A "naked" (or decased) Caddx Vista means you removed the metal heat sinks, which saves about 10 grams of weight. But is it safe? Will your Vista burn itself up and destroy itself? I'm going to show you how to make a "naked" Caddx Vista, and weigh in on whether it's safe to do this mod.

Great Video and thanks for the mention. If you wanna save a few more grams, you can throw on a dipole. The vista antenna is 4.7g and the dipole is 1.6g (or there about). I got mine to 68g Dry.

Looks like it flies great! I'm afraid you'll find my build to be underpowered if you fly it in the same way (the KV could be higher). The weight savings doesn't mean that much out in the open, but it sure does make a difference in tight spaces! I hope you have fun with it. Looking forward to your next video! :-)

Just a warning about those low profile connectors. They are rated for many fewer connection cycles than connectors we usually use in this hobby. One datasheet, I saw stated the connectors were rated for 30 connections. So the connectors are fine if you need to connect and disconnect them a few times while building/repairing but you don't want to add unneeded connection cycles.

I run Naked DJI Air Units on some of my builds. It's a little more involved but you can get the Air Unit to the weight of an unmodified vista and keep that sweet sweet onboard DVR!

Seems like the biggest difference in the bench at 25 mW before the hot signal would be from heat soak. It takes a bit of time for the heatsinks to heat up (as you would expect with 12g of extra material). Also, with the amount of thermal paste they have in there, you may actually have better cooling performance with the heatsinks removed once you have air going across the boards even with the loss in surface area to dump heat.

99% alcohol and a toothbrush is the best way to get all the thermal goop off. We did this a few months ago on our channel. By the way, make sure that the metal piece on the ribbon cable doesn't touch the bind switch or LED. Don't ask how we know. ;)

I have same canopy. Put the bolts from the bottom and screwed them to the canopy and it holds well. Change that antenna for a regular linear one and save some weight and eliminate that pendulum effect.

Would be interesting to test if mouning a micro fan or micro blower to blow between the boards will solve all the issues with heat, there are interesting things for that out there, like say a 16mm 1.5g blower with 5v power - "F16FB-05LLC", or a 17mm 1.5g fan - "UF3H3", 20mm blower 1.8g - "BSB0205HP", or 20mm fan with twice the airflow at 3g - "MS2006E12B2", or even 30mm fan with 5 times the airflow at 4.5g - "ASB0305HP".

Did this to several of my smallest quads I posted a video getting 7-1/2 min on a very small 2.5 inch tomoquad sidewinder quad, it’s my favorite everyday flyer super light at 95g and it flys great never had an issue.... as for cleaning the blue crap off use an alcohol bath literally submerge it in the alcohol and scrub it wit a stiff bristle toothbrush it comes off really fast this way the ....95g weight also includes a GPS antenna, racelites and an abs canopy take off the gps and it’s even lighter

Only reason you might not want to do this is if it prevents the heat escaping, no harm in trying it for sure.

@Joshua Bardwell 3s is fun, but run it on 4s for maximum fun! I limited motor output to 88% on 4s and it’s perfect in my opinion. Out of over 30 quads, it’s probably my favorite. At least I fly it more than anything. 5” usually doesn’t make the neighbors too happy lol

I love my TP3 with the naked vista. Still thinking about using a different antenna, swap the DJI cam for the nebula pro and the crossfire rx for the ELRS ceramic rx. But that will be a high price for like 5 grams.

Flying naked Vista look like old FPV days circa 2016. When after switching power to 600 mW (who remember those VTXes with DIP switches?) and connecting battery first thing was to get in air ASAP to avoid magic smoke from overheated VTX :D Although I will not risk with mine yet. They are hard to get now. Still hope that in one day Vista VTX will became small enough to fit in Mobula7 whoop.

Putting the thermal and warranty considerations aside, you're also losing the security for the connectors. The original heatsinks apply pressure to the back of the ribbon cable connectors to prevent them from coming loose. You're also losing the clips for the camera connector and the antenna connector.

About measuring power on vista: you can find "power splitters", and then measure power coming from one side of the splitter with antenna connected to the other side

Just to clarify the role of temperature protection setting. If it's enable then regardless of what you have the power set to, the Vista idles at < 1mW and about 5fps (lower processing demand) until after it's armed then it goes up to full set power and full fps. The low frame rate before arming is why it won't let you record (or talk to the Smart Controller). With temp protection turned off, then it'll just run at the preset power as soon as you power it up, until it actually overheats, then it drops to < 1mW and 5 fps.. (full sized AU will do this as well). I prefer to leave the temp protection turned on, even for the Vista, and I just just arm and wait a few seconds before taking off to give it time to increase power and change fps (image will freeze for a couple seconds, so if you launch immediately, it's very scary).

Just keep in mind at at fixed 1W, it'll still overheat in seconds, and you're pretty much at the same place. Even the full sized AU fixed at 1000mW will overheat in less than a minute (found that the hard way on one of my fixed wing aircraft, which overheated and dropped to

You likely already know this, but the conformal coating will make the boards run a bit hotter than they would without the coating. Of course there are plenty of times the conformal coating will prevent damage.

Tip you can use a soft small brush, eg. a toothbrush. Use isopropyl alcohol. Clean the rest of with a soft microfiber cloth

Hilarious opening, little creepy, but funny. It's so odd you posted this, I just got done stripping a vista that was in a crash and overheating quicker than normal, not sure if the crash broke anything but it was crammed in the quad so tight thought i'd strip it. haven't hooked it up yet. So did you leave the last of the blue goop on the board? I did what you showed, got the bulk of it off with q-tip and some strong adhesive tape, and left the rest. Any problems doing it that way?

Amazing video! HELP, HELP HELP!!! My caddx vista stopped showing the OSD, I cannot access the camera settings or select any channel and it's stuck to 25mw but it still works. Some posts online suggest to remove one of the nodes tht is causing the issue. Has anyone experienced this kind of issues, is this the only solution? Thanks in advance.

Couldn't you just connect amp meter (multimeter) in series with the vista power lead and see how much current it is pulling. You'll then know if it drop power as it heats up.

It would be a situation where I had to have it now, or if the quad is small enough the weight greatly reduced performance. If there's a work around like more powerful motors, or if the 12g could be taken in another way. I'll do whatever is necessary so that I don't void the warranty, but if I were doing a job, and that's the only option, then lookout because if I've got to void my warranty then I'm sending the weight nazi(oh wait, I doubt Mr SBug would come) lol

Well mine just died in mid air. It went well for about 25 batteries and it was aweseome as long as it lasted. I see no other reason why it should have died. I cleaned it and I see no damage. Can not connect to Pc no more either

I appreciate it would risk sanity but in theory could one splice in wires to extend the vista->camera link? Is there any funkiness going on that would prevent that working? The longest one is 20mm but I reckon I need another 10-15mm for a fixed wing build.

Those are impedance matched differential pairs, simply 'spicing wires' won't work - you need some microsoldering skills, a super fine tip and a microscope. Sanity is the least of it :) PS. it's cm not mm. You could try soldering two of the DJI cables together, at least the parts before and after the joints will have correct impedance.

@@jiatan_fpv this is what I feared. I figured there would be something more than just circuit continuity. Splicing 2 cables together isn't a bad shout though. The question then is: would the order need to be reversed? I might be able to check that with the multimeter I guess.

@@frasersteen yeah, you'll definitely need to check with a multimeter, then maybe mark the pairs with a color marker then additionally mark 'positive' halves somehow. I'm not even sure if both ends are the same connector shape. If they are, it's very likely they're 1:1, not reversed. People have done DIY PCIe extensions, so the concept is definitely viable. If the connector ends are solderable, it might be better for signal integrity to source a longer cable with same pair impedance and solder that to both connectors (but that's twice as much work). Thin HMDI cables could be one potential source of LVDS pairs..

Cleaning with Waschbenzin (don't know the product in english) and a toothbrush works perfect. I also created a ufl caddx protector on thingiverse. Actually this conversion looks aweful...

The toothbrush is definitely key. The alcohol doesn't seem to do much to get the grease off, but it seems to keep the toothbrush clean so you just end up with flakes of stuff everywhere. Forget the nano. Just chop down the OG DJI cam. It can be made about 14mm square if you dremel it off right at the lens barrel. The I hot glue it into the canopy. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q3rZwif8rd4.html Not sure what we'll do for nano cams if DJI isn't producing this one any more,... :( Remove the mesh attached to the ribbon cables. It's conductive and will fry stuff on the other board if you mount them too close. I drill the holes. Easy peasy,.. I did finally kill a naked vista recently. Was after a fall through a tree. Not sure if it was the overheat or if something shorted during the impacts. Had to DHL one straight from Caddx since they appear to be out of stock everywhere else.

Hey Joshua, I just built up my quad with a caddx vista and cricket 200 FC, wiring looks good and the uarts are configured properly but I still am having a problem I can't seem to figure out. Armed the dji goggles still say low power mode and I have no battery voltage or custom osd. I have heard of vista diodes going bad but it's brand new, any ideas of what I could try before I sending it in for repair? Thank you!

Check your wiring TX on the Vista to RX on the FC and vice versa. Ports tab make sure MSP is enabled for that UART. You should see the vBat in the lower right at that point. Make sure Custom OSD is enabled in the goggle Display menu to get the OSD.

Any videos on how to do that? I've only seen pictures. Also how to mount it? I've seen a mount using the front four screws, but I'm not sure if that saves a lot of weight.

@@gus8378 I have done it for over half a year now and it works fine. I did it as I wanted to fit it in a whoop. I was lazy and I just stripped it out and glued the two boards together with a tiny dab that will pull off if I gently twist it and want to do a better job later. The better job is to make a 3d printed part that holds the two boards in place using the original screws. Search Naked DJI camera there are a couple of recent videos with different 3d printed variations. You can even use cutters for max weight savings and 14x14 adaption.

Stuck on 95% means the flash completed then it didn't finish verification. Usually after power cycle it's fine. If it won't connect to pc you habr to contact DJI support.

Are the heat shields grounded to make a Faraday cage to block EMI? Seems to be a “no” as the Vista swamps out nearby GPS units in micro long range quads.

So really removing the heat sink doesn't damage at all the Caddx Vista unit? Has anyone tried this and confirm that you can keep flying for months without getting the Caddx vista damaged?

I can't imagine that paste is transferring any heat to the heat sync. Does the heat sync get hot?

Yes it gets very very hot. Hit enough to burn you in extreme cases.
