really big deal.

Had they not made it right, skip the tip. Very little, if any, tips are actually shared. If they do actually share, peer pressure is a wonderful thing when tips are low because of the server's poor service. Military gets it right. One screws up, they all pay the price. Guaranteed that guy won't screw up the next time.

I believe the percentage is a suggestion. I go by the service. When they pool tips that’s unfair! I also think it’s unfair when they charge a minimum gratuity to your check! I can understand if your party is large, though. If a meal is only $20 but the server is excellent, I’ll tip a $10. If a meal is $100 but the service was terrible they’re getting a $10 also because that’s the minimum I’ll give. Who knows, they could have had a really bad day.

Do research as to how the tips are divvied up and how much each role gets paid. I'm not sure if it's still true but when I first moved to MD I found out that restaurant staff did not make minimum wage! They highly counted on their tips to make a living. Although that had not sunk in to a lot of them and the service was terrible, I still tipped 20%. If it was a restaurant which made at least minimum wage I might lower my tip but not with the way things are here. However, since they owned up to their mistake, I'd leave cash to make up for it

As a restaurant professional I know by what you were saying the servers don't split the tip with the kitchen staff. The servers do however tip the kitchen staff a percentage of their sales/tips. A good server always remembers to tip the cooks and the bussers a healthy tip so they will take care of them promptly and help them like they helped the waiter who forgot your order. Ahhhhh lol....🍽
@TheCuriousCorrespondent
@TheCuriousCorrespondent 3 месяца назад
I NEVER tipped cooks...they make 3times the salary I do, and expecting them to cater to me wouldn't be fair to the other servers. I did tip my personal busser a little bit, but too many times I didn't have a busser at all...so it was a moot point. I worked at Applebees and they require me to tip the bartender...but in my opinion, you're paid a wage to do a job...do it. Do it Well, or lose it. I shouldn't have to pay for my drinks, food, tables to be tended to quickly. That's just evil incarnate. I was always the lowest paid on that totem pole, and "I"M" Expected to Pay others for faster service when it's their job to serve the customer quickly???? Tipping my fellow workers was someone's really lousy idea for the waitstaff who is the low wage earner and is the one the customer gauges their tip on anyway.

I like your comedy, but dang, you're sort of demanding! Sorry! 😂Did you think of just ordering the waffles at the end when they ask you, "Will there be anything else?" That way you get your waffles when you wanted them anyway, and the server doesn't have to ask Suri to set an alarm for your table's specific timely requests. To drastically cut someone's tip for that is cringe. Yikes!
